Jamie "Dubs" Wilkinson is an internet culture researcher and software engineer. Wilkinson started Know Your Meme, a database of viral internet memes whilst working at Rocketboom in New York City.
In addition to his online video work, Wilkinson taught an “Internet Famous” class at Parsons graduate Design & Technology Program that examined internet attention, specifically how it could be manipulated and aggregated via different strategies. Students’ grades were determined solely based on their ability to garner online attention in the form of web page views, video views, Twitter followers, and “favorites.”
In August, 2010 Jamie won an Emmy for "Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media - Fiction" for his work in collaborating with Casey Pugh, Annelise Pruitt and Chad Pugh on Star Wars Uncut, a web-based platform and community where users can recreate their favorite scenes from Star Wars.
Jamie is also a virtual research fellow of the Free Art and Technology Lab and co-founded video sharing and payment platform VHX. Wilkinson was Eyebeam's systems administrator in 2006.

PuppetConf '12: "Better Living Through Statistics: Monitoring Doesn't Have To Suck" by Jamie Wilkinson, Systems Engineer at Google Australia. Learn more about Puppet: http://bit.ly/OUeBLk Abstract: ""#monitoringsucks."" I can appreciate the sentiment. I used to use Nagios too! However, I can't agree that monitoring sucks. Monitoring is awesome! We observe our systems to understand their behaviour. We do this in various ways like reading logs or taking measurements and, more recently, storing them in a timeseries database such as collectd or graphite. However, the standard practice for alerting is still to check the measurement at the time that it is taken and it is this ""check script"" model of monitoring that is long due for an overhaul. In this talk, I'll start over from first principl...

Jamie Wilkinson https://linux.conf.au/schedule/30131/view_talk Monitoring is the foundational bedrock of site reliability, and yet is the bane of most sysadmin's lives. Why? Monitoring sucks when the cost of maintenance scales proportionally with the size of the system being monitored. Recently tools like Riemann and Prometheus have emerged that can address this problem, by scaling out monitoring configurations sublinearly with the size of the system. In this talk, Jamie will talk about the theory of alert design and timeseries-based alerting methods, and complement that with practical examples in Prometheus that you can deploy in your environment today to reduce the amount of alert spam and help operators keep a healthy level of production hygiene.
