1st track from "
Paul Davis" (
1980). I'm still as pleasantly surprised today as I was in 1980 that this genteel song—with its tip of the hat to
Christianity—rose to #23 on the pop charts (and as far as #4 on the US
Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks).
Great artist. Great music. Great message!

Paul Davis was a quiet man from
Mississippi, the son of a preacher, slow, calm, and deliberate, who expressed his faith through his everyday actions as well as occasionally through his music. I get the distinct impression from reading what his friends have posted about him that he would have greatly preferred a game of pool or a day of fishing to provoking or arguing with anyone who disagreed with his religious beliefs (leave that to those troublesome YouTubers, ahem
...). He deliberately disassociated himself from the whole pop music scene and rarely granted interviews, saying "all the answers to your questions can be found in my music." Although not professionally active in music for some years, before his death at age 60 he had been taking an increased interest in recording at home, posting some new compositions to the Macjams website. He had also been in contact with members of the
Yahoo group set up to celebrate his music.
Paul, you are greatly missed!
Rest in peace, my brother.
