Traveling Vietnam: Hanoi to Halong Bay.
Hey guys! Today we're taking you with us to Halong Bay. This is our last stop in Vietnam, before flying back to Bangkok and preparing for the next adventure... India.
This was our first time exploring Halong Bay, I imagine many years ago it was a pristine wonder of the world. The limestone cliffs rising out of the emerald waters are awe-inspiring. Unfortunately the breathtakingly beautiful waterscape has been tainted, with trash... lots of it. Some areas were cleaner than others, the area we kayaked through was especially gorgeous. Ti Top island had a nice viewpoint, however, the beach itself was over crowded, and while there were many people swimming there, we opted to skip the swimming. One of highlights of the trip was exploring the cave.
While it was worth experiencing Halong Bay, it was our first and last time. Thanks for coming on the adventure with us!

It is one of the most beautiful places we have ever seen! It’s filled with giant lime stone karsts that jut out of the water in every direction for miles.
The best way to experience the bay is by a luxury cruise. There are tons of cruise ship operators offering cruises through Halong Bay. The cruises range from cheap backpack boats to five start luxury cruise ships. Since visiting Halong Bay is most likely a once in a lifetime experience, we decided to splurge on a 5 star luxury cruise to ensure that we had the best experience possible!
We booked our cruise with Signature Cruise and we were elated with our experience. Seriously, we don’t have a bad thing to say about Signature Cruises, and that should mean a lot coming from me because when I splurge on an experience I am very critical. Also, the staff treated us like royalty! They made our experience even better.
Our luxurious cruise through Halong Bay started with an amazing lunch served while we were cruising to a floating fishing village. After arriving at the floating village we were rowed around the village in a row boat by one of the women who lived in the floating village. After our row boat ride was completed, we visited a pearl farm to learn how pearls are made. To be completely honest, this sounded kind of lame to me when I read it on the itinerary, but it was actually really interesting!
After leaving the pearl farm, we were taken back to the cruise ship. After an hour or so of relaxing and taking in the beautiful views of Halong Bay, we had a cooking class where we learned to make fresh spring rolls. After the cooking class we enjoyed happy hour with more beautiful views. After happy hour, a delicious five course dinner was served aboard the boat. After dinner I had the opportunity to try my hand at squid fishing. I got really lucky and managed to catch 10!

http://thehappypassport.com - This is the second time in 2014 that I've done a Halong Bay cruise in Vietnam.
I booked through Alibaba's Hotel and Restaurant in Cat Ba.
For $25 I got:
A full day (8 hour) boat tour in and around Cat Ba Island/Ha Long Bay, Vietnam.
A semi-private tour (only 3 people in our group!) with 2 tour guides
A visit to a floating fishing village
A visit to Monkey Island (I saw two monkeys - score!)
An AMAZING authentic Vietnamese lunch cooked for us on the boat (fresh fish/seafood/shrimp, steamed rice w/spices and sauces, chicken and pineapple, clams, and homemade rice wine)
2 hours kayaking in CAVES - it's amazing, you kayak underneath the limestone cliffs and suddenly emerge in this lagoon. There are three "secret lakes" that connect to each other. They are unbelievably quiet, peaceful, and magical.
BEWARE: I've heard nothing but horror stories about booking a Halong Bay cruise through Hanoi - people get stuck on the boat for hours, and two of my friends got kicked OFF the boat b/c the company had overbooked. They had to find last minute accommodation for the night even though they'd already paid to stay overnight on the boat. Oh, and no refund was offered. No thank you!

We couldn't believe the CRAZY level of positive reviews for Indochina Junk company without seeing it for ourselves. For those of you looking to cruise Ha Long Bay (Halong Bay), we highly recommend the Dragon's Pearl. It really is that good.
This video shows what you can expect from the 2 day / 1 night cruise package, based on our experience with the same package. We went in early Oct. I left out the room. It was big enough, with a really nice bathroom - for a small boat. Transport both ways from Hanoi was quick and in a modern van with AC and a skilled driver. If you were staying in the same Hanoi hotel before and after your cruise, I would recommend arranging to leave some of your luggage there - rather than drag it all to the boat and back.
We don't normally "splurge" for items like this and I'm glad we did. I know all of travel is a splurge really. But it really feels like you get exactly your money's worth on The Dragon's Pearl. I wish we had booked the two night. It includes a meal in the cave on the 2nd night.
The crew, ticketing & tour staff as well as our our boatsman were all friendly and constantly helpful. There are actually multiple Dragon's Pearl level junks. A exact copy of our boat toured with us - but with French speaking crew and guests. Neat.

