Last summer, while in New York City, we had the chance to try the world famous Katz's Deli meat sandwiches; however, given our crunch for time we didn't film the experience. One year later we found ourselves back in New York City with ample time to revisit Katz's and film the behemoth Pastrami and Corned Beef sandwiches. Find out what makes these sandwiches and restaurant a New York City institution.

Katz's Deli: Eating Pastrami and Corned Beef Meat Sandwiches in New York City Food Video Transcript:
Alright, so we are going out for a bit of an unusual breakfast this morning. We are here in the lower east side to have breakfast at Katz's deli. Now they specialize in corned beef and pastrami sandwiches and I am starving. So let's go in there and order some food.
So here is the food we ordered. We ended up getting one corned beef sandwich, one pastrami sandwich and they both came with a whole bunch of pickles. Check it out. Look at those pickles. Wow. This looks fantastic.
Katz's deli has been around since 1888. It is a true institution. And what makes their meat so special is the curing process. Apparently, it takes over 30 days.
Alright, so you're starting with pastrami. Just show us like how much meat is in there. Like that is ridiculous. You will not find a sandwich that thick with meat. Yep, so it is served on rye bread with lots of mustard. And I love pastrami sandwiches so I have high expectations.
Wow. That is so good. The meat is so juicy. It just falls apart the minute you bite in to it. And it is so tender, so flavorful. And it is just perfectly paired with the mustard. That combination is fantastic. One more bite.
Mmmm. Check it out.
Alright, and so I have the other sandwich. The corn beef sandwich. Look at that. Oh, wow. The behemoth.
I'm going to try to eat it without having too much of it falling off.
Struggling there? A little messy.
That was way too big of a bite. But oh my. That meat is as tender as it gets. And I like that they keep a little bit of the fat on it. It is really juicy and it has got a bit of a greasy feel as you are chewing it. So so good.
And let's not forget the pickles. Yeah, for this type of sandwich you can not have it without pickles. Like it is also the perfect pairing. You've got to have your mustard and you've got to have your pickles.
That's nice.
So out of the two sandwiches which one do you like the most? My favorite is definitely the pastrami. This one that I'm holding here. I just find that the meat is a lot more tender. It is just a lot easier to eat.
Um, and the flavor. Yeah, I don't know what it is but this one is pretty special. So if you come to Katz's I highly highly recommend the pastrami sandwich. It's great.
So again there is a Montreal New York connection. While in Montreal you can go to a place called Schwartz's which specializes in Canadian smoked meat sandwiches. Which is similar to the pastrami one. There is a bit of a difference. It is hard to say which one I like better. I love them both to be honest and if you can try them both. If you are in Montreal and in New York I highly recommend you do that.
Alright, so the price. How much did these sandwiches cost? Well, they are not cheap because this place is really famous. They each come in at just under $20. But at the same time they are quite filling. Like I'm still struggling to finish my first piece. Like this is going to be more of a brunch than a breakfast. Yeah. Yeah, so bring your appetite when you come here and yeah bring your wallet as well.

