Improvisation: Prelude and Fugue in the style of Mendelssohn - David Briggs at Ulm Cathedral
Improvisation: Prelude and Fugue in the style of Mendelssohn (6th August 2022) - David Briggs at Ulm Cathedral, Germany (Walcker Organ, 1969).
Late in the evening of Saturday 6th August 2022, I had the inestimable privilege of a lock-in at Ulm Cathedral, Germany - a curious mélange of fathoming out keys, heavy, creaky doors and long corridors, dusty fuse boxes and spiral staircases. Being in the cathedral alone was certainly another one of those unforgettable ‘before-and-after’ moments. Outside, towering over the west end of the cathedral, the stunningly-floodlit spire (medieval but massively enlarged in the C19th) retains its claim to be the highest in the world. The darkened interior of the building was awe-inspiring and humbling in equal measure. There was a curious dichotomy between t...

🎵 David Briggs Improvising a FUGUE at Saint-Sulpice, Paris
This was an experience that I'll never forget!
This recording was made by me on the 29th May 2011 at the end of a Sunday morning Mass. During this particular service, David improvised three items: an Offertoire, this Fugue during the communion and then a Sortie after the service. I have all three in my library!
The service before this saw the premiere of David's 'Messe pour Saint-Sulpice' for which I played one of the organ parts with David Bednall playing the other.
It was an experience that I'll never forget, and I'm so thankful that I was there to experience it in reality.

Fantasia and Fugue on B-A-C-H - Franz Liszt (1811-1886) - David Briggs on the 2011 Rieger Organ at the Michaeliskirche, Munich.
Last month I had the wonderful experience of performing again on the stunning Rieger organ in the Michaeliskirche, in the centre of Munich. This instrument was the last to be voiced by the former head voicer of Rieger, Mr Michel Garnier. As you will hear, even as recorded on an iPhone, it’s pretty staggering.
The Fantasia and Fugue on B-A-C-H was written for the opening of the 1855 Friedrich Ladegast instrument at the Cathedral of Merseburg, not so far from Leipzig. The first concert I gave after the pandemic was on this instrument - in July 2021 with a masked audience of 19 very apprehensive people! Adagietto from Symphony No 5 - Gustav Mahler (1901), transcribed and played by David Briggs, on the Rieger organ of the Stephansdom, Vienna (7th May 2022).
What a completely exhilarating experience, to perform Mr Mahler’s amazing music, in the city which was his home from 1897-1907, before he came to NYC. Here is the famous Adagietto, from the Fifth Symphony, almost certainly composed as a wedding present for Alma in 1901, in a transcription I made in Gloucester back in 1997. 🎵 SORTIE Improvisation at Saint-Sulpice by DAVID BRIGGS
An improvised Sortie on the Cavaille-Coll organ of Saint-Sulpice in Paris after Mass on 29th May.
The morning I recorded this video was a life-changing moment for me.
I had the opportunity to play the Orgue de Choeur for Mass at Saint Sulpice, and David Briggs was invited by Daniel Roth to improvise at various points in the proceeding service (they have multiple services on Sundays, unsurprisingly).
I managed to capture an improvised Fugue (available here https://youtu.be/GliR5f2jIc4), an Offertoire and this Sortie.
WHAT an experience!

There was a curious dichotomy between the intense but narrow beam of my diminutive iPhone torch and the colossal nature of the building itself, much of which was invisible, like venturing into some sort of cosmic abyss. But I’ll never forget how inviting the whole space felt - with so many hundreds of thousands of prayers offered, over countless centuries. The organ, high up at the west end, is a neo-classical Walcker instrument from 1969, with more mixtures (mainly very high) and mutations (mainly acidic) than any other instrument I’ve come across. My 45 minute recital, the following lunchtime, was to comprise a selection of improvisations in styles from Medieval to C21st. This was the perfect instrument for such a sonic journey, with its enormous tonal palette, clunky and rather business-like mechanical action and unashamedly neo-classical personality. I improvised a Prelude and Fugue in the style of Felix Mendelssohn and the current recording is the dry run, starting off with the combined 8ft's of all five manuals, with a gradual crescendo in the Fugue, to a plenum with Cornets and Reeds, but no mixtures. I hope you’ll enjoy it.
The recording was made just using my iPhone 13 in the organ tribune, so you’re unaware of the marvelous 7-second resonance of the building itself, apart from after the very last chord. I’m very grateful to Professor Friedemann Johannes Wieland (Kantor and Organist of Ulm Cathedral) for his permission to post this recording on FB and YouTube.
But it was illuminating to spend twelve hours getting to know the organ quite intimately, in the 3 days before the concert. The young, intrepid Ladegast started from scratch, in an old case. The instrument was restored to the original condition about twenty years ago from Hermann Eule Orgelbau and playing it is a real education. There are huge numbers of 16 and 8ft foundations, all with different color but also a unique and complete sense of blend. There are very few reeds (half of them a ‘free’ reeds) and nothing screams. All the registration has to be done by hand, although there are three levers whereby you can preset Pedal combinations (p-mf-f). I was improvising a silent movie accompaniment to Nosferatu so was able to explore every nuck and cranny. The coupling is mechanical and it made me think that, when the Liszt B-A-C-H was new, the dedicatee Alexander Winterburger must have either played largely uncoupled or not too fast - or probably both. It’s a curious twist of fate, when you consider that Liszt was described as the greatest pianist who had ever lived, clearly with a transcendental technique.
With the modern action at the Michaeliskircke, things are certainly not unduly heavy and of course there are thousands of combinations so you can play the whole piece without touching a single stop knob, if you are so inclined. I enjoyed the freedom of taking a middle approach, using just 10 generals and a lot of hand registration. The headphones are linked to the outstanding sound system in the church, whereby you can hear the sound of the instrument half way down the nave, in very good quality. It’s salutary, the way it changes the way you play. It was also 54f (just 12 degrees C) - hence the bundling up! The way this church was completely rebuilt in the 1950’s is totally inspirational, after the RAF almost totally destroyed it (apart from the side walls and west end) in 1944. Truly a phoenix rising out of the ashes...
I hope you will feel nourished by this amazing sound!

Making money is not my primary objective. After expenses are taken into consideration, remaining revenue is invested back into BEAUTY IN SOUND. Audio and visual equipment is expensive, and I also pay a fair fee to all recitalists who appear on BIS. This is why I regularly ask YOU to help, and I’m sorry for having to do so. I hope that you can all see the tangible improvements being made to BIS along our shared journey.
Ways to help and support BEAUTY IN SOUND:
Join the channel for fun and funky emojis in the Live Chat:

Becoming a Patron allows you access to an exclusive club with additional content and many perks! It is a very friendly and close community, currently consisting of over 330 people.

PayPal is preferred for larger donations (another over £100) because they take a smaller cut of your contribution than YouTube do:
