People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA (/ˈpiːtɑː/); stylized PeTA) is an American animal rights organization based in Norfolk, Virginia, and led by Ingrid Newkirk, its international president. A nonprofit corporation with 300 employees, it claims that it has 3 million members and supporters and is the largest animal rights group in the world. Its slogan is "animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way."
Founded in March 1980, by Newkirk and fellow animal rights activist Alex Pacheco, the organization first caught the public's attention in the summer of 1981 during what became known as the Silver Spring monkeys case, a widely publicized dispute about experiments conducted on 17 macaque monkeys inside the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. The case lasted ten years, involved the only police raid on an animal laboratory in the United States, triggered an amendment in 1985, to that country's Animal Welfare Act, and established PETA as an internationally known organization. Today it focuses on four core issues—opposition to factory farming, fur farming, animal testing, and animals in entertainment. It also campaigns against eating meat, fishing, the killing of animals regarded as pests, the keeping of chained backyard dogs, cock fighting, dog fighting, and bullfighting.

Google Tech Talk (more information below) March 16, 2011 Presented by Ingrid Newkirk, founder PETA.org ABSTRACT Ms. Newkirk will talk about PETA's philosophy and the value of kindness to all. She will explain why PETA sometimes produces provocative posters featuring celebrities posing naked, and the worth of generating internet buzz in a media age, discussing the power of video to change hearts and minds and to get people involved. Her discussion will pinpoint the causes of the tragic overpopulation crisis for dogs and cats in the U.S., what this means for homeless animals and practical ways in which people can help. She hopes to inform the audience about the wonder of animals, their cultures and behaviors and how easy it is to make kind choices.
In 2015, an eyewitness visited Suzhou, China, which encompasses more than 300 circuses, to go inside 10 different circuses and animal training facilities. What they documented there was horrifying. Bowmanville Zoo owner Michael Hackenberger has been caught on camera describing his cruel training methods. In the video, Hackenberger describes using a whip as a "disincentive," saying that punishment is the only way to force an animal to perform. He goes on to boast about his power using the whip to "carve my initials in their side," and while brandishing a stick—as a wolf cowers on the floor off camera—he says, "You smack 'em and they generally fold like a house of cards. … And that's the beauty of these things." In the background, a wolf in a cage can also be seen pacing—a sign of severe stress in caged animals. A Bowmanville Zoo administrator later acknowledges Hackenberger's violent training methods, stating, "You throw them down on the ground so they know who's boss. That's basica...

Meat-eaters across the country are feeling the effects of a “deflategate” crisis taking place right on their home turf, in the bedroom. More than half of men between the ages of 40 and 70 have to throw the game because of the difficulty they have even getting started. Turns out, the cholesterol in meat, eggs, and dairy products slows the flow of blood to all the body’s organs—not just the heart. Want to know more? Animal flesh is often processed, cut into strips, ground up, or formed into nuggets, patties, and other non-animal shapes, it’s easy to forget that we’re eating the decaying body parts of another being who was once alive. Will you change the life of a dog forced to live outside year-round in all weather conditions? Dogs left outdoors are often chained or penned without adequate shelter and suffer terribly. Our goal is to educate guardians about good animal care, especially the basic notion of allowing dogs to live indoors as members of the family. Unfortunately, changing attitudes takes time. When people insist on keeping their dogs outside and refuse to relinquish them, PETA works to improve the dogs' lives. www.PETA.ORG/Doghouse PETA Saves: http://features.peta.org/petasaves/ PETA: http://PETA.org FAQs: http://www.peta.org/about-peta/faq/
Here's another reason why we all need to be "watchdogs" for dogs and cats who are kept chained or caged in our neighbors' backyards, allowed to roam outdoors unsupervised, or otherwise neglected: embedded collars. When someone puts a collar on a young animal and doesn't bother to loosen it as the animal grows—or when someone places a too-tight collar or rope around the neck of a chained dog—the collar can actually grow into the animal's neck, leaving the dog or cat in extreme misery and pain. Throughout China, circuses, traveling shows, and roadside zoos force animals—including bears, monkeys, tigers, lions, dogs, and others—to perform for the public. A PETA Asia investigator visited 10 different circuses and animal training facilities in the city of Suzhou, which alone encompasses more than 300 circuses, and documented animal abuse and suffering on a massive scale. PETA Asia's investigator documented that bear cubs are chained or tethered to a wall and forced to remain upright, sometimes for hours, in order to train them to walk on their hind legs. If they can’t hold themselves up, they risk choking and hanging themselves. Forcing bears to stand for prolonged periods of time on their hind legs can cause lifelong physical problems. In a word, overpopulation. There are too many cats and dogs, and it’s a crisis—and spaying and neutering is the single most important thing that we can do to help end it. Animals can’t wear condoms, so it’s up to us to take responsibility and get them “fixed.” Learn more: http://www.peta.org/blog/heed-dancing-condoms-get-cat-dog-spayed-neutered/ Subscribe: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=officialpeta The website the meat industry doesn't want you to see: http://meat.org How to go vegan: http://features.peta.org/how-to-go-vegan/ PETA Saves: http://features.peta.org/petasaves/ PETA: http://PETA.org FAQs: http://www.peta.org/about-peta/faq/
