Positive thinking tips are likely the last thing you are thinking about when hard times rear their ugly heads in your life. From personal tragedy or a major illness to loss of a job, financial woes, or something else altogether, when you are going through hard times, you feel like life has completely kicked you until you are down on the ground, and the life kicked you again once more for spite. It's easy to look around at friends and neighbors whose lives all seem better and happier than yours and to feel jaded, disillusioned, and even jealous.
It is important to recognize that positive thinking tips can make you feel uplifted and more energized, and this can translate into other aspects of your life as well. It can make those around you feel better, and it can even change your own life path. It is not easy to smile and think positive thoughts when you are going through tough times, but finding the strength and will to think good thoughts can really change your life and help you out of your tough times.

Each year a prominent public figure who has performed exemplary public service addresses the students, faculty, alumni and friends of the New York University School of Law. This series provides an opportunity to focus on the significance of having all or a portion of one’s career dedicated to public service and how that public service can positively impact our society’s dynamically changing legal, governmental and social policy.
More about Senator Heidi Heitkamp
US Senator Heidi Heitkamp is the first female Senator elected from North Dakota. She took the oath of office on January 3, 2013.
Already in her short time in the Senate, Senator Heitkamp has quickly become a proven Senator who works across the aisle to fight for North Dakotans. Senator Heitkamp has personally shown that if Senators work together, it can lead to real solutions.
As a former director of the one-of-a-kind Dakota Gasification synfuels plant, Senator Heitkamp has a long record of serving as a champion for North Dakota’s energy jobs and industry. She is continuing those efforts in the Senate, working to responsibly harness North Dakota’s energy resources, promoting the state’s all-of-the-above energy plan which she believes should serve as a model for the entire country, and fighting to lift the 40-year old ban on exporting US crude oil.
Senator Heitkamp’s committee assignments have included: Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry; Indian Affairs; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Senator Heitkamp previously served as North Dakota’s Attorney General, battling drug dealers, protecting senior citizens from scams, and working to keep sexual predators off streets and away from kids, even after their prison terms were up. During her time as North Dakota’s Attorney General, Senator Heitkamp brokered an agreement between 46 states and the tobacco industry, which forced the tobacco industry to tell the truth about smoking and health.

Gen. Robert B. Abrams takes charge of FORSCOM as Gen. Mark A. Milley departs to become 39th Army Chief of Staff.
FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Gen. Robert B. Abrams took charge of the Army's largest command, Aug. 10, Monday, as his predecessor, Gen. Mark A. Milley, relinquished the U.S. Army Forces Command colors and departed for duty in Washington, D.C., to become the 39th chief of staff of the Army.
By accepting the colors bearing the distinctive blue, white and red disk that makes up the U.S. Army Forces Command insignia, Abrams became the 22nd commanding general of FORSCOM.
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno noted that Abrams is the fifth commanding general to lead FORSCOM since he's been the Army's chief of staff, "but the good news is they all seem to go on to bigger and better things."
"Mark, you're an incredibly gifted officer … you have the complete confidence of our leadership and I know that many challenges await you in the Pentagon that will require patience, candor, team building, and a thorough knowledge of the joint and organizational environment, the multi-national world that we live in today. Those challenges will require strong, but balanced leadership of character. So I'm incredibly confident of everything I've seen of Mark Milley over the last 20 years that we have the right man for the job," Odierno said.
Abrams' most recent assignment was as the senior military assistant to the Secretary of Defense.
"I have complete confidence in Abe (Abrams) that he's going to run with this command and take it to new heights, and in doing so, he's going to prepare our Army for probably one of the most difficult missions we have, which is the unknown, the unpredictable," said Odierno.
He's going to help us to continue to develop our most important asset, which is our leaders -- our noncommissioned officers and officers, who will carry this Army forward as we go."
FORSCOM, which prepares conventional forces to provide a sustained flow of trained and ready land power to combatant commanders in defense of the nation at home and abroad, has direct authority over most continental United States-based conventional units of the active Army, and training and readiness oversight of much of the Army Reserve and Army National Guard.
In his remarks, Abrams said that he was excited to be in the U.S. Army Forces Command formation.
"FORSCOM's record over the last 14 years have been of meeting requirements, [and has] been nothing short of heroic and frequently awe-inspiring. Readiness is and remains our number one priority. Everything we do supports building and sustain readiness."
"FORSCOM is by design a 'Total Force' command -- Army National Guard, U.S. Army Reserve, and the Active Component. We are one Army, one Army, working together -- shoulder to shoulder to build and sustain highly trained and disciplined Soldiers and formations in accordance with Army standards -- we are expert in our warfighting skills -- ready to deploy and win in ground combat against any enemy.
As the FORSCOM commanding general, Abrams leads FORSCOM's subordinate units, located across the continental United States, which include five headquarters led by lieutenant generals -- U.S. Army Reserve Command, 1st Army, I Corps, III Corps and XVIII Airborne Corps, and nine division headquarters, led by major generals.

