Monad (functional programming)

In functional programming, a monad is a structure that represents computations defined as sequences of steps: a type with a monad structure defines what it means to chain operations, or nest functions of that type together. This allows the programmer to build pipelines that process data in steps, in which each action is decorated with additional processing rules provided by the monad. As such, monads have been described as "programmable semicolons"; a semicolon is the operator used to chain together individual statements in many imperative programming languages, thus the expression implies that extra code will be executed between the statements in the pipeline. Monads have also been explained with a physical metaphor as assembly lines, where a conveyor belt transports data between functional units that transform it one step at a time. They can also be seen as a functional design pattern to build generic types.

Purely functional programs can use monads to structure procedures that include sequenced operations like those found in structured programming. Many common programming concepts can be described in terms of a monad structure, including side effects such as input/output, variable assignment, exception handling, parsing, nondeterminism, concurrency, and continuations. This allows these concepts to be defined in a purely functional manner, without major extensions to the language's semantics. Languages like Haskell provide monads in the standard core, allowing programmers to reuse large parts of their formal definition and apply in many different libraries the same interfaces for combining functions.

Calvin and Hobbes is a daily comic strip by American cartoonist Bill Watterson that was syndicated from November 18, 1985 to December 31, 1995. Commonly cited as "the last great newspaper comic,"Calvin and Hobbes has evinced broad and enduring popularity, influence, and academic interest.

Calvin and Hobbes follows the humorous antics of Calvin, a precocious, mischievous, and adventurous six-year-old boy, and Hobbes, his sardonic stuffed tiger. The pair is named after John Calvin, a 16th-century French Reformation theologian, and Thomas Hobbes, a 17th-century English political philosopher. Set in the contemporary, suburban United States, the strip depicts Calvin's frequent flights of fancy and his friendship with Hobbes. It also examines Calvin's relationships with family and classmates. Hobbes' dual nature is a defining motif for the strip: to Calvin, Hobbes is a live anthropomorphic tiger; all the other characters see Hobbes as an inanimate stuffed toy. Though the series does not mention specific political figures or current events, it does explore broad issues like environmentalism, public education, philosophical quandaries, and the flaws of opinion polls.

Susie (TV program)

Susie was an Australian morning talk and variety show, produced by WIN Television and hosted by Susie Elelman in Wollongong, New South Wales. The hour-long show premiered 25 June 2007, is broadcast on WIN Television each weekday morning at 9.30 am. It is also broadcast on two Nine Network affiliate stations, NWS-9 Adelaide and STW-9 Perth which are both owned by the WIN Corporation. In these two cities, the show remains at 12 noon. The local show was axed at 20 June 2008, with affiliate Nine clearing some space for 3 stages with the Nine News major expansion.

On 16 August 2007 as part of several changes to WIN's daytime television schedule, Susie is also at 9:30 am timeslot.

Segments

Susie features several regular guests, whilst including experts in the fields of health, family, career, cooking, relationships, beauty and fashion. Helen Hope specialises in astrology, Dr. Rob Zammit focuses on pet advice, Georgina Walker features in segments using psychic powers, Adam Richards is the program's gardener and features in gardening segments, whilst Janie Larmour is the fitness expert.

Strings! is the second album by guitarist Pat Martino recorded in 1967 and released on the Prestige label.

Reception

Allmusic awarded the album 4 stars stating "Guitarist Pat Martino's second recording as a leader finds him essentially playing advanced bop. His quintet really roars on an uptempo version of "Minority" and is diverse enough to come up with meaningful statements on four of Martino's originals".
