Ghaziabad councillor murder: Police arrest woman

Ghaziabad Police have arrested a woman in connection with the murder of Chhote Lal (52), a local councillor who was allegedly attacked by four persons Wednesday night.

Lal, who was sleeping outside his residence, was allegedly attacked with sticks and rods.

“In the police complaint, four persons have been named… We have a person, related to the victim, as an eyewitness in the case,” said Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) K S Emmanuel. The councillor was alone at his residence when the incident took place as his family lives in Ballia, said police.

Lal was rushed to the government MMG Hospital in Ghaziabad and later referred to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. “He had sustained severe head injuries… at 8 pm Thursday, we were informed that he had succumbed to injuries,” said Emmanuel.

Police arrested the woman, identified as Afsana, Friday morning. “Preliminary investigations reveal there was enmity between the accused and the councillor. We are yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder. A special team has been formed to nab the three other accused,” said the SSP.

On Friday, members of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation held demonstrations and demanded action against the accused, as well as compensation for the councillor’s family.
