Michael Schultz directed this kinetic, hyperventilating comedy (scripted by Joel Schumacher) concerning the crazed events that go on within a single 10-hour period at a Los Angeles car wash. The cast of colorful car-wash employees includes Lonnie (Ivan Dixon), an ex-con; Duane (Bill Duke), a militant black activist; and Lindy (Antonio Fargas), an obnoxious homosexual. Sully Boyar plays Mr. B, the frazzled car-wash owner who has to deal with his screwball employees along with his over-educated slip of a son, Irwin (Richard Brestoff), who quotes Mao and wants to radicalize the workers. Also along for the wash and wax are Miss Beverly Hills (Lauren Jones), with a wild assortment of wigs; Marsha (Melanie Mayron), the distracted car wash secretary; a mad bomber (Prof. Irwin Corey), who is terrorizing the neighborhood; and Daddy Rich (Richard Pryor), the founder of the Church of Divine Economic Spirituality, who sports a gold limousine. Another big disco hit that radio fully embraced! Motown stalwart Norman Whitfield was not really interested in putting his efforts into the music for "Car Wash" as a play with music. He finally relented after he had a burst of creativity that would not wait, and wrote out the lyrics to "Car Wash" on a Kentucky Fried Chicken wrapper while he was at a basketball game with Gwen Dickey, who was renamed Rose Norwalt to fit with the Rose Royce moniker he had chosen for the band. Gwen has been a member of a local girl group in Miami called the Jewels (not the Washington DC based group that had a hit in 1964 with the single "Opportunity"). He wanted to break Rose Royce, his latest proteges who he had been using as background vocalists and musicians for his productions for the Temptations and the Undisputed Truth. The label was not 100% behind that, but Norman persevered and Rose Royce went in the studio. One line, "A movie star or maybe even a Indian Chief" gave Rose no end of ennui and had to record it nearly 60 times so that the word "chief" did not sound like "sheep". The result was a smash hit, #1 on the Hot 100 and #1 R&B; and became an iconic disco song. It was my friend Damien's favorite disco song ever......he had exquisite taste!

Car Wash (film)
Car Wash is a 1976 American comedy film released by Universal Pictures. The Art Linson Production was directed by Michael Schultz from a screenplay by Joel Schumacher. Starring Franklyn Ajaye, Bill Duke, George Carlin, Irwin Corey, Ivan Dixon, Antonio Fargas, Jack Kehoe, Clarence Muse, Lorraine Gary, The Pointer Sisters and Richard Pryor, Car Wash is an episodic comedy about a day in the lives of the employees and the owner, Mr. B (Sully Boyar), of a Los Angeles, California car wash (filmed at a Westlake car wash at the corner of Rampart Blvd. and 6th Street).
Overview
Originally conceived as a musical, Car Wash deals with the exploits of a close-knit, multiracial group of employees at a Los Angeles car wash. In an episodic fashion, the film covers a full day, during which all manner of strange visitors make cameo appearances, including Lorraine Gary as a hysterical wealthy woman from Beverly Hills dealing with a carsick son. Richard Pryor also appears in a memorable cameo as a money-hungry evangelist named 'Daddy Rich' whose pseudo-gospel of prosperity theology is beloved by most (including his female entourage, played by The Pointer Sisters) but loathed by Abdullah, formerly Duane (Bill Duke), a young, bad-tempered, Black Muslim revolutionary. Later in the film, there is also a man ("Professor" Irwin Corey) whose strange behavior and dress fit the profile of the notorious "pop bottle bomber" being sought that day by the police. This causes employees, customers and the owner of the car wash, Mr. B (Sully Boyer) to fear for their lives, but the strange man's pop bottle "bomb" is simply a urine sample he is taking to the hospital.

