Ibiza is a place that looms large in all our imaginations, the sun-kissed, beer-drenched rock in the middle of the Mediterranean where all our hedonistic dreams can come true. But what is it that makes people come back year after year to the same tiny island?

Rave Culture is one of Britain’s great cultural exports, but after its first wave in the late eighties and early nineties, it was soon forced into the underground by stringent new laws and superclubs. But forward 25 years into in the midst of a nationwide purge on the nation’s nightlife, where nearly half of all British clubs have shut down in the last decade, and a new kind of scene has emerged.
Clive Martin investigates this 21st century version of Rave, where young people break into disused spaces with the help of bolt-cutters and complicated squatting laws, to suck on balloons and go hard into the early morning.
But with the police using increasingly extreme tactics to clamp down on these parties, and more than one fatality causing nationwide media panic, can the scene survive?

When Clive Martin embeds with the bare knuckle boxing elite, what he discovers is not dissimilar to Fight Club; IT technicians, builders, lifestyle coaches and even a solicitor, all throwing their unprotected fists into each other's faces. It's a subculture of honour, pride and violence.
As the UK prepares to play host to the first US vs UK bare knuckle title fight in 150 years -- the biggest event the scene has known since it went underground in the 19th Century -- Clive tries to find out if violence is a cause or effect for these angry young men.

Our British asparagus (and quite a few other veg) comes from Clive Martin's fenland farm, Holm Select, in East Anglia.
"Holm is ancient dialect for Fenland Island, which we are -- an island of organic amongst all this conventional farmland." Although the farm's actually below sea level, so would be more of an underwater island. Clive's father and grandfather grew spuds and onions. But adventurous young Clive now grows asparagus, globe artichokes, rhubarb, and a bigillion (oh fine, 14) types of squash.

Clive Martin
Sir Clive Martin, OBE, TD, DL, (born 1935) is a British businessman and a former Lord Mayor of London from 1999-2000.
Martin was born in London and educated at Haileybury and the London College of Printing.
He completed National Service in the Royal Engineers, was commissioned and appointed OBE. He served in and commanded the Honourable Artillery Company earning the Territorial Decoration, and was appointed in 1999 Honorary Colonel of 135 Independent Topographic Squadron RE (Volunteers).
In 1985, Martin was elected as Alderman to the City of London, and served as Sheriff of the City of London in 1996 and Lord Mayor of London for 1999-2000. He has also served as Vice-Chair of the City of London Magistrates Court.
Martin is an active English Freemason, who served from 2006-2007 in the very senior post of Junior Grand Warden of the United Grand Lodge of England. He was initiated in 'British Lodge' No 8 in 1984 and served as Master in the 'Lodge of Assistance' No 2773.
He is Chairman of MPG Ltd., a graphics communications business. In 2009, he was given an honorary doctorate by the University of the Arts London, and is listed as an alumnus of the London College of Communication.

Rave Culture is one of Britain’s great cultural exports, but after its first wave in the late eighties and early nineties, it was soon forced into the underground by stringent new laws and superclubs. But forward 25 years into in the midst of a nationwide purge on the nation’s nightlife, where nearly half of all British clubs have shut down in the last decade, and a new kind of scene has emerged.
Clive Martin investigates this 21st century version of Rave, where young people break into disused spaces with the help of bolt-cutters and complicated squatting laws, to suck on balloons and go hard into the early morning.
But with the police using increasingly extreme tactics to clamp down on these parties, and more than one fatality causing nationwide media panic, can the scene survive?

"Holm is ancient dialect for Fenland Island, which we are -- an island of organic amongst all this conventional farmland." Although the farm's actually below sea level, so would be more of an underwater island. Clive's father and grandfather grew spuds and onions. But adventurous young Clive now grows asparagus, globe artichokes, rhubarb, and a bigillion (oh fine, 14) types of squash.

But out of the ashes of revolution has risen a new generation. Slava Lepsheev, who’d lost his job because of the financial crisis triggered by the war, had had enough, and started Cxema, a raw, hard and hypnotic techno rave that he took to whatever semi-legal venue he could set a soundsystem up in. The 2014 revolution brought Kiev nightlife to a complete standstill. As protests turned into riots, and government security forces opened fire on protestors, the country fell into crisis. But out of the ashes of revolution has risen a new generation. Slava Lepsheev, who’d lost his job because of the financial crisis triggered by the war, had had enough, and started Cxema, a raw, hard and hypnotic techno rave that he took to whatever semi-legal venue he could set a soundsystem up in. So together with Slava, and the city’s brightest young lights, we followed young Kiev as they prepared for a night at Cxema, from building the venue to watching the sunrise break.

Rave Culture is one of Britain’s great cultural exports, but after its first wave in the late eighties and early nineties, it was soon forced into the underground by stringent new laws and superclubs. But forward 25 years into in the midst of a nationwide purge on the nation’s nightlife, where nearly half of all British clubs have shut down in the last decade, and a new kind of scene has emerged. Rave Culture is one of Britain’s great cultural exports, but after its first wave in the late eighties and early nineties, it was soon forced into the underground by stringent new laws and superclubs. But forward 25 years into in the midst of a nationwide purge on the nation’s nightlife, where nearly half of all British clubs have shut down in the last decade, and a new kind of scene has emerged.
