The baby is the seventh child and seventh son born to Tui and Epenesa Tamate.

Mrs Tamate, 42 said the baby was due to arrive on Saturday, July 26th, but instead came without any warning in the early hours of Friday morning.

"When I feel baby come out, I lie down in front of the toilet, one push and the baby comes out," she said.

She said she then screamed to her husband that she needed an ambulance. She wasn't sure at the time which of her boys made the call.

She then asked for a blanket to wrap the baby and saw the police.

Mrs Tamate said she removed the umbilical cord which was wrapped around the baby's neck.

"Police say 'is baby OK? Are you OK? Why are you shaking? Just lie down,'" she said.

"I told them, 'I am very cold.'"

Mrs Tamate said she was very proud of her son for calling for help.

She said her husband couldn't call the emergency services as he didn't speak much English.

Mother and baby were doing well in the Northern Hospital on Friday, the police spokesman said.