He finally relented after he had a burst of creativity that would not wait, and wrote out the lyrics to "Car Wash" on a Kentucky Fried Chicken wrapper while he was at a basketball game with Gwen Dickey, who was renamed Rose Norwalt to fit with the Rose Royce moniker he had chosen for the band. Gwen has been a member of a local girl group in Miami called the Jewels (not the Washington DC based group that had a hit in 1964 with the single "Opportunity"). He wanted to break Rose Royce, his latest proteges who he had been using as background vocalists and musicians for his productions for the Temptations and the Undisputed Truth. The label was not 100% behind that, but Norman persevered and Rose Royce went in the studio. One line, "A movie star or maybe even a Indian Chief" gave Rose no end of ennui and had to record it nearly 60 times so that the word "chief" did not sound like "sheep". The result was a smash hit, #1 on the Hot 100 and #1 R&B; and became an iconic disco song. It was my friend Damien's favorite disco song ever......he had exquisite taste! -

Michael Schultz directed this kinetic, hyperventilating comedy (scripted by Joel Schumacher) concerning the crazed events that go on within a single 10-hour period at a Los Angeles car wash. The cast of colorful car-wash employees includes Lonnie (Ivan Dixon), an ex-con; Duane (Bill Duke), a militant black activist; and Lindy (Antonio Fargas), an obnoxious homosexual. Sully Boyar plays Mr. B, the frazzled car-wash owner who has to deal with his screwball employees along with his over-educated slip of a son, Irwin (Richard Brestoff), who quotes Mao and wants to radicalize the workers. Also along for the wash and wax are Miss Beverly Hills (Lauren Jones), with a wild assortment of wigs; Marsha (Melanie Mayron), the distracted car wash secretary; a mad bomber (Prof. Irwin Corey), who is terrorizing the neighborhood; and Daddy Rich (Richard Pryor), the founder of the Church of Divine Economic Spirituality, who sports a gold limousine. Danny de Vito, Brooke Adams and others were originally in the cast but their scenes were ultimately deleted.

Another big disco hit that radio fully embraced! Motown stalwart Norman Whitfield was not really interested in putting his efforts into the music for "Car Wash" as a play with music. He finally relented after he had a burst of creativity that would not wait, and wrote out the lyrics to "Car Wash" on a Kentucky Fried Chicken wrapper while he was at a basketball game with Gwen Dickey, who was renamed Rose Norwalt to fit with the Rose Royce moniker he had chosen for the band. Gwen has been a member of a local girl group in Miami called the Jewels (not the Washington DC based group that had a hit in 1964 with the single "Opportunity"). He wanted to break Rose Royce, his latest proteges who he had been using as background vocalists and musicians for his productions for the Temptations and the Undisputed Truth. The label was not 100% behind that, but Norman persevered and Rose Royce went in the studio. One line, "A movie star or maybe even a Indian Chief" gave Rose no end of ennui and had to record it nearly 60 times so that the word "chief" did not sound like "sheep". The result was a smash hit, #1 on the Hot 100 and #1 R&B; and became an iconic disco song. It was my friend Damien's favorite disco song ever......he had exquisite taste!

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Michael Schultz directed this kinetic, hyperventilating comedy (scripted by Joel Schumacher) concerning the crazed events that go on within a single 10-hour period at a Los Angeles car wash. The cast of colorful car-wash employees includes Lonnie (Ivan Dixon), an ex-con; Duane (Bill Duke), a militant black activist; and Lindy (Antonio Fargas), an obnoxious homosexual. Sully Boyar plays Mr. B, the frazzled car-wash owner who has to deal with his screwball employees along with his over-educated slip of a son, Irwin (Richard Brestoff), who quotes Mao and wants to radicalize the workers. Also along for the wash and wax are Miss Beverly Hills (Lauren Jones), with a wild assortment of wigs; Marsha (Melanie Mayron), the distracted car wash secretary; a mad bomber (Prof. Irwin Corey), who is terrorizing the neighborhood; and Daddy Rich (Richard Pryor), the founder of the Church of Divine Economic Spirituality, who sports a gold limousine. Danny de Vito, Brooke Adams and others were originally in the cast but their scenes were ultimately deleted.

Note: May want to turn the volume up. This is the result of a 6 minute automatic touchless car wash. The car was dirty on the sides including arches but rims where clean. An average result under these conditions, but would suit dusty / barely dirty cars. The black dots felt oily in nature so is fair to suspect some kind of residue from the washing unit itself. They where easily removable with a microfiber cloth. -
