Startled residents of a Russian city inside the Arctic Circle have been posting photos of a local river that has mysteriously turned blood red.
Photos published on Russian social media appear to the show the Daldykan River near the city of Norilsk flowing vivid burgundy. Russian authorities have yet to establish a reason for the river’s unusual appearance, but local people quickly linked it to a giant metals plant upstream. Russia's Environment Ministry said it was investigating a plant leak as the likely cause.

Russia is an impressive land with an impressive history. The largest country on the planet, its lands cross several time zones and stretch from Europe all the way to the edge of North America. Across its vast expanse can be found mountains, deserts, arctic tundra, vast forests, marshlands and massive plains. Its population is large, and at around 145 million is made up of numerous cultures and religions. While Russian is the primary language of the people, there are around 100 other languages spoken in a country which is home to over 150 ethnicities.
Historically, Russia has experienced a rather turbulent, if impressive past. Growing to become one of the largest empires in the world, the First World War led to the collapse of country as revolution swept through. Several decades as part of the Soviet Union saw Russia maintain a powerful standing in the world, but that too eventually crumbled. In the 1990s, terrible financial problems and political instability saw Russia’s standing in the world drop markedly. The past decade has seen the country stabilize somewhat under the watch of Vladimir Putin. Under Putin, the country has followed a conservative line, emphasizing traditional values and following policies reminiscent of the Soviet-era.
This ‘new’ Russia definitely has the look of the ‘old’ Soviet Union to anyone on the outside. Military buildups, resumption of nuclear bomber flights, aggressive and expansionist foreign policies and the resumption of strong anti-Western sentiments all mark today’s Russia under Putin. In a way, Russian leadership has taken the directionless ship that was Russia in the 1990s and steered it on a new and clear course. This has led to the resumption of butting heads with Western nations, something which was so common over 20 years ago.
While the evening news seems to always have a story or two about what Russia is doing next in the world, it’s what’s happening inside the country that often goes unnoticed. Here, government laws and decrees can seem harsh and short-sighted. Nonetheless, in an effort to impose order and help shape Russia in the best way they see possible, government officials slap a number of bans on various activities and goods – for the good of the people. On the outside looking in, these can look like the act of a dictator but a stream of polls constantly show the Russian people are in support of the government and the direction it is taking the country.

A river outside Russia’s Arctic city of Norilsk has inexplicably turned blood-red, puzzling locals and prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the cause of the anomaly.
The Daldykan River near Norilsk in Siberia lost its natural color on Tuesday, as locals posted jaw-dropping images of the crimson river on social media.
Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology confirmed that it had received reports of river pollution “with an unidentified chemical substance,” saying there could have been an accident at the Norilsk Nickel plant, the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium.
The plant’s administration denied these allegations, however, RIA Novosti news agency reports.
“As of today, the polar division of the [Norilsk Nickel] company cannot confirm any leakage or accidental discharge of industrial waste into the Daldykan River, which could have affected the river’s state,” the company said in a press release. Nonetheless, it has been decided that the plant will temporarily lower its operational capacity and monitor the state of the environment around the facility and in the affected area of the river.
urprisingly, the plant’s press service told the news agency that the river’s color right now is actually its natural one.
Local emergencies service said they had not received any complaints about the river and have therefore not addressed the issue.
A state of emergency has not been declared, according to Norilsk mayor’s office, as the river does not contribute to the city’s water supply.
Locals have been more inquisitive, however, and have enthusiastically suggested reasons for the color change, with some asking whether a new episode of The Crimson Rivers was being filmed in the area, while others have suggested that it’s high time to go fishing, as all of the fish could now pass for salmon. Others blame the mining plant, which locals call by the female name Nadezhda, saying it is having its time of the month.
Some noted that it’s not the first time they have come across such a strange phenomenon, saying that this effect occurs when the river washes out subsurface rock formations, which mostly consist of nickel and copper.

