Oton Death Mask This golden death mask was discovered in the 1960’s in the Philipines and is believed to have been made from the late 14 century to the early 15 century AD. Nothing like this has been recovered previously from this country. This was most likely imported from China to the city of Oton which was a bustling trade hub at its time so ideas and traditions were easily shared to the citizens of this city. 8. The Mother Boat In 2012, archeologists have what they believe to be the largest plank boat in the Philippines history. This boat dates back to 800 years old and was nicknamed the motherboard and was made centuries before Europeans introduced advanced shipping technology to the area. It’s an estimated 75 feet long and was used to trade various goods along the area. 7. Empress Palace Excavation In Singapore, archaeologists began digging in the front of the Victoria Theatre and Concert hall and found an extraordinary amount of artifacts in only a few weeks. These artifacts include Chinese ceramics, jars and small sculptures that are all at least 700 years old. It took a few weeks to haul over 6000 pounds of priceless items. This was by far the largest excavation site in Singapore and was over 3000 square feet. 6. Oldest Known Pottery The oldest known pottery was uncovered in one of the most inhospitable locations and dates up to 3000 years old. The broken fragments were found in a region where cultures that survived off the sea who was known for their skills in making pottery. This exciting discovery will likely give us new insight into how pot building was among ancient cultures in Southeast Asia. 5. Shipwreck of the San Diego San Diego was the name given to a Spanish Galleon that sank in the 1600’s killing 259 people. The ship was discovered in 1992, off Fortune Island. The found some remarkable artifacts with it.The boat was armed to the teeth, with 197 cannon balls, 14 cannons, 31 sword fragments and some priceless Spanish armor. The underwater French archeologists found a total of 34,407 artifacts, striking it rich in the process. Many bones were also uncovered believed to be the remains of the unfortunate crew. 4. Cyanide Millipede Scientist have discovered a new rare breed of millipede in Southeast Asia’s Mekong Delta. If a pink centipede isn’t already scary enough, it also spits out cyanide as a defense mechanism. If I saw this thing I wouldn’t take the chance of getting bit. This creature was first documented in 2007 and now has a cool name to go with it. It’s officially named the shocking pink dragon millipede. It’s not just pink to look cool but the bright color warns off predators from attacking. I don’t think I would attack this thing anytime soon. 3. Giant Spider Arachnophobes look away! This giant spider found in Laos may give you nightmares but is an exciting find for biologists who aren’t creeped out by these things. The first reported sighting of this creepy crawler was documented in 2006 and is one of 88 spiders discovered in the Mekong Region between 1997 and 2007. So there’s probably a lot more like this out there, crawling around in the jungle. This one here was rather timid. It’s probably more afraid of you than you are of it. Or maybe not. 2. Chinese Gold Discovery In case China wasn’t already getting powerful enough, a new discovery of raw materials may make them even wealthier than before. They estimate there is over 16 billion dollars worth of gold undersea off the coast of southeast China. A massive gold ore was found that has over 470 tons of pure gold but the Chinese need to find some way to mine it. I’m sure they will. It’s less than a mile undersea and will require more advanced technology than they already have in order to drill this deep. 1. Bangladesh Buddhist Temple Archeologists found a Buddhist temple in Bangladesh deep beneath the surface of the earth that is unlike anything they’ve seen before. This is where many believe an important Buddhist scholar and teach Atish Dipankar spent most of his life, he was also born over a thousand years ago, making Buddhism a little more widespread at that time than we previously thought. Scientists uncovered many priceless artifacts and it’s now Bangladesh’s richest historical site. An ancient city and a buried temple were the main findings but they are still hoping to find out more about this buddhist center of teaching.