Robert Abrams (born July 4, 1938 in The Bronx, New York City) is an American lawyer and politician.
He graduated from Columbia College and the New York University School of Law. He is considered a member of the reform wing of the Democratic Party.
Abrams was a member of the New York State Assembly representing the Bronx from 1966 to 1969. From 1970 to 1979, he was the Bronx Borough President and an ex officio member of the New York City Board of Estimate.
He was a delegate to the 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984 Democratic National Conventions. In 1988, he was a presidential elector.
Abrams was New York State Attorney General from 1979 to 1993.
In 1992, he sought election to the United States Senate, to challenge Republican Senator Al D'Amato. He won the Democratic Primary, defeating former Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro, Rev. Al Sharpton, and New York City Comptroller Elizabeth Holtzman. The nomination battle was well known for its bitterness, particularly Holtzman and Abrams' attack on Ferraro's questionable associations which Ferraro interpreted as anti-Italian slurs. After Abrams emerged as the nominee, the Democrats remained divided and he was unable to secure Ferraro's endorsement until the last days of the campaign. Abrams was also criticized for calling D'Amato a fascist, and he narrowly lost the general election as a result of these controversies.

Positive thinking tips are likely the last thing you are thinking about when hard times rear their ugly heads in your life. From personal tragedy or a major illness to loss of a job, financial woes, or something else altogether, when you are going through hard times, you feel like life has completely kicked you until you are down on the ground, and the life kicked you again once more for spite. It's easy to look around at friends and neighbors whose lives all seem better and happier than yours and to feel jaded, disillusioned, and even jealous.
It is important to recognize that positive thinking tips can make you feel uplifted and more energized, and this can translate into other aspects of your life as well. It can make those around you feel better, and it can even change your own life path. It is not easy to smile and think positive thoughts when you are going through tough times, but finding the strength and will to think good thoughts can really change your life and help you out of your tough times.

This series provides an opportunity to focus on the significance of having all or a portion of one’s career dedicated to public service and how that public service can positively impact our society’s dynamically changing legal, governmental and social policy.

US Senator Heidi Heitkamp is the first female Senator elected from North Dakota. She took the oath of office on January 3, 2013.
Already in her short time in the Senate, Senator Heitkamp has quickly become a proven Senator who works across the aisle to fight for North Dakotans. Senator Heitkamp has personally shown that if Senators work together, it can lead to real solutions.
As a former director of the one-of-a-kind Dakota Gasification synfuels plant, Senator Heitkamp has a long record of serving as a champion for North Dakota’s energy jobs and industry. She is continuing those efforts in the Senate, working to responsibly harness North Dakota’s energy resources, promoting the state’s all-of-the-above energy plan which she believes should serve as a model for the entire country, and fighting to lift the 40-year old ban on exporting US crude oil.
Senator Heitkamp’s committee assignments have included: Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry; Indian Affairs; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Senator Heitkamp previously served as North Dakota’s Attorney General, battling drug dealers, protecting senior citizens from scams, and working to keep sexual predators off streets and away from kids, even after their prison terms were up. During her time as North Dakota’s Attorney General, Senator Heitkamp brokered an agreement between 46 states and the tobacco industry, which forced the tobacco industry to tell the truth about smoking and health.

Gen. Robert B. Abrams takes charge of FORSCOM as Gen. Mark A. Milley departs to become 39th Army Chief of Staff.
FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Gen. Robert B. Abrams took charge of the Army's largest command, Aug. 10, Monday, as his predecessor, Gen. Mark A. Milley, relinquished the U.S. Army Forces Command colors and departed for duty in Washington, D.C., to become the 39th chief of staff of the Army.
By accepting the colors bearing the distinctive blue, white and red disk that makes up the U.S. Army Forces Command insignia, Abrams became the 22nd commanding general of FORSCOM.
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno noted that Abrams is the fifth commanding general to lead FORSCOM since he's been the Army's chief of staff, "but the good news is they all seem to go on to bigger and better things."
"Mark, you're an incredibly gifted officer … you have the complete confidence of our leadership and I know that many challenges await you in the Pentagon that will require patience, candor, team building, and a thorough knowledge of the joint and organizational environment, the multi-national world that we live in today. Those challenges will require strong, but balanced leadership of character. So I'm incredibly confident of everything I've seen of Mark Milley over the last 20 years that we have the right man for the job," Odierno said.
Abrams' most recent assignment was as the senior military assistant to the Secretary of Defense.
"I have complete confidence in Abe (Abrams) that he's going to run with this command and take it to new heights, and in doing so, he's going to prepare our Army for probably one of the most difficult missions we have, which is the unknown, the unpredictable," said Odierno.
He's going to help us to continue to develop our most important asset, which is our leaders -- our noncommissioned officers and officers, who will carry this Army forward as we go."
FORSCOM, which prepares conventional forces to provide a sustained flow of trained and ready land power to combatant commanders in defense of the nation at home and abroad, has direct authority over most continental United States-based conventional units of the active Army, and training and readiness oversight of much of the Army Reserve and Army National Guard.
In his remarks, Abrams said that he was excited to be in the U.S. Army Forces Command formation.
"FORSCOM's record over the last 14 years have been of meeting requirements, [and has] been nothing short of heroic and frequently awe-inspiring. Readiness is and remains our number one priority. Everything we do supports building and sustain readiness."
"FORSCOM is by design a 'Total Force' command -- Army National Guard, U.S. Army Reserve, and the Active Component. We are one Army, one Army, working together -- shoulder to shoulder to build and sustain highly trained and disciplined Soldiers and formations in accordance with Army standards -- we are expert in our warfighting skills -- ready to deploy and win in ground combat against any enemy.
As the FORSCOM commanding general, Abrams leads FORSCOM's subordinate units, located across the continental United States, which include five headquarters led by lieutenant generals -- U.S. Army Reserve Command, 1st Army, I Corps, III Corps and XVIII Airborne Corps, and nine division headquarters, led by major generals.
