This month sees a new crop of photographers inducted into the Magnum agency – celebrated for its focus on documentary and humanity. First up is Bieke Depoorter, who graduates to becoming a fully fledged member. For her series Ou Menya, pictured here, she travelled through Russia photographing people in whose homes she spent a single night. She repeated the tactic in the US for her project I Am About to Call It a Day, pictured here, and has since focused her documentary work on single urban areas such as Istanbul, and Sète in the south of France

Jérôme Sessini, who also graduates to becoming a full member, has recently been documenting the civil war in Ukraine. This photo shows an Orthodox priest blessing protesters on a barricade in Kiev

He has reported from other conflict regions, such as Aleppo in Syria – pictured here in 2013, with mirrors being used to observe snipers – as well as Lebanon, Libya and Iraq

Diana Markosian, pictured here with her father, explores her Armenian heritage in her work. She is named as a nominee member

She went to Armenia to meet with survivors of the country’s genocide. Using their memories of their childhood villages, she travelled to what remained of them and presented the subsequent images to the survivors. ‘They grabbed at them, as if by holding them close they could be transported back there,’ she recalled in a Guardian interview

Another new nominee member is Matt Stuart, a British street photographer who has spent hundreds of hours trawling London

He uses three rolls of film a day in his quest for the perfect serendipitous moment. ‘Moments happen, and before you’ve had time to marvel at them, they’re already gone,’ he says