Ha Long Bay (Vietnamese: Vịnh Hạ Long, 
listen, literally: "descending dragon bay") is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a popular travel destination, located in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam. Administratively, the bay belongs to Hạ Long City, Cẩm Phả town, and part of Van Don district. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes. Ha Long Bay is a center of a larger zone which includes Bái Tử Long bay to the northeast, and Cát Bà islands to the southwest. These larger zones share similar geological, geographical, geomorphological, climate, and cultural characters.
Ha Long Bay has an area of around 1,553 km2, including 1,960–2,000 islets, most of which are limestone. The core of the bay has an area of 334 km2 with a high density of 775 islets. The limestone in this bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments. The evolution of the karst in this bay has taken 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate. The geo-diversity of the environment in the area has created biodiversity, including a tropical evergreen biosystem, oceanic and sea shore biosystem. Ha Long Bay is home to 14 endemic floral species and 60 endemic faunal species.

http://thehappypassport.com - This is the second time in 2014 that I've done a Halong Bay cruise in Vietnam. I booked through Alibaba's Hotel and Restaurant in Cat Ba. For $25 I got: A full day (8 hour) boat tour in and around Cat Ba Island/Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. A semi-private tour (only 3 people in our group!) with 2 tour guides A visit to a floating fishing village A visit to Monkey Island (I saw two monkeys - score!) An AMAZING authentic Vietnamese lunch cooked for us on the boat (fresh fish/seafood/shrimp, steamed rice w/spices and sauces, chicken and pineapple, clams, and homemade rice wine) 2 hours kayaking in CAVES - it's amazing, you kayak underneath the limestone cliffs and suddenly emerge in this lagoon. There are three "secret lakes" that connect to each other. They are unbelievably quiet, peaceful, and magical. BEWARE: I've heard nothing but horror stories about booking a Halong Bay cruise through Hanoi - people get stuck on the boat for hours, and two of my friends got kicked OFF the boat b/c the company had overbooked. They had to find last minute accommodation for the night even though they'd already paid to stay overnight on the boat. Oh, and no refund was offered. No thank you! http://thehappypassport.com -

We couldn't believe the CRAZY level of positive reviews for Indochina Junk company without seeing it for ourselves. For those of you looking to cruise Ha Long Bay (Halong Bay), we highly recommend the Dragon's Pearl. It really is that good. This video shows what you can expect from the 2 day / 1 night cruise package, based on our experience with the same package. We went in early Oct. I left out the room. It was big enough, with a really nice bathroom - for a small boat. Transport both ways from Hanoi was quick and in a modern van with AC and a skilled driver. If you were staying in the same Hanoi hotel before and after your cruise, I would recommend arranging to leave some of your luggage there - rather than drag it all to the boat and back. We don't normally "splurge" for items like this and I'm glad we did. I know all of travel is a splurge really. But it really feels like you get exactly your money's worth on The Dragon's Pearl. I wish we had booked the two night. It includes a meal in the cave on the 2nd night. The crew, ticketing & tour staff as well as our our boatsman were all friendly and constantly helpful. There are actually multiple Dragon's Pearl level junks. A exact copy of our boat toured with us - but with French speaking crew and guests. Hey guys! Today we're taking you with us to Halong Bay. This is our last stop in Vietnam, before flying back to Bangkok and preparing for the next adventure... India.
This was our first time exploring Halong Bay, I imagine many years ago it was a pristine wonder of the world. The limestone cliffs rising out of the emerald waters are awe-inspiring. Unfortunately the breathtakingly beautiful waterscape has been tainted, with trash... lots of it. Some areas were cleaner than others, the area we kayaked through was especially gorgeous. Ti Top island had a nice viewpoint, however, the beach itself was over crowded, and while there were many people swimming there, we opted to skip the swimming. One of highlights of the trip was exploring the cave.
While it was worth experiencing Halong Bay, it was our first and last time. Thanks for coming on the adventure with us!