A river outside Russia’s Arctic city of Norilsk has inexplicably turned blood-red, puzzling locals and prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the cause of the anomaly. The Daldykan River near Norilsk in Siberia lost its natural color on Tuesday, as locals posted jaw-dropping images of the crimson river on social media. Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology confirmed that it had received reports of river pollution “with an unidentified chemical substance,” saying there could have been an accident at the Norilsk Nickel plant, the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium. The plant’s administration denied these allegations, however, RIA Novosti news agency reports. “As of today, the polar division of the [Norilsk Nickel] company cannot confirm any leakage or accidental discharge of industrial waste into the Daldykan River, which could have affected the river’s state,” the company said in a press release. Nonetheless, it has been decided that the plant will temporarily lower its operational capacity and monitor the state of the environment around the facility and in the affected area of the river. urprisingly, the plant’s press service told the news agency that the river’s color right now is actually its natural one. Local emergencies service said they had not received any complaints about the river and have therefore not addressed the issue. A state of emergency has not been declared, according to Norilsk mayor’s office, as the river does not contribute to the city’s water supply. Locals have been more inquisitive, however, and have enthusiastically suggested reasons for the color change, with some asking whether a new episode of The Crimson Rivers was being filmed in the area, while others have suggested that it’s high time to go fishing, as all of the fish could now pass for salmon. Others blame the mining plant, which locals call by the female name Nadezhda, saying it is having its time of the month. Some noted that it’s not the first time they have come across such a strange phenomenon, saying that this effect occurs when the river washes out subsurface rock formations, which mostly consist of nickel and copper. Photos published on Russian social media appear to the show the Daldykan River near the city of Norilsk flowing vivid burgundy. Russian authorities have yet to establish a reason for the river’s unusual appearance, but local people quickly linked it to a giant metals plant upstream. Russia's Environment Ministry said it was investigating a plant leak as the likely cause.

Historically, Russia has experienced a rather turbulent, if impressive past. Growing to become one of the largest empires in the world, the First World War led to the collapse of country as revolution swept through. Several decades as part of the Soviet Union saw Russia maintain a powerful standing in the world, but that too eventually crumbled. In the 1990s, terrible financial problems and political instability saw Russia’s standing in the world drop markedly. The past decade has seen the country stabilize somewhat under the watch of Vladimir Putin. Under Putin, the country has followed a conservative line, emphasizing traditional values and following policies reminiscent of the Soviet-era.
This ‘new’ Russia definitely has the look of the ‘old’ Soviet Union to anyone on the outside. Military buildups, resumption of nuclear bomber flights, aggressive and expansionist foreign policies and the resumption of strong anti-Western sentiments all mark today’s Russia under Putin. In a way, Russian leadership has taken the directionless ship that was Russia in the 1990s and steered it on a new and clear course. This has led to the resumption of butting heads with Western nations, something which was so common over 20 years ago.
While the evening news seems to always have a story or two about what Russia is doing next in the world, it’s what’s happening inside the country that often goes unnoticed. Here, government laws and decrees can seem harsh and short-sighted. Nonetheless, in an effort to impose order and help shape Russia in the best way they see possible, government officials slap a number of bans on various activities and goods – for the good of the people. On the outside looking in, these can look like the act of a dictator but a stream of polls constantly show the Russian people are in support of the government and the direction it is taking the country.

A river outside Russia’s Arctic city of Norilsk has inexplicably turned blood-red, puzzling locals and prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the cause of the anomaly.
The Daldykan River near Norilsk in Siberia lost its natural color on Tuesday, as locals posted jaw-dropping images of the crimson river on social media.
Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology confirmed that it had received reports of river pollution “with an unidentified chemical substance,” saying there could have been an accident at the Norilsk Nickel plant, the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium.
The plant’s administration denied these allegations, however, RIA Novosti news agency reports.
“As of today, the polar division of the [Norilsk Nickel] company cannot confirm any leakage or accidental discharge of industrial waste into the Daldykan River, which could have affected the river’s state,” the company said in a press release. Nonetheless, it has been decided that the plant will temporarily lower its operational capacity and monitor the state of the environment around the facility and in the affected area of the river.
urprisingly, the plant’s press service told the news agency that the river’s color right now is actually its natural one.
Local emergencies service said they had not received any complaints about the river and have therefore not addressed the issue.
A state of emergency has not been declared, according to Norilsk mayor’s office, as the river does not contribute to the city’s water supply.
Locals have been more inquisitive, however, and have enthusiastically suggested reasons for the color change, with some asking whether a new episode of The Crimson Rivers was being filmed in the area, while others have suggested that it’s high time to go fishing, as all of the fish could now pass for salmon. Others blame the mining plant, which locals call by the female name Nadezhda, saying it is having its time of the month.
Some noted that it’s not the first time they have come across such a strange phenomenon, saying that this effect occurs when the river washes out subsurface rock formations, which mostly consist of nickel and copper.

