George Thomas "Tom" Seaver (born November 17, 1944), nicknamed "Tom Terrific" and "The Franchise", is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. He pitched from 1967-1986 for four different teams in his career, but is noted primarily for his time with the New York Mets. During a 20-year career, Seaver compiled 311 wins, 3,640 strikeouts, 61 shutouts and a 2.86 earned run average. In 1992, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the second highest percentage ever recorded (98.84%), and is one of two players (with Mike Piazza) at Cooperstown wearing a New York Mets hat on his plaque. As of 2010, Tom Seaver and Gil Hodges (played for the Mets in 1962-63) are the only Met players to have their jersey numbers retired by the team (Gil Hodges' number was retired as a manager even though he also played for the Mets).
He won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1967, and three NL Cy Young Awards as the league's best pitcher. Seaver is the Mets' all-time leader in wins, and is considered by many baseball experts as one of the best starting pitchers in the history of baseball.
St. Louis Cardinals 0 at Cincinnati Reds 4, F -- On any given night in his career, Tom Seaver could be virtually unhittable. Three times he had taken a no-hitter into the ninth inning, and five times he finished a game with only one hit allowed. Yet for all his accomplishments, the Cooperstown-bound hurler was unable to bag his own personal white whale in the form of a complete game no-no. All of that changed on one night in the middle of June.

Game 4 was a rematch of Game 1, Cuellar against Mets ace Tom Seaver. The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Donn Clendenon's home run, and that's where it stayed until the ninth, when the Orioles scratched out a single run. It would have been more, but right fielder Ron Swoboda made a spectacular diving catch on Brooks Robinson's drive to right-center. And in the bottom of the 10th, a misplayed ball in left field and pitcher Pete Richert's error on an attempted sacrifice bunt allowed pinch-runner Rod Gaspar to score the game-winning run.

When you talk about drop and driver pitchers, older guys (like me) think of Tom Seaver. My son thinks of Yu Darvish. In both cases they lower their center of gravity early in the motion, bend and drive with the back leg and almost scrape their knee on the ground. This approach leads to a long stride and a release point closer to the batter. The alternative (arguably more modern) approach is called 'tall and fall'. With that, you gather your self over the rubber for a longer period and let gravity assist in a more gradual release of your potential energy towards the plate. Strides tend to be shorter (relative to height) and the final release is more upright (think Randy Johnson). So which is approach is better? In this 30 minute webinar, Chaz Henry asks that question of Phil Rosengre...
