UPPSALA, SWEDEN — About 8 million tonnes of plastic are leaked into the ocean annually, and its impact on the fragile underwater ecosystem has scientists worried.
The BBC reports that a new study from Sweden’s Uppsala University has found that young fish are eating microplastic like junk food — and it’s killing them.
Microplastic particles result from the fragmentation of large plastic waste, or from tiny manufactured plastic, such as microbeads in cosmetic products. Measuring less than 5 millimeters across, the particles flow through waterways and into the ocean, accumulating in shallow coastal areas.
Larval perch that normally feed on plankton have been found to be actively choosing the microplastic as food. This has resulted in their stunted growth and sudden disregard for the smell of predators. The ability to respond to the smell of predators and flee is typically innate in young fish.
When placed in tanks with their natural predator, perch that ate plastic were preyed upon four times faster than those that did not. All were dead within 48 hours, reports the Deccan Chronicle.
Scientists warn that the harmful effects of plastic is not limited to fish, and may be felt throughout the food chain.
The study, published in the journal ‘Science’, is an important step in understanding the silent threat that plastic wastes poses on marine creatures.
According to Chemistry World, the U.S. has already put a ban on the production of microbeads in personal care products, effective July 2017. Pressure is building for other countries, especially in Europe, to follow suit.

Many times, the results are subtle and you can’t even tell the difference, but other times, the procedures are so noticeable they make us cringe. Despite blatant augmentation, lip fillers, and liposuction, many celebrities aren’t comfortable with coming clean about the procedures they have undergone. So when a celebrity is actually upfront and honest about the work that they’ve done, like the 10 stars on our list, we applaud them!
The Kardashian family is famous for their reality television shows, their impeccable sense of style, and the plastic surgery they have received over the years. While Kim and Khloe have stayed mum on the majority of their procedures, their sisters Kourtney and Kylie Jenner, as well as their mom Kris, have been upfront about their enhancements. Kourtney’s proud of her aug-mented breast, Kylie’s face completely transformed once she received lip fillers, and Kris has admitted to botox, fillers, a boob job, a breast lift, laser resurfacing, and a face lift. Since their popularity is largely based on their appearance, we can’t blame them for going under the knife to ensure they always look Hollywood glam.
When plastic surgery procedures are subtle, many fans may not even notice that their favorite star has gone under the knife. Jennifer Aniston reportedly had a nose job done in her teenage years to fix a deviated septum, but as of today, fans of the actress can’t even tell the difference! Betty White is another actress who had a subtle eye lift in the ‘70s to combat the signs of aging. The procedure really helped to refresh and brighten up her face.
On the other end of the spectrum, some celebrities go way too far on their quest to having a flaw-less face and body. Their pursuit of perfection leads them to obtain multiple plastic surgery pro-cedures and the results aren’t always beautiful.
For example, Heidi Montag of The Hills underwent 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day. She went from wholesome to Playboy bunny after receiving liposuction, a breast and butt aug-mentation and a chin reduction. Her family was just as shocked as the rest of the world when Heidi unveiled her new body on an episode of 20/20.
Whether you agree or disagree with plastic surgery, you can’t fault many of these celebs who choose to go under the knife. Living their lives in the limelight takes its toll, and constant scruti-ny from the public can really do a number on their self-esteem. If going under the knife is their answer to feeling better about themselves then more power to them! And for those celebrities who actually own up to the procedures they have undergone, we can’t help but give them props!