Russia, the largest country on earth, which emerged from the post-Soviet economic and political chaos to reassert itself, is facing an HIV/Aids epidemic.
The current rate of HIV is less than 1 percent of Russia's population of 143 million. It's far lower than many other countries, such as South Africa (12,2 percent), which have been battling HIV epidemics.
Russia has one of the fastest-growing rates of HIV/Aids in the world. At the beginning of this year, the number of registered HIV-positive people surpassed one million. The number of Russians living with HIV has almost doubled in the last five years.
The 2016 UNAIDS Prevention Gap Report pointed to Eastern Europe and Central Asia as "the only region in the world where the HIV epidemic continued to rise rapidly."
Russian activists say the government's reluctance to introduce internationally-accepted prevention methods is behind this epidemic. Potential solutions such as sex education, the distribution of condoms to sex workers, methadone therapy and the availability of clean needles to drug addicts are strongly opposed by religious leaders and other conservatives.
It is estimated that over 50 percent of HIV cases in Russia are the result of intravenous drug use. Methadone therapy, however, was made illegal by President Vladimir Putin's government despite being classified as "the most promising method of reducing drug dependency" by the World Health Organization.
Talk to Al Jazeera travels to St Petersburg and Moscow to meet people living with HIV and the activists doing all they can to help.
In St Petersburg, we meet Aleksandr Romanov, 47, who discovered that he was HIV-positive six years ago. He grew up in Kazakhstan, then part of the Soviet Union. He says his infection can be traced back to the post-Soviet effects on society - dramatic changes, which included widespread drug use.
Maria Yakovleva, also known as Masha, is part of Svecha, or Candle Foundation, an organisation which provides support, guidance, education, and hope to those living with HIV. She herself is HIV-positive. Changes need to come from the top, she says.
"There are plenty of things [people need to know] but there is no information [from the government]," she says.
Maksim Malyshev works as a social worker with a local NGO in Moscow which promotes humane drug policies. He worries about the negative impact that the government's approach has on Russians living with HIV. He can't understand whether Russia's leadership simple doesn't care or is just incompetent.
"In my view the problem of HIV infection in Russia exists because the people whose job it is to find ways of preventing HIV in Russia are doing a crap job. They are living in some kind of fantasy world of their own and they have no desire to listen about science-based methods and to the specialists who are working on this problem," he says.

Russia, the largest country on earth, which emerged from the post-Soviet economic and political chaos to reassert itself, is facing an HIV/Aids epidemic.
The current rate of HIV is less than 1 percent of Russia's population of 143 million. It's far lower than many other countries, such as South Africa (12,2 percent), which have been battling HIV epidemics.
Russia has one of the fastest-growing rates of HIV/Aids in the world. At the beginning of this year, the number of registered HIV-positive people surpassed one million. The number of Russians living with HIV has almost doubled in the last five years.
The 2016 UNAIDS Prevention Gap Report pointed to Eastern Europe and Central Asia as "the only region in the world where the HIV epidemic continued to rise rapidly."
Russian activists say the government's reluctance to introduce internationally-accepted prevention methods is behind this epidemic. Potential solutions such as sex education, the distribution of condoms to sex workers, methadone therapy and the availability of clean needles to drug addicts are strongly opposed by religious leaders and other conservatives.
It is estimated that over 50 percent of HIV cases in Russia are the result of intravenous drug use. Methadone therapy, however, was made illegal by President Vladimir Putin's government despite being classified as "the most promising method of reducing drug dependency" by the World Health Organization.
Talk to Al Jazeera travels to St Petersburg and Moscow to meet people living with HIV and the activists doing all they can to help.
In St Petersburg, we meet Aleksandr Romanov, 47, who discovered that he was HIV-positive six years ago. He grew up in Kazakhstan, then part of the Soviet Union. He says his infection can be traced back to the post-Soviet effects on society - dramatic changes, which included widespread drug use.
Maria Yakovleva, also known as Masha, is part of Svecha, or Candle Foundation, an organisation which provides support, guidance, education, and hope to those living with HIV. She herself is HIV-positive. Changes need to come from the top, she says.
"There are plenty of things [people need to know] but there is no information [from the government]," she says.
Maksim Malyshev works as a social worker with a local NGO in Moscow which promotes humane drug policies. He worries about the negative impact that the government's approach has on Russians living with HIV. He can't understand whether Russia's leadership simple doesn't care or is just incompetent.
"In my view the problem of HIV infection in Russia exists because the people whose job it is to find ways of preventing HIV in Russia are doing a crap job. They are living in some kind of fantasy world of their own and they have no desire to listen about science-based methods and to the specialists who are working on this problem," he says.

The United States has accused Russia of grandstanding by calling a UN security council meeting to discuss coalition air strikes in Syria, which Moscow said killed dozens of Syrian soldiers and could endanger a truce deal. The 15-member council met for an hour on Saturday evening after Russia and a war monitoring group said coalition jets bombed a Syrian army position near Deir al-Zor airport....
