Joseph Patrick "Joe" Kennedy, Sr. (September 6, 1888 – November 18, 1969) was an American businessman, investor, and government official. Kennedy was the husband of Rose Kennedy. Their children included President John F. Kennedy (1917–1963), Attorney General and Senator Robert F. Kennedy (1925–1968), and longtime Senator Ted Kennedy (1932–2009). He was a leading member of the Democratic Party and of the Irish Catholic community. He was the inaugural Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and later directed the Maritime Commission. Kennedy served as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1938 until late 1940, including the early part of World War II. Born to a political family in East Boston, Massachusetts, Kennedy embarked on a career in business and investing, first making a large fortune as a stock market and commodity investor and later rolled over the profits by investing in real estate and a wide range of business industries across the United States.[1] During World War I, he was an assistant general manager of a Boston area Bethlehem Steel shipyard, through which he developed a friendship with Franklin D. Roosevelt, then Assistant Secretary of the Navy. In the 1920s Kennedy made huge profits from reorganizing and refinancing several Hollywood studios, ultimately merging several acquisitions into Radio-Keith-Orpheum (RKO) studios.[2] After Prohibition of alcohol ended in 1933, Kennedy consolidated an even larger fortune when he traveled to Scotland with Roosevelt's son James to buy distribution rights for Scotch whisky. His company, Somerset Importers, became the exclusive American agent for Gordon's Gin and Dewar's Scotch. In addition, Kennedy purchased spirits-importation rights from Schenley Industries, a firm in Canada.[2] He owned the largest office building in the country, Chicago's Merchandise Mart, giving his family an important base in that city and an alliance with the Irish-American political leadership there. His term as ambassador and his political ambitions ended abruptly during the Battle of Britain in November 1940, with the publishing of his controversial remarks suggesting that "Democracy is finished in England. It may be here, [in the US]."[3] Kennedy resigned under pressure shortly afterwards. In later years, Kennedy worked behind the scenes to continue building the financial and political fortunes of the Kennedy family. After a disabling stroke in 1961, Kennedy developed aphasia and lost all power of speech, but remained mentally intact. He was confined to a wheelchair until his death in 1969. Kennedy plays a significant role as a character in Winston's War, Michael Dobbs' fictionalized account of the rise of Winston Churchill. In Richard Condon's thriller Winter Kills, Pa Keegan is a fictionalized version of Kennedy and is portrayed by John Huston in the film version of that novel. In the alternate history novel Fatherland by Robert Harris set in 1964, the senior Kennedy—not his son John F. Kennedy—is president of the United States and about to arrive in Berlin to conclude a treaty with Adolf Hitler. A fictionalized version of Joe Kennedy appears in the fifth season of the show Boardwalk Empire. He is portrayed by Matt Letscher. Kennedy has been portrayed by: Stephen Elliott in the 1977 movie Young Joe, the Forgotten Kennedy, E. G. Their wealth, glamour and sophistication were extensive and extraordinary that led them earn this honourable status since the past half-century. Kennedy, Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald, was believed to have been mentally challenged. Her mental illness comprising of depression and schizophrenia led to violent and severe mood swings for which her father arranged a secret lobotomy. However, the lobotomy impaired her cognitive abilities resulting to Rosemary's institutionalization till her death in 2005. This was followed by Joseph P. Kennedy's death in August 12, 1944 when his plane exploded over East Suffolk, England, as part of Project Anvil as well as that of Kathleen Cavendish, Marchioness of Hartington, in France on May 13, 1948. In August 23, 1956, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, wife of the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, gave birth to a stillborn daughter who is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Their fourth and final child, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, also experienced a tragic death just two days after his premature birth after suffering from Hyaline Membrane Disease, also called Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome (IRDS). Known to be the symbol of fashion for women across the globe, Jackie was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer in January 1994, resulting her death in May 19, 1994. On November 22, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was shot once in the throat and once in the head by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. However, the assassin was later killed by Jack Ruby two days later before a trial could take place. The following year, Edward M. “Ted” Kennedy, United States Senator from Massachusetts and a member of the Democratic Party, was involved in a plane crash killing one of his aides and the pilot. The Senator was recovered from the wreckage by Birch E. Bayh II and taken to a hospital where he underwent treatment from a broken back, a punctured lung, broken ribs and internal bleeding. Ted was also a part of the Chappaquiddick incident in July 18, 1969 where he accidentally drove his car off a bridge on the island fatally trapping his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. On 25th July, he had stated in a television show that he wondered “whether some awful curse did actually hang over all the Kennedys”. Again on November 17, 1973, Ted Kennedy, Jr. had his right leg amputated because of bone cancer. The Kennedy family saw another assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, American politician from Massachusetts and a Senator of New York, on June 5, 1968 by Sirhan Bishara Sirhan in Los Angeles just after his victory in the California Democratic presidential primary. In August 13, 1973, Joseph P. Kennedy II, American businessman and Democratic politician, crashed a car and left his passenger, Pam Kelley, paralyzed. After two years, Martha Moxley was bludgeoned to death with a golf club by Michael Skakel, nephew of Ethel Skakel Kennedy. By April 25, 1984, the fourth child of Robert F. Kennedy, David Anthony Kennedy died of a cocaine and pethidine overdose in a Palm Beach, Florida hotel room. “The Kennedy Curse” further continued with the arrest of William Kennedy Smith for raping a young woman at the Kennedy estate in Palm Beach, Florida; Michael LeMoyne Kennedy's skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado; death of John F. Kennedy, Jr. when the Piper Saratoga light aircraft he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Martha's Vineyard due to pilot error along with wife Carolyn Jeanne Bessette and his sister-in-law as well as Kara Kennedy Allen's death after a heart attack while exercising in a Washington, D.C. health club. The recent demise from the Kennedy Family were those of Mary Richardson Kennedy on May 16, 2012 after she hanged herself on the grounds of her home in Bedford, Westchester County, New York and Kerry Kennedy on July 13, 2012 due to her influence of zolpidem.