Matt Basile, the undisputed cooking champion of the Fidel Gastro team travels to the world famous New York City to try out some of the most well known, and some would say best ever, local dishes.
The first stop on his traveling adventure was Midtown Manhattan, also known simply as Midtown. Midtown is comprised of the entire central lengthwise portion of the borough as well as the island of Manhattan in New York City. Midtown is home to the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and also happens to be the headquarters of the United Nations. It also contains the Times Square and the Rockefeller Center. Midtown Manhattan separates Lower Manhattan from Upper Manhattan. Matt chose to stop here specifically for the diversity in food with the added bonus of getting a closer look at the busting central hub of New York City.
Matt chose to try out the well-known local soup dumpling restaurant Joe's Shanghai. The first Joe's Shanghai was actually founded in Flushing, New York in 1995. Their two main dishes, crab and pork dumpling soup, became a New York favorite in no time at all and soon they opened up two more locations. Over the years they have been named as Best Restaurant by New York Times Restaurant Guide, Travel and Leisure, New York Magazine, Gourmet Magazine, and a Zagat Survey. They have also been featured on the Japanese Fuji TV show and in multiple gourmet magazines circulating in the country. Needless to say he certainly wasn't disappointed.
His next stop was Katz's Delicatessen on the Lower East Side of the city. In 1888 a small deli going by the name of "Iceland Brothers" was established on Ludlow Street. In 1903 Willy Katz took a stake in the business and the name was officially changed to "Iceland & Katz". Willy’s cousin Benny came on-board in 1910 and bought out the Iceland brothers to officially form what is known today as Katz’s Delicatessen. Katz’s Deli was moved across the street during the construction of the much needed subway system and has remained there ever since. Matt sampled several dishes at Katz's and if the video is any indicator of the outstanding flavor of the food he had there it must have been to die for. There are few, if any, delicatessens on the entire East Coast that can hold a candle to Katz's making it an absolute must on Matt's trip.
Moving on to his next extravagantly delicious meal Matt made a visit to Ferrera. Ferrara has been open for 120 years and has been handed down through the family for 5 generations. Ferrera's roots run deep. It was originally created to fill a void that existed in the 1890's. There was no place that an opera lover, after a night of Verdi or Puccini, could relax and drink a cup or two of espresso. This situation was remedied when Enrico Scoppa and Antonio Ferrara, an opera impresario and well-known showman, opened a cafe called Café A. Ferrara. This cafe has changed with the times but at it's core remains true to the original ideas of Enrico Scoppa and Antonio Ferrara and is a tribute to the hard work and dedication they put into making Ferrara what it is today. Matt ate his fill of various mouth watering dessert items as well as consuming what appears to be several apertifs and it is safe to say he certainly did not walk away disappointed.
New York city has a long and storied history. It has seen great success and great tragedy but one thing about the city has remained constant. You can't hold back progress in New York City, there is a good reason there are so many I ♥ NYC shirts in circulation today. It is the gem of the East Coast and a shining example of what Americans can accomplish when they work together as a team regardless of the hardships they face.

After a long 36 hours of pretty much zero sleep, myself and Rochelle arrived in New York JFK airport and met up with our travelling friends Hazel and Chris for 4 nights in the city. Soon as we got to our apartment we headed out to Katz's Deli and then onto a bar called 'Leave Rochelle Out Of It'.

New York City is often referred to as the greatest city in the world and we can see why. Just the energy alone is magnetic. But before you consider yourself an NYC expert, check out these 13 things you should not do in the Big Apple.
1. Don't buy a Sandwich from Subway
NYC offers some of the best fresh delicatessens in the world like the Carnegie Deli, Artie’s Delicatessen and 2nd Avenue Deli on 33rd street. But avoid Katz’s as it has turned into a huge tourist trap.
2. Don't Get into an Empty Subway Car
There’s a reason that it’s empty. Either the A/C isn’t working or there’s spilled bodily fluid or something is up. Trust us!
3. Don't Stop on the Sidewalk
Do not be that tourist that stops in the middle of the sidewalk to look at a map or to take a photo. New Yorkers are speed-walking pros so don’t impede the flow.
4. Don't Make Small Talk
New Yorkers are not necessarily known for their calm, patient, friendly demeanor, so don't expect to spark up idle chit chat on the street. They're usually happy to give directions but only to prove how well they know the city.
5. Don't Eat at a Chain Restaurant
Locals avoid Times Square like the plague as it is a tourist trap with lots of chain restaurants and visitors wearing “I LOVE NY” t-shirts (oh, yeah avoid this too). Patronize the myriad of local restaurants to really experience the authentic flavors of the city.
6. Don't Avoid the Outer Boroughs
Manhattan is usually what most people think of when they visit New York, but there are four other boroughs to explore too. Take the subway to Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn or Staten Island and discover the unique charm of greater New York City.
7. Don't Pay for a Statue of Liberty Tour
Avoid this outrageously priced tour and take the Staten Island ferry instead. The 50 minute round-trip ride passes most of the same sights and is completely free of charge.
8. Don't Skip a Museum Because of the Entry Fee
The entry fee that you see for most of New York's world renowned museums is just a suggested amount. You actually only have to pay what you can afford.
9. Don't Use an ATM Inside of a Store
Some store owners that don’t accept credit cards but provide a convenient ATM inside their shops. However, it's a trap! These machines often charge an excessive withdrawal fee!
10. Don't Assume It’s Safe to Cross the Street
Many tourists wander across the street because they see groups of other people doing so. Fast-walking New Yorkers will make it safely to the other side because they have the well-honed instincts of a local. You, however, do not. Wait for the pedestrian light if you value your life.
11. Don't Tell the Cab Driver Where You’re Going Before Getting In
This way the picky driver won't be able to tell you they’re not going that far. Hail the cab, hop in and then explain where you’d like to go. Use the subway or walk as much as possible, because taxis will most likely end up stuck in gridlock traffic.
12. Don't Be a Scam Victim
Don’t buy blank CD's from aspiring young rappers or be fooled by the man dressed in a suit asking for bus fare. Avoid playing card games on the street and watch your wallet in large crowds. New York is full of scam artists, so keep your guard up.
13. Avoid the High Line on Weekends
This public park built atop an old elevated railway on Manhattan's West Side is definitely worth strolling, but avoid the weekends when it's a wall-to-wall tourist-clogged conveyor belt.

