Dinorah is cast by Meyerbeer essentially as a light soprano of the canary school, not a moment passes without an ornament or high note (indeed, the part lies cruelly high). Narratively, this casting decision suits the character well: Dinorah remains throughout the opera an unhappy child, contrasting both with the happier world of the villagers and shepherds, who remain a constant beacon of pastoral simplicity next to the more grim themes that the opera explores, and the more realistic conflict between Hoel and Corentin, thus, her higher vocal writing serves in underlining her innocence and obvious difference from both sides of the cast of characters. Her madness, in fact, is treated superbly. Of course, she is cured by the imminent happy ending, but before the latter happens we are given a rather sad picture: the text makes subtle hints that Dinorah balances somewhere between true madness and awareness of her state (unlike most heroines who are, basically, forced into madness at a key point of the opera, not from the beginning), though she is unable to solve her dilemmas, thus, she remains mad throughout the opera, that is until she is confronted by Hoel whose presence returns the heroine to sanity.
It's a bit of a pity that Dinorah's spectacular waltz song in the Second Act went on to become the most famous except from the opera, as the work houses a great deal of attractive, if rather sentimental, music, especially for the heroine herself. The present upload is devoted to one of these numbers, Dinorah's cavatina/lullaby to her lost pet goat, Bellah. Ironically, Dinorah spends much of the opera looking for her goat, rather than Hoel, clinging to the last real thing that remains to her, after her parents' possible death and her lover's presumed infidelity. Her little cavatina, accompanied by short sighs of the strings and the ever-present, even oppressive, bass line, as she imagines Bellah safely sleeping in her lap, is ideally childlike and dreamy. Stunningly, the aria is unconventional featuring several contrasting sections, connected by the central lullaby motive. Especially notable is the arioso at 1:43 where Dinorah leaves her fantasy and returns to reality, suddenly seized by the possibility of her pet getting hurt, though this soon gives way to an even more immediate repeat of the lullaby. The aria is resolved by a slow mellowing down of the scene, as Dinorah herself falls asleep. A most gentle cavatina for a truly heartbreaking character.

Diana (pastoral romance)
The Seven Books of the Diana (Spanish: Los siete libros de la Diana) is a pastoral romance written in Spanish by the Portuguese author Jorge de Montemayor. The Diana was first published in 1559, though later editions expanded upon the original text. A sixteenth-century bestseller, the Diana helped launch a vogue for stories about shepherds, shepherdesses, and their experiences in love. One of its most famous readers was William Shakespeare, who seems to have borrowed the Proteus-Julia-Sylvia plot of The Two Gentlemen of Verona from Felismena's tale in the Diana.
Plot
The Diana begins with a summary of previous events, telling us that the shepherd Sireno is in love with the shepherdess Diana. She once returned his love, but when Sireno was called away from their village, she was married to another shepherd named Delio. The story begins with Sireno's return after a year's absence, having already learned of Diana's marriage.

Pastoral
A pastoral lifestyle (see pastoralism) is that of shepherds herding livestock around open areas of land according to seasons and the changing availability of water and pasture. It lends its name to a genre of literature, art and music that depicts such life in an idealized manner, typically for urban audiences. A pastoral is a work of this genre, also known as bucolic, from the Greek βουκολικόν, from βουκόλος, meaning a cowherd.

Pastoral literature in general
Pastoral is a mode of literature in which the author employs various techniques to place the complex life into a simple one. Paul Alpers distinguishes pastoral as a mode rather than a genre, and he bases this distinction on the recurring attitude of power; that is to say that pastoral literature holds a humble perspective toward nature. Thus, pastoral as a mode occurs in many types of literature (poetry, drama, etc.) as well as genres (most notably the pastoral elegy).
Terry Gifford, a prominent literary theorist, defines pastoral in three ways in his critical book Pastoral. The first way emphasizes the historical literary perspective of the pastoral in which authors recognize and discuss life in the country and in particular the life of a shepherd. This is summed up by Leo Marx with the phrase "No shepherd, no pastoral." The second type of the pastoral is literature that "describes the country with an implicit or explicit contrast to the urban." The third type of pastoral depicts the country life with derogative classifications.

