In the few short years since the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria formed, it has done the seemingly impossible, seizing vast areas of the Middle East to form a mini-state it calls a reincarnation of the ancient Caliphate. It is at war with all its neighbors and virtually the entire world, yet someone remains, and is launching increasingly deadly terror attacks abroad.
To understand how this terrible group came about and how it has grown so powerful, you need to understand the story behind its rise. And that is a story that goes back decades, to long before ISIS existed.

What It's Really Like to Fight for the Islamic State
VICE News has obtained footage taken from the headcam of an Islamic State (IS) fighter who died in March while battling Kurdish peshmerga troops in northern Iraq. The clash took place about 30 miles north of Mosul.
Unlike IS propaganda, which often presents sweeping battlefield victories, the video shows chaos, panic, and the fighters retreating.
VICE News shows the grim reality of an IS foot soldier.

Where is the Islamic State operating now?
10 years ago the Islamic State group declared their ‘caliphate’ in Iraq and Syria (in 2014), but after its collapse, the jihadist group pivoted to sub-Saharan Africa. BBC Monitoring’s Jihadist Media specialist Jacob Boswall explains where they are, what they're doing and how much of a global threat they pose.

10,000 ISIS Fighters: The Hidden Army in the Desert | Full Documentary

Why IS remains a threat | DW Documentary
Is the world facing a resurgence of the so-called Islamic State (IS)? In northern Syria, many former IS fighters are imprisoned in hard-to-secure prisons. Among their children, the next generation of jihadists is growing up.
A severe earthquake in February 2023 brought northern Syria back into the international spotlight. It’s a region that has long gone unnoticed, despite the fact that the so-called Islamic State (IS), a terrorist organization, had its stronghold here. Though it was defeated militarily, IS could regain strength from here. This would have international repercussions.
Filmmaker Kawa Akrawi visited northeastern Syria’s autonomous, democratically governed area in 2022. In this region inhabited predominantly by Kurds, the filmmaker experienced the difficulties faced by the l...

Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

VICE News has obtained footage taken from the headcam of an Islamic State (IS) fighter who died in March while battling Kurdish peshmerga troops in northern Iraq. The clash took place about 30 miles north of Mosul.

Afghanistan, Pakistan, Southeast Asia , Egypt, the Sahel region, Somalia and Mozambique, organisations that have sworn allegiance to the Islamic State are only increasing their attacks and summary executions.
Then there’s the question of what to do with the women and children. The Roj and Al Hol camps, where women and children are imprisoned, have become powder kegs. In August, Syrian forces discovered machine guns, rocket launchers and explosives in these very camps. We met some of the foreign women imprisoned there, desperate to return home. For the children, unfortunately these camps are not the worst case scenario for them. In Syrian Kurdistan, some live in prison with their mothers, who have been sentenced for terrorism – one four year old boy recounted how his mother told him he would grow up to be a jihadist and kill everyone.

In this region inhabited predominantly by Kurds, the filmmaker experienced the difficulties faced by the local population up close.
Here in "Rojava," as the region is known by the Kurds, the Kurdish militia YPG, backed by U.S. forces, fought against IS until 2019; thousands of fighters have been killed or wounded. Following victory over the IS caliphate, the region has been home to the world’s largest prison for IS fighters. The area also has the world’s largest camps for the jihadists’ women and children. Many of the wives are from western countries, which have refused to take them back.
In these immense camps and prisons, it is feared, the next generation of jihadists is now growing up. "We have defeated IS territorially, but its ideology and organization have not disappeared. They are still active," says Newroz Ehmed, of the military alliance's SDF General Command. Their security forces can guard the camps and prisons from the outside, but they cannot control them inside. It is an explosive situation.
The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that Turkish President Erdogan has been fighting the Kurds in northeastern Syria for years. He calls their militia, the YPG, a terrorist organization and repeatedly flies drone attacks on the "Rojava" region; tens of thousands of Kurds have lost their homes and now live in refugee camps.
Under these conditions, how can Kurdish leaders in northeastern Syria protect themselves, neighboring countries and the West from a return of IS? What are the plans for dealing with Islamist fighters and their children, who are being raised in camps to become fanatical and ruthless fighters?