Katz's Delicatessen, also known as Katz's of New York City, is a kosher style (not kosher) delicatessen restaurant located at 205 Houston Street, on the southwest corner of Houston and Ludlow Streets on the Lower East Side in Manhattan, New York City.
Since its founding in 1888, it has become popular among locals and tourists alike for its pastrami sandwiches and hot dogs, both of which are widely considered among New York's best. Each week, Katz's serves 10,000 pounds (4,500 kg) of pastrami, 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) of corned beef, 2,000 pounds (910 kg) of salami and 12,000 hot dogs.
In 2013, Zagats gave Katz's a food rating of 25, and ranked it as the number two deli in New York City, after Mile End in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn.
History
In 1888, the Iceland brothers established what is now known as Katz’s Delicatessen on Ludlow Street in New York’s Lower East Side. Upon the arrival of Willy Katz in 1903, the establishment's was changed from Iceland Brothers to Iceland & Katz. Willy’s cousin Benny joined him in 1910, buying out the Iceland brothers to officially form Katz’s delicatessen. Their landsman Harry Tarowsky bought into the partnership in April 1917.

Don't Eat at a Chain Restaurant Locals avoid Times Square like the plague as it is a tourist trap with lots of chain restaurants and visitors wearing “I LOVE NY” t-shirts (oh, yeah avoid this too). Patronize the myriad of local restaurants to really experience the authentic flavors of the city. 6. Don't Avoid the Outer Boroughs Manhattan is usually what most people think of when they visit New York, but there are four other boroughs to explore too. Take the subway to Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn or Staten Island and discover the unique charm of greater New York City. 7. Don't Pay for a Statue of Liberty Tour Avoid this outrageously priced tour and take the Staten Island ferry instead. The 50 minute round-trip ride passes most of the same sights and is completely free of charge. 8. Don't Skip a Museum Because of the Entry Fee The entry fee that you see for most of New York's world renowned museums is just a suggested amount. You actually only have to pay what you can afford. 9. Don't Use an ATM Inside of a Store Some store owners that don’t accept credit cards but provide a convenient ATM inside their shops. However, it's a trap! These machines often charge an excessive withdrawal fee! 10. Don't Assume It’s Safe to Cross the Street Many tourists wander across the street because they see groups of other people doing so. Fast-walking New Yorkers will make it safely to the other side because they have the well-honed instincts of a local. You, however, do not. Wait for the pedestrian light if you value your life. 11. Don't Tell the Cab Driver Where You’re Going Before Getting In This way the picky driver won't be able to tell you they’re not going that far. Hail the cab, hop in and then explain where you’d like to go. Use the subway or walk as much as possible, because taxis will most likely end up stuck in gridlock traffic. 12. Don't Be a Scam Victim Don’t buy blank CD's from aspiring young rappers or be fooled by the man dressed in a suit asking for bus fare. Avoid playing card games on the street and watch your wallet in large crowds. New York is full of scam artists, so keep your guard up. 13. Avoid the High Line on Weekends This public park built atop an old elevated railway on Manhattan's West Side is definitely worth strolling, but avoid the weekends when it's a wall-to-wall tourist-clogged conveyor belt. Alright, so we are going out for a bit of an unusual breakfast this morning. We are here in the lower east side to have breakfast at Katz's deli. Now they specialize in corned beef and pastrami sandwiches and I am starving. So let's go in there and order some food.
So here is the food we ordered. We ended up getting one corned beef sandwich, one pastrami sandwich and they both came with a whole bunch of pickles. Check it out. Look at those pickles. Wow. This looks fantastic.
Katz's deli has been around since 1888. It is a true institution. And what makes their meat so special is the curing process. Apparently, it takes over 30 days.
Alright, so you're starting with pastrami. Just show us like how much meat is in there. Like that is ridiculous. You will not find a sandwich that thick with meat. Yep, so it is served on rye bread with lots of mustard. And I love pastrami sandwiches so I have high expectations.
Wow. That is so good. The meat is so juicy. It just falls apart the minute you bite in to it. And it is so tender, so flavorful. And it is just perfectly paired with the mustard. That combination is fantastic. One more bite.
Mmmm. Check it out.
Alright, and so I have the other sandwich. The corn beef sandwich. Look at that. Oh, wow. The behemoth.
I'm going to try to eat it without having too much of it falling off.
Struggling there? A little messy.
That was way too big of a bite. But oh my. That meat is as tender as it gets. And I like that they keep a little bit of the fat on it. It is really juicy and it has got a bit of a greasy feel as you are chewing it. So so good.
And let's not forget the pickles. Yeah, for this type of sandwich you can not have it without pickles. Like it is also the perfect pairing. You've got to have your mustard and you've got to have your pickles.
That's nice.
So out of the two sandwiches which one do you like the most? My favorite is definitely the pastrami. This one that I'm holding here. I just find that the meat is a lot more tender. It is just a lot easier to eat.
Um, and the flavor. Yeah, I don't know what it is but this one is pretty special. So if you come to Katz's I highly highly recommend the pastrami sandwich. It's great.
So again there is a Montreal New York connection. While in Montreal you can go to a place called Schwartz's which specializes in Canadian smoked meat sandwiches. Which is similar to the pastrami one. There is a bit of a difference. It is hard to say which one I like better. I love them both to be honest and if you can try them both. If you are in Montreal and in New York I highly recommend you do that.
Alright, so the price. How much did these sandwiches cost? Well, they are not cheap because this place is really famous. They each come in at just under $20. But at the same time they are quite filling. Like I'm still struggling to finish my first piece. Like this is going to be more of a brunch than a breakfast. Yeah. Yeah, so bring your appetite when you come here and yeah bring your wallet as well.

