Sparta (Doric Greek: Σπάρτα, Spártā; Attic Greek: Σπάρτη, Spártē) or Lacedaemon (/ˌlæsəˈdiːmən/; Λακεδαίμων, Lakedaímōn) was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece, situated on the banks of the Eurotas River in Laconia, in south-eastern Peloponnese. Around 650 BC, it rose to become the dominant military land-power in ancient Greece.
Given its military pre-eminence, Sparta was recognized as the overall leader of the combined Greek forces during the Greco-Persian Wars. Between 431 and 404 BC, Sparta was the principal enemy of Athens during the Peloponnesian War, from which it emerged victorious, though at great cost of lives lost. Sparta's defeat by Thebes in the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC ended Sparta's prominent role in Greece. However, it maintained its political independence until the Roman conquest of Greece in 146 BC. It then underwent a long period of decline, especially in the Middle Ages, when many Spartans moved to live in Mystras. Modern Sparta is the capital of the Greek regional unit of Laconia and a center for the processing of goods such as citrus and olives.
Greece (i/ɡriːs/ GREESS; Greek: Ελλάδα, Elláda [eˈlaða]), officially the Hellenic Republic (Greek: Ελληνική Δημοκρατία, Ellīnikī́ Dīmokratía [eliniˈci ðimokraˈti.a]) and known since ancient times as Hellas (/ˈhɛləs/; Greek: Ελλάς, Ellás), is a country located in southeastern Europe. According to the 2011 census, Greece's population is around 10.8 million. Athens is the nation's capital and largest city, followed by Thessaloniki, which is commonly referred to as the co-capital.
Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Situated on the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula, it shares land borders with Albania to the northwest, the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north and Turkey to the northeast. Greece consists of nine geographic regions: Macedonia, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Thessaly, Epirus, the Aegean Islands (including the Dodecanese and Cyclades), Thrace, Crete, and the Ionian Islands. The Aegean Sea lies to the east of the mainland, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Greece has the longest coastline on the Mediterranean Basin and the 11th longest coastline in the world at 13,676 km (8,498 mi) in length, featuring a vast number of islands, of which 227 are inhabited. Eighty percent of Greece is mountainous, with Mount Olympus being the highest peak at 2,918 metres (9,573 ft).

Also known as the Leonidaion or Leonidaeon, this 5th century structure is the supposed tomb of King Leonidas. It is located in the center of modern Sparti. There is no evidence linking this structure to Leonidas and no one knows for certain where his remains are located. The massive stone blocks are still impressive and must have been an important and beautiful building. The structure's layout suggests that it was a temple, perhaps dedicated to Apollo. Battle of Thermopylae This is SPARTA A Greek force of approximately 7,000 men marched north to block the pass in the summer of 480 BC. The Persian army, alleged by the ancient sources to have numbered over one million but today considered to have been much smaller (various figures are given by scholars ranging between about 100,000 and 150,000 arrived at the pass in late August or early September. The vastly outnumbered Greeks held off the Persians for seven days (including three of battle) before the rear-guard was annihilated in one of history's most famous last stands. During two full days of battle the small force led by King Leonidas I of Sparta blocked the only road by which the massive Persian army could pass. After the second day of battle a local resident named betrayed the Gre...

