His basketball team, which are mostly African American kids, bonds quickly with Reeves as he becomes more of a friend, as well as a coach, teacher and mentor.
This show based off of Ken Howard's own experiences playing high school basketball as one of the few whites on the team. It should be noted that several of the show's cast members: Thomas Carter (James "Hollywood" Hayward), Timothy Van Patten (Mario "Salami" Pettrino, also son of Dick) and Kevin Hooks (Morris Thorpe) all pursued careers as directors. Carter even directed four episodes of "The White Shadow".
Byron Stewart, who played tall center Warren Coolidge, would reprise his role on another Bruce Paltrow series, the NBC medical drama "St. Elsewhere" from 1984 to 1988.