Strange Fruit
"Strange Fruit" is a song performed most famously by Billie Holiday, who first sang and recorded it in 1939. Written by teacher Abel Meeropol as a poem and published in 1937, it protested American racism, particularly the lynching of African Americans. Such lynchings had reached a peak in the South at the turn of the century, but continued there and in other regions of the United States. Meeropol set it to music and, with his wife and the singer Laura Duncan, performed it as a protest song in New York venues in the late 1930s, including Madison Square Garden.
The song continues to be covered by numerous artists, and has inspired novels, other poems, and other creative works. In 1978, Holiday's version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. It was also included in the list of Songs of the Century, by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Poem and song
"Strange Fruit" was originated as a poem written by American writer, teacher and songwriter Abel Meeropol under his pseudonym Lewis Allan, as a protest against lynchings. In the poem, Meeropol expressed his horror at lynchings, inspired by Lawrence Beitler's photograph of the 1930 lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion, Indiana. He published the poem under the title "Bitter Fruit" in 1937 in The New York Teacher, a union magazine. Though Meeropol had asked others (notably Earl Robinson) to set his poems to music, he set "Strange Fruit" to music himself. His protest song gained a certain success in and around New York. Meeropol, his wife, and black vocalist Laura Duncan performed it at Madison Square Garden.

Dinorah is cast by Meyerbeer essentially as a light soprano of the canary school, not a moment passes without an ornament or high note (indeed, the part lies cruelly high). Narratively, this casting decision suits the character well: Dinorah remains throughout the opera an unhappy child, contrasting both with the happier world of the villagers and shepherds, who remain a constant beacon of pastoral simplicity next to the more grim themes that the opera explores, and the more realistic conflict between Hoel and Corentin, thus, her higher vocal writing serves in underlining her innocence and obvious difference from both sides of the cast of characters. Her madness, in fact, is treated superbly. Of course, she is cured by the imminent happy ending, but before the latter happens we are given a rather sad picture: the text makes subtle hints that Dinorah balances somewhere between true madness and awareness of her state (unlike most heroines who are, basically, forced into madness at a key point of the opera, not from the beginning), though she is unable to solve her dilemmas, thus, she remains mad throughout the opera, that is until she is confronted by Hoel whose presence returns the heroine to sanity.
It's a bit of a pity that Dinorah's spectacular waltz song in the Second Act went on to become the most famous except from the opera, as the work houses a great deal of attractive, if rather sentimental, music, especially for the heroine herself. The present upload is devoted to one of these numbers, Dinorah's cavatina/lullaby to her lost pet goat, Bellah. Ironically, Dinorah spends much of the opera looking for her goat, rather than Hoel, clinging to the last real thing that remains to her, after her parents' possible death and her lover's presumed infidelity. Her little cavatina, accompanied by short sighs of the strings and the ever-present, even oppressive, bass line, as she imagines Bellah safely sleeping in her lap, is ideally childlike and dreamy. Stunningly, the aria is unconventional featuring several contrasting sections, connected by the central lullaby motive. Especially notable is the arioso at 1:43 where Dinorah leaves her fantasy and returns to reality, suddenly seized by the possibility of her pet getting hurt, though this soon gives way to an even more immediate repeat of the lullaby. The aria is resolved by a slow mellowing down of the scene, as Dinorah herself falls asleep. A most gentle cavatina for a truly heartbreaking character.

