Under the orders of a charismatic and delusional leader they forced to make Europe a better place, establish imposing elitism, bringing a romantic revival against the Judeo-Christian modern realm of morality and conscience. The world was on war, and Waffen SS were the ultimate killing machines of the German militaristic empire, almost like Teutonic Knights in the Middle Ages. Assuredly destroyed enemies, murdered civilians and burnt villages, fighting in excruciating conditions to death, until they lost the battle. That's the nature of the war. They were proud gladiators, not visionary poets... After the World War II and even nowadays the Nazi soldiers became scapegoats for the crappy average capitalistic human being. I hate when people don't know anything about anything, yet seem to have opinions about everything (as Boyd R. said) or dreaming of a world without odds and wars. I do believe in hate as where as I believe in love. Therefore peace has no meaning without the shade of war. Heraclitus was not an idiot, and Buddha never thought about possible threats from alien races in the ulterior humanoid future! Just saying. Nazis will always be a harsh but fascinating and charming chapter of History for every restless spirit.

The Waffen-SS was created as the armed wing of the Nazi Party's Schutzstaffel ("Protective Squadron"), and gradually developed into a multi-ethnic and multi-national military force of Nazi Germany.
The Waffen-SS grew from three regiments to over 38 divisions during World War II, and served alongside the Heer (regular army) but was never formally part of it. Adolf Hitler resisted integrating the Waffen-SS into the army, as it was to remain the armed wing of the Party and to become an elite police force once the war was won. Prior to the war it was under the control of the SS Führungshauptamt (SS operational command office) beneath Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler. Upon mobilization its tactical control was given to the High Command of the Armed Forces (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht).
Initially membership was open to "Aryans" only in accordance with the racial policies of the Nazi state, but the rules were partially relaxed in 1940, although Jews and Poles remained banned; and Hitler authorized the formation of units composed largely or solely of foreign volunteers and conscripts. By the end of the war, non-Germans made up approximately 60 percent of the Waffen-SS.
At the post-war Nuremberg Trials the Waffen-SS was condemned as a criminal organization due to its essential connection to the Nazi Party and involvement in war crimes. Waffen-SS veterans were denied many of the rights afforded to veterans who had served in the Heer (army), Luftwaffe (air force) or Kriegsmarine (navy). An exception was made for Waffen-SS conscripts sworn in after 1943, who were exempted because of their involuntary servitude.

The Schutzstaffel (SS; also stylized as

At the post-war Nuremberg Trials the Waffen-SS was condemned as a criminal organization due to its essential connection to the Nazi Party and involvement in war crimes. Waffen-SS veterans were denied many of the rights afforded to veterans who had served in the Heer (army), Luftwaffe (air force) or Kriegsmarine (navy). An exception was made for Waffen-SS conscripts sworn in after 1943, who were exempted because of their involuntary servitude.

The lyrics changed as the war went on. Originally they referred to the shores of the river Volga in Russia, later to those of the river Oder on the German-Polish border, where heavy fighting took place in 1945. The lyrics openly declared that the SS would destroy the "Red plague".

As the Waffen SS gradually developed into a multi-ethnic and multi-national force, translated and modified versions were sung by SS men from other countries. Among these were a French version, used by SS Division Charlemagne, a Norwegian version called "På Vikingtog", and an Estonian version used by members of the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking and later 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS called "Pataljon Narwa Laul" ("The Song of Battalion Narwa"). It was also the marching song for the 19th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (2nd Latvian).