With my sweet travel companion, we visited Sparta, Greece. In this video you will see the modern statue of Leonidas, the ancient acropolis, the Roman Theater and, somewhere, the Santuary of Athena.
Sparta was a warrior society in ancient Greece that reached the height of its power after defeating rival city-state Athens in the Peloponnesian War (431-404 B.C.). Spartan culture was centered on loyalty to the state and military service. At age 7, Spartan boys entered a rigorous state-sponsored education, military training and socialization program. Known as the Agoge, the system emphasized duty, discipline and endurance. Although Spartan women were not active in the military, they were educated and enjoyed more status and freedom than other Greek women. Because Spartan men were professional soldiers, all manual labor was done by a slave class, the Helots. Despite their military prowess, the Spartans’ dominance was short-lived: In 371 B.C., they were defeated by Thebes at the Battle of L...
Sparta is one extreme civilization to have ever walked on Earth. Relatively early in Greek history, even before the Classical World had begun, the Spartans drove through a radical social and political revolution. In effect, all Spartans are made to be equal; really equal. And they developed key concepts we still use today, like the importance of self-sacrifice for the common good or the value of duties and of rights. In short, all Spartans aimed to be as perfectly human as humanly possible. Every single of our utopic ideas today, can draw their roots from the Spartan example. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 → → GET A T-SHIRT - http://shop.spreadshirt.com/toptenz →Top 10 Objects That Were Clearly Invented Just to Annoy Physi...
Read your free e-book: http://copydl.space/mebk/50/en/B00VET7AKY/book The end of the Peloponnesian War saw Sparta emerge as the dominant power in the Greek world. Had she used this position wisely her hegemony might have been secure. As it was, she embarked on actions that her former allies, Thebes and Korinth, refused to support. The rise of Thebes as a threatening power to Sparta's control of Greece was largely the result of the brilliant exploits of Epaminondas and Pelopidas whose obvious examination of Spartan tactics allowed them to provide counters to them. While noting the political issues, Godfrey Hutchinson's focus is upon the strategic and tactical elements of warfare in a period almost wholly coinciding with the reign of the brilliant commander, Agesilaos, one of the joint kings...
Chionis of Sparta , or Chionis of Laconia, was an athlete of ancient Greece listed by Eusebius of Caesarea as three times victor in the stadion race of the 29th, 30th and 31st Olympiad .The first to win the stadion three times in a row, he was also notable for his jumping records in the ancient Olympic Games.Records suggest that in the 656 BC Olympics Chionis jumped a then record of 7 meters and 5 centimetres. If accurate, such a record would have won Chionis the inaugural Olympic title of the modern Olympic Games in 1896 and placed him among the top eight at a further ten Olympics, up to and including the 1952 Games of Helsinki. Ancient Greece. The two city-states of ATHENS and SPARTA were heavy-hitting rivals, each of which thought their preferred ways of life and culture were superior to the other. But who were these two groups of people? What did they believe in and how DID they live? Ancient Sparta Sparta - the main town area Laconia (south-eastern part of the Peloponnese), most of the Doric from all states of ancient Greece. Ancient Sparta was located on the west bank of the river Eurotas and extended to the north of the modern town of Sparta. Laconia - the abbreviated name of the area that was called Sparta completely, so the inhabitants of the area often called "Lacedaemonians", which is practically equivalent to the words "Spartan" or "Spartans". Sparta, whose name may mean "scattered" (offered other interpretations), consisted of manors and estates scattered throughout the area, the center of which was a small hill, which later became the acropolis. Originally the city had no walls, and remained true to this principle up to 2 in. BC. During excavations of the Br...

Bettany Hughes chronicles the rise and fall of one of the most extreme civilisations the world has ever seen, one founded on discipline, sacrifice and frugality where the onus was on the collective and the goal was to create the perfect state and the perfect warrior. Hughes reveals the secrets and complexities of everyday Spartan life; homosexuality was compulsory, money was outlawed, equality was enforced, weak boys were put to death and women enjoyed a level of social and sexual freedom that was unheard of in the ancient world. It was a nation of fearsome fighters where a glorious death was treasured. This is aptly demonstrated by the kamikaze last stand at Thermopylae, where King Leonidas and his warriors fought with swords, hands and teeth to fend off the Persians. But there was bitter...
Everything I put into this box
Says we're moving
All these photographs and books and clocks
What are we doing
You and I in
Separate cars
Where are we going
Everytime I wake up on my own
I know we're changing
Where's this thing and ride are gonna go
But I was saying
You and I
in different rooms
Where are we going
[Chorus:]
What are we running from
What are we [2x]
Tell me what we've become
What have we [2x]
Can't you see
This isn't what we really want
What are we
Where are we going
Everything you put into my heart
Is there forever
Baby we've got to stop this drift apart
And stay together
You and I should be as one
It's now or forever
[Chorus]
Where are we going
going no, no, no
What are we waiting for
We've got to try some more
What have we [2x]
Tell me this isn't what you really want
What are we
I'm not going
What are we waiting for
WE've got to try some more
What have we [2x]
Tell me this isn't waht you really want
What are we