Los Profetas Menores o los Doce Profetas (en arameo: תרי עשר, Trei Asar, "Los Doce"), ocasionalmente llamado Libro de los Doce, es el último libro de la Nevi'im, la segunda división principal del Tanaj o Biblia judía. La colección se divide para formar doce libros individuales en el Antiguo Testamento cristiano, uno para cada uno de los profetas. Los términos "profetas menores" y "doce profetas" también puede referirse a los doce autores tradicionales de estas obras.
El término "menor" se refiere a la longitud de cada libro (que van desde un solo capítulo a catorce), e incluso el más largo es corto en comparación con los de los cuatro profetas mayores, (Isaias, Ezequiel, Jeremias y Daniel). No se sabe cuando fueron recopiladas estas obras cortas y trasladadas a un solo rollo, pero la primera evidencia extra-bíblica que tenemos de estos textos como colección fue aproximadamente hacia 190 A.C. en los escritos de Jesus Ben Sirac. La evidencia de los Rollos del Mar Muerto sugiere que el orden moderno fue establecido en 150 A.C.: se cree que inicialmente fueron recogidos los seis primeros, y más tarde se agregaron los otros seis. Sr. Marguerite has been the Vice President for Mission and Ministry at Neumann University since 1997. Prior to arriving at NU, Sr. Marguerite has had an extensive career in education: as Principal of McCorristin Catholic High School in Trenton, New Jersey; the Coordinator of Education for the Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia; as Principal of Holy Trinity School in Columbia, Pennsylvania, and as an elementary and junior high school teacher.
Sr. Marguerite is a native of County Sligo, Ireland, but completed her studies in the United States; she has a P.D. in Administration/Supervision from Fordham University, New York, and a Certificate in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College in Massachusetts. Sr. Marguerite is a member of both the Association of Catholic College and Universities (ACCU) and the Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities (AFCU).
Sr. Marguerite is a three-time winner of the Irish Voice's "Top 100 Irish/American Educators" (2009, 2010, 2011), has been named a Friendly Sons of St. Patrick "Woman of the Year" (2003), and the Grand Marshal of the Saint Patrick's Day Parade (1996), among numerous other accolades and nominations.

Faith Hope + Lunch is a program offered by the Neumann University Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development. In this series, students will have the chance to learn about and reflect on a life well lived.
On February 16, 2012, the ISSCD had the pleasure of welcoming Sr. Marguerite O'Beirne, OSF, for the second installment of FH+L, as we learned more about her life, work and faith in a talk titled "Faith, Family, Country."

High-energy and committed!!! England born Chris, as well as Jim and Derrek like to enjoy ourselves, and like to get everybody around us to have a fun time, but we also are very dedicated musicians. Although it may seem like Claymore is just about jumping around and not appearing serious, all of us are committed to being the best at what each of us do. We have our regular drummer Don (Otto) Wilson out with us on most occasions also. We are truly passionate about the music. We are also very grateful for our family and friends, who come out or support us in many different ways.

Fairies by Walter Gregor (1881)
This section comes from the book 'Notes on the Folk-Lore of the North-East of Scotland' and the introduction says:
This is an ethnographic study of the inhabitants of the North-Eastern area of Scotland in the mid-19th century, at a time when an agrarian, barter economy still prevailed. Life was hard among these remote coastal communities, and they lived in fear of maleficent witches and the 'Evil Eye'. Many of the rituals, taboos and folkways in this book are to ward off witchcraft directed against economic mainstays such as livestock and fishing.
The book has many fascinating bits of lore, as well as extensive oral poetry, all in Scots dialect. (There is, thankfully, an extensive glossary at the end, in case ye're na sure what all the clatterin's aboot.). There are also detailed descriptions of holidays, weddings, and other celebrations, which reveal that life was not completely grim. [Sacred Texts]

King of the Fairies by Anne Roos
Anne has graciously allowed us to play King of the Fairies which is a superb folk piece from her album, A Light in the Forest. More details about Anne and her albums can be found on her Contributor Page.
Anne’s music repertoire spans traditional Celtic (Irish, Scottish, Welsh), English, folk, religious and secular, Early, Renaissance and classical music, to Broadway, contemporary, pop and Jazz, and is virtually unlimited. She can easily provide the traditional “Canon in D” and “Here Comes the Bride” for a wedding processional, and play classic Frank Sinatra or Metallica at a reception. Her ability to faithfully play such a broad range of musical styles has helped to establish her popularity.

Alexander Pope (21 May 1688 – 30 May 1744) was an eighteenth-century English poet, best known for his satirical verse and for his translation of Homer. He is the third most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, after Shakespeare and Tennyson. Pope is famous for his use of the heroic couplet.