If you’ve never been to Halong Bay, you need to add taking a luxury cruise through Halong Bay to your bucket list! Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a good reason. It is one of the most beautiful places we have ever seen! It’s filled with giant lime stone karsts that jut out of the water in every direction for miles.
The best way to experience the bay is by a luxury cruise. There are tons of cruise ship operators offering cruises through Halong Bay. The cruises range from cheap backpack boats to five start luxury cruise ships. Since visiting Halong Bay is most likely a once in a lifetime experience, we decided to splurge on a 5 star luxury cruise to ensure that we had the best experience possible!
We booked our cruise with Signature Cruise and we were elated with our experience. Seriously, we don’t have a bad thing to say about Signature Cruises, and that should mean a lot coming from me because when I splurge on an experience I am very critical. Also, the staff treated us like royalty! They made our experience even better.
Our luxurious cruise through Halong Bay started with an amazing lunch served while we were cruising to a floating fishing village. After arriving at the floating village we were rowed around the village in a row boat by one of the women who lived in the floating village. After our row boat ride was completed, we visited a pearl farm to learn how pearls are made. To be completely honest, this sounded kind of lame to me when I read it on the itinerary, but it was actually really interesting!
After leaving the pearl farm, we were taken back to the cruise ship. After an hour or so of relaxing and taking in the beautiful views of Halong Bay, we had a cooking class where we learned to make fresh spring rolls. After the cooking class we enjoyed happy hour with more beautiful views. After happy hour, a delicious five course dinner was served aboard the boat. After dinner I had the opportunity to try my hand at squid fishing. I got really lucky and managed to catch 10!

I booked through Alibaba's Hotel and Restaurant in Cat Ba.
For $25 I got:
A full day (8 hour) boat tour in and around Cat Ba Island/Ha Long Bay, Vietnam.
A semi-private tour (only 3 people in our group!) with 2 tour guides
A visit to a floating fishing village
A visit to Monkey Island (I saw two monkeys - score!)
An AMAZING authentic Vietnamese lunch cooked for us on the boat (fresh fish/seafood/shrimp, steamed rice w/spices and sauces, chicken and pineapple, clams, and homemade rice wine)
2 hours kayaking in CAVES - it's amazing, you kayak underneath the limestone cliffs and suddenly emerge in this lagoon. There are three "secret lakes" that connect to each other. They are unbelievably quiet, peaceful, and magical.
BEWARE: I've heard nothing but horror stories about booking a Halong Bay cruise through Hanoi - people get stuck on the boat for hours, and two of my friends got kicked OFF the boat b/c the company had overbooked. They had to find last minute accommodation for the night even though they'd already paid to stay overnight on the boat. Oh, and no refund was offered. No thank you!

We couldn't believe the CRAZY level of positive reviews for Indochina Junk company without seeing it for ourselves. For those of you looking to cruise Ha Long Bay (Halong Bay), we highly recommend the Dragon's Pearl. It really is that good.
This video shows what you can expect from the 2 day / 1 night cruise package, based on our experience with the same package. We went in early Oct. I left out the room. It was big enough, with a really nice bathroom - for a small boat. Transport both ways from Hanoi was quick and in a modern van with AC and a skilled driver. If you were staying in the same Hanoi hotel before and after your cruise, I would recommend arranging to leave some of your luggage there - rather than drag it all to the boat and back.

We couldn't believe the CRAZY level of positive reviews for Indochina Junk company without seeing it for ourselves. For those of you looking to cruise Ha Long Bay (Halong Bay), we highly recommend the Dragon's Pearl. It really is that good.
This video shows what you can expect from the 2 day / 1 night cruise package, based on our experience with the same package. We went in early Oct. I left out the room. It was big enough, with a really nice bathroom - for a small boat. Transport both ways from Hanoi was quick and in a modern van with AC and a skilled driver. If you were staying in the same Hanoi hotel before and after your cruise, I would recommend arranging to leave some of your luggage there - rather than drag it all to the boat and back.

Halong Bay is 1,553km2 and includes 1,960 islets, most made of limestone. Nearly 500 years ago, it was called the 'rock wonder in the sky' by poet Nguyen Trai in his verse Lo Nhap Van Don.
The geo-diversity of the environment has created an incredible range of biology spread over tropical evergreen, oceanic and sea shore ecosystems. While tourism and industry have taken a toll on the ecology, constant efforts to practice sustainable bio-tourism ensure that we will continue to enjoy this natural wonder in a responsible manner.