Matt Basile, the undisputed cooking champion of the Fidel Gastro team travels to the world famous New York City to try out some of the most well known, and some would say best ever, local dishes.
The first stop on his traveling adventure was Midtown Manhattan, also known simply as Midtown. Midtown is home to the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and also happens to be the headquarters of the United Nations. It also contains the Times Square and the Rockefeller Center. Matt chose to stop here specifically for the diversity in food with the added bonus of getting a closer look at the busting central hub of New York City.
Matt chose to try out the well-known local soup dumpling restaurant Joe's Shanghai. The first Joe's Shanghai was actually founded in Flushing, New York in 1995. Their two main dishes, crab and pork dumpling soup, became a New York favorite in no time at all and soon they opened up two more locations. Over the years they have been named as Best Restaurant by New York Times Restaurant Guide, Travel and Leisure, New York Magazine, Gourmet Magazine, and a Zagat Survey. They have also been featured on the Japanese Fuji TV show and in multiple gourmet magazines circulating in the country. Needless to say he certainly wasn't disappointed.
His next stop was Katz's Delicatessen on the Lower East Side of the city. In 1888 a small deli going by the name of "Iceland Brothers" was established on Ludlow Street. In 1903 Willy Katz took a stake in the business and the name was officially changed to "Iceland & Katz". Willy’s cousin Benny came on-board in 1910 and bought out the Iceland brothers to officially form what is known today as Katz’s Delicatessen. Katz’s Deli was moved across the street during the construction of the much needed subway system and has remained there ever since. Matt sampled several dishes at Katz's and if the video is any indicator of the outstanding flavor of the food he had there it must have been to die for. There are few, if any, delicatessens on the entire East Coast that can hold a candle to Katz's making it an absolute must on Matt's trip.
Moving on to his next extravagantly delicious meal Matt made a visit to Ferrera. Ferrara has been open for 120 years and has been handed down through the family for 5 generations. Ferrera's roots run deep. It was originally created to fill a void that existed in the 1890's. There was no place that an opera lover, after a night of Verdi or Puccini, could relax and drink a cup or two of espresso. This situation was remedied when Enrico Scoppa and Antonio Ferrara, an opera impresario and well-known showman, opened a cafe called Café A. Ferrara. This cafe has changed with the times but at it's core remains true to the original ideas of Enrico Scoppa and Antonio Ferrara and is a tribute to the hard work and dedication they put into making Ferrara what it is today. Matt ate his fill of various mouth watering dessert items as well as consuming what appears to be several apertifs and it is safe to say he certainly did not walk away disappointed.
New York city has a long and storied history. It has seen great success and great tragedy but one thing about the city has remained constant. You can't hold back progress in New York City, there is a good reason there are so many I ♥ NYC shirts in circulation today. It is the gem of the East Coast and a shining example of what Americans can accomplish when they work together as a team regardless of the hardships they face.