They are usually synthetic, most commonly derived from petrochemicals, but many are partially natural.Plasticity is the general property of all materials that are able to irreversibly deform without breaking, but this occurs to such a degree with this class of moldable polymers that their name is an emphasis on this ability.
Due to their relatively low cost, ease of manufacture, versatility, and imperviousness to water, plastics are used in an enormous and expanding range of products, from paper clips to spaceships. They have already displaced many traditional materials, such as wood, stone, horn and bone, leather, paper, metal, glass, and ceramic, in most of their former uses. In developed countries, about a third of plastic is used in packaging and another third in buildings such as piping used in plumbing or vinyl siding. Other uses include automobiles (up to 20% plastic), furniture, and toys. In the developing world, the ratios may be different - for example, reportedly 42% of India's consumption is used in packaging. The Kardashian family is famous for their reality television shows, their impeccable sense of style, and the plastic surgery they have received over the years. While Kim and Khloe have stayed mum on the majority of their procedures, their sisters Kourtney and Kylie Jenner, as well as their mom Kris, have been upfront about their enhancements. Kourtney’s proud of her aug-mented breast, Kylie’s face completely transformed once she received lip fillers, and Kris has admitted to botox, fillers, a boob job, a breast lift, laser resurfacing, and a face lift. Since their popularity is largely based on their appearance, we can’t blame them for going under the knife to ensure they always look Hollywood glam. When plastic surgery procedures are subtle, many fans may not even notice that their favorite star has gone under the knife. Jennifer Aniston reportedly had a nose job done in her teenage years to fix a deviated septum, but as of today, fans of the actress can’t even tell the difference! Betty White is another actress who had a subtle eye lift in the ‘70s to combat the signs of aging. The procedure really helped to refresh and brighten up her face. On the other end of the spectrum, some celebrities go way too far on their quest to having a flaw-less face and body. Their pursuit of perfection leads them to obtain multiple plastic surgery pro-cedures and the results aren’t always beautiful. For example, Heidi Montag of The Hills underwent 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day. She went from wholesome to Playboy bunny after receiving liposuction, a breast and butt aug-mentation and a chin reduction. The BBC reports that a new study from Sweden’s Uppsala University has found that young fish are eating microplastic like junk food — and it’s killing them. Microplastic particles result from the fragmentation of large plastic waste, or from tiny manufactured plastic, such as microbeads in cosmetic products. Measuring less than 5 millimeters across, the particles flow through waterways and into the ocean, accumulating in shallow coastal areas. UPPSALA, SWEDEN — About 8 million tonnes of plastic are leaked into the ocean annually, and its impact on the fragile underwater ecosystem has scientists worried.
The BBC reports that a new study from Sweden’s Uppsala University has found that young fish are eating microplastic like junk food — and it’s killing them.
Microplastic particles result from the fragmentation of large plastic waste, or from tiny manufactured plastic, such as microbeads in cosmetic products. Measuring less than 5 millimeters across, the particles flow through waterways and into the ocean, accumulating in shallow coastal areas.
Larval perch that normally feed on plankton have been found to be actively choosing the microplastic as food. This has resulted in their stunted growth and sudden disregard for the smell of predators. The ability to respond to the smell of predators and flee is typically innate in young fish.
When placed in tanks with their natural predator, perch that ate plastic were preyed upon four times faster than those that did not. All were dead within 48 hours, reports the Deccan Chronicle.
Scientists warn that the harmful effects of plastic is not limited to fish, and may be felt throughout the food chain.
The study, published in the journal ‘Science’, is an important step in understanding the silent threat that plastic wastes poses on marine creatures.
According to Chemistry World, the U.S. has already put a ban on the production of microbeads in personal care products, effective July 2017. Pressure is building for other countries, especially in Europe, to follow suit.

The Kardashian family is famous for their reality television shows, their impeccable sense of style, and the plastic surgery they have received over the years. While Kim and Khloe have stayed mum on the majority of their procedures, their sisters Kourtney and Kylie Jenner, as well as their mom Kris, have been upfront about their enhancements. Kourtney’s proud of her aug-mented breast, Kylie’s face completely transformed once she received lip fillers, and Kris has admitted to botox, fillers, a boob job, a breast lift, laser resurfacing, and a face lift. Since their popularity is largely based on their appearance, we can’t blame them for going under the knife to ensure they always look Hollywood glam.
When plastic surgery procedures are subtle, many fans may not even notice that their favorite star has gone under the knife. While Kim and Khloe have stayed mum on the majority of their procedures, their sisters Kourtney and Kylie Jenner, as well as their mom Kris, have been upfront about their enhancements. Kourtney’s proud of her aug-mented breast, Kylie’s face completely transformed once she received lip fillers, and Kris has admitted to botox, fillers, a boob job, a breast lift, laser resurfacing, and a face lift. Since their popularity is largely based on their appearance, we can’t blame them for going under the knife to ensure they always look Hollywood glam.