Matt Basile, the undisputed cooking champion of the Fidel Gastro team travels to the world famous New York City to try out some of the most well known, and some would say best ever, local dishes.
The first stop on his traveling adventure was Midtown Manhattan, also known simply as Midtown. Midtown is comprised of the entire central lengthwise portion of the borough as well as the island of Manhattan in New York City. Midtown is home to the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and also happens to be the headquarters of the United Nations. It also contains the Times Square and the Rockefeller Center. Midtown Manhattan separates Lower Manhattan from Upper Manhattan. Matt chose to stop here specifically for the diversity in food with the added bonus of getting a closer look at the busting central hub of New York City.
Matt chose to try out the well-known local soup dumpling restaurant Joe's Shanghai. The first Joe's Shanghai was actually founded in Flushing, New York in 1995. Their two main dishes, crab and pork dumpling soup, became a New York favorite in no time at all and soon they opened up two more locations. Over the years they have been named as Best Restaurant by New York Times Restaurant Guide, Travel and Leisure, New York Magazine, Gourmet Magazine, and a Zagat Survey. They have also been featured on the Japanese Fuji TV show and in multiple gourmet magazines circulating in the country. Needless to say he certainly wasn't disappointed.

1. Don't buy a Sandwich from Subway
NYC offers some of the best fresh delicatessens in the world like the Carnegie Deli, Artie’s Delicatessen and 2nd Avenue Deli on 33rd street. But avoid Katz’s as it has turned into a huge tourist trap.
2. Don't Get into an Empty Subway Car
There’s a reason that it’s empty. Either the A/C isn’t working or there’s spilled bodily fluid or something is up. Trust us!
3. Don't Stop on the Sidewalk
Do not be that tourist that stops in the middle of the sidewalk to look at a map or to take a photo. New Yorkers are speed-walking pros so don’t impede the flow.
4. Don't Make Small Talk
New Yorkers are not necessarily known for their calm, patient, friendly demeanor, so don't expect to spark up idle chit chat on the street. They're usually happy to give directions but only to prove how well they know the city.
5. Don't Eat at a Chain Restaurant
Locals avoid Times Square like the plague as it is a tourist trap with lots of chain restaurants and visitors wearing “I LOVE NY” t-shirts (oh, yeah avoid this too). Patronize the myriad of local restaurants to really experience the authentic flavors of the city.
6. Don't Avoid the Outer Boroughs
Manhattan is usually what most people think of when they visit New York, but there are four other boroughs to explore too. Take the subway to Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn or Staten Island and discover the unique charm of greater New York City.
7. Don't Pay for a Statue of Liberty Tour
Avoid this outrageously priced tour and take the Staten Island ferry instead. The 50 minute round-trip ride passes most of the same sights and is completely free of charge.
8. Don't Skip a Museum Because of the Entry Fee
The entry fee that you see for most of New York's world renowned museums is just a suggested amount. You actually only have to pay what you can afford.
9. Don't Use an ATM Inside of a Store
Some store owners that don’t accept credit cards but provide a convenient ATM inside their shops. However, it's a trap! These machines often charge an excessive withdrawal fee!
10. Don't Assume It’s Safe to Cross the Street
Many tourists wander across the street because they see groups of other people doing so. Fast-walking New Yorkers will make it safely to the other side because they have the well-honed instincts of a local. You, however, do not. Wait for the pedestrian light if you value your life.
11. Don't Tell the Cab Driver Where You’re Going Before Getting In
This way the picky driver won't be able to tell you they’re not going that far. Hail the cab, hop in and then explain where you’d like to go. Use the subway or walk as much as possible, because taxis will most likely end up stuck in gridlock traffic.
12. Don't Be a Scam Victim
Don’t buy blank CD's from aspiring young rappers or be fooled by the man dressed in a suit asking for bus fare. Avoid playing card games on the street and watch your wallet in large crowds. New York is full of scam artists, so keep your guard up.
13. Avoid the High Line on Weekends
This public park built atop an old elevated railway on Manhattan's West Side is definitely worth strolling, but avoid the weekends when it's a wall-to-wall tourist-clogged conveyor belt.
