We would have never hiked the Colorado trail if it wasn't for our 200 mile thru hike of the John Muir Trail in 2013. The Colorado Trail is perhaps the most incredible multi-use trail in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. After the JMT, we knew it was next on our list.
Andy and I embarked on the John Muir Trail in 2013 and at the time it was by far the biggest backpacking trip either of us had ever done. I had done one 3 day backpacking trip prior to the JMT and Andy had completed a handful of overnight backpacking trips. We headed out not knowing what to expect, and came back knowing that we wanted to do a longer backpacking trip once a summer. This was our longer backpacking trip for 2015. We always end the trips joking about how much we hate hiking. Kids have never written "Hiking" as their favorite sport on a 1st grade project. That's something to think about. An older gentleman from Houston joked, "Hiking is a great sport except for the walking." That idea pretty much sums up how we feel about it. The walking makes you sore. The sleep isn't like what you'd get at home. Sometimes difficult challenges come up. Despite all of that, we always look back on our experiences knowing that the time was totally worth it.
Enough about all that. Now some notes on the video itself:
This video is an experiment in storytelling for me. I've found it to be difficult to craft a really good story around a hiking trip where you have no idea what's going to happen ahead of time. Hiking seems kind of uneventful and any great story has to have a main character who experiences challenges, so how do you capture that naturally? In my Rocky Mountain National Park video, the hail, daily rainstorms, and big elevation gains just worked out. I felt those weather elements made it somewhat interesting to watch...but I didn't want to depend on "getting lucky" (or unlucky) with the challenges on the Colorado trail. I wondered if I could take my past backpacking challenges and work them into the Colorado trail video. By doing this, I knew what the challenges of the story would be ahead of time, so I could focus on the important elements while out on the trail. I picked 3 of my favorite hiking stories where I had some unfortunate events. I wanted to have it jump back and forth between Andy and I telling the story to show that we chose to remember (or forget) certain details, but both sides paint the whole picture. For example, I wanted to leave out that I fell in the river and have Andy be sure to highlight that detail. I wanted to make a subtle connection that bad things have happened in the past, and they could happen in the future. I thought this might build some tension.
There's a stark difference in color grading because I wanted it to be absolutely clear which stories were accounts of past events and what memories were being made currently on the Colorado Trail. The past events are desaturated, to symbolize an old memory. The Colorado Trail footage is overly saturated to symbolize a vivid new experience. The last time-lapsed portion, toward the very end, is somewhere in between to symbolize a fading memory flying by as we reflected about our time on the trail. I left out any significant stories that may have happened on the trail, because I wanted to leave it up to the imagination. What stories are there from the trail that you haven't heard yet?
The concept came into being after a call with my brother where I was trying to find what parts of backpacking were relatable to almost everyone. He mentioned the memories that you make with people outdoors tend to increase as you spend more time outside...And that the best stories happen when you push yourself and go further. The "Go further" part stuck and decided that I wanted to make a story about why we "Go Further" even after facing some harder times on past trips.

Diamondback's Eric Porter planned a unique adventure to bike the famous Colorado trail from Silverton to Durango - a burly 90 mile bike pack across several mountain passes at some serious elevation. To get to the trailhead, they commuted on the historic Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge train. With a good crew consisting of Jess Pedersen, Mason Mashon, and Ben Gavelda, the foursome was eager to spend their days cruising through long autumn shadows, colorful leaves and views for days. Right now the trail is covered in several feet of snow, but come mid summer you could ride part or all of it as well. Check out their video for a little inspiration. Happy trails!

Colorado (
i/kɒləˈrædoʊ/, or /kɒləˈrɑːdoʊ/) (Spanish for "ruddy") is a state in the United States encompassing most of the Southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. Colorado is part of the Western United States, the Southwestern United States, and the Mountain States. Colorado is the 8th most extensive and the 22nd most populous of the 50 United States. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of Colorado was 5,456,574 on July 1, 2015, an increase of 8.50% since the 2010 United States Census.
The state was named for the Colorado River, which Spanish travelers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy (Spanish: colorado) silt the river carried from the mountains. The Territory of Colorado was organized on February 28, 1861, and on August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. Colorado is nicknamed the "Centennial State" because it became a state 28 days after the centennial of the United States Declaration of Independence.

Donald Trump
Donald John Trump, Sr. (born June 14, 1946) is an American businessperson and media personality. He is the chairman and president of The Trump Organization and the founder of Trump Entertainment Resorts. Trump's career, branding efforts, personal life, wealth, and outspoken manner have made him famous throughout the country. Ted Cruz
Rafael Edward "Ted" Cruz (born December 22, 1970) is an American politician and the junior United States Senator from Texas. He is a candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States, in the 2016 presidential election.
Cruz graduated from Princeton University in 1992, and from Harvard Law School in 1995. Between 1999 and 2003, Cruz was the director of the Office of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission, an associate deputy attorney general at the United States Department of Justice, and domestic policy advisor to President George W. Bush on the 2000 George W. Bush presidential campaign. He served as Solicitor General of Texas from 2003 to 2008, appointed by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott. He was the first Hispanic, and the longest-serving solicitor general, in Texas history. From 2004 to 2009, Cruz was also an adjunct professor of law at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, where he taught U.S. Supreme Court litigation.
Cruz ran for the Senate seat vacated by fellow Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison, and in July 2012 defeated Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst during the Republican primary runoff, 57%–43%. Cruz then defeated former state Representative Paul Sadler in the November 2012 general election, winning 56%–41%. He is the first Hispanic American to serve as a U.S. senator representing Texas, and is one of three Senators of Cuban descent. Cruz chairs the United States Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight, Federal Rights and Agency Activities, and is also the chairman of the United States Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Space, Science and Competitiveness. In November 2012, he was appointed vice-chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Diamondback's Eric Porter planned a unique adventure to bike the famous Colorado trail from Silverton to Durango - a burly 90 mile bike pack across several mountain passes at some serious elevation. To get to the trailhead, they commuted on the historic Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge train. With a good crew consisting of Jess Pedersen, Mason Mashon, and Ben Gavelda, the foursome was eager to spend their days cruising through long autumn shadows, colorful leaves and views for days. Right now the trail is covered in several feet of snow, but come mid summer you could ride part or all of it as well. Check out their video for a little inspiration. Happy trails! We would have never hiked the Colorado trail if it wasn't for our 200 mile thru hike of the John Muir Trail in 2013. The Colorado Trail is perhaps the most incredible multi-use trail in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. After the JMT, we knew it was next on our list.
Andy and I embarked on the John Muir Trail in 2013 and at the time it was by far the biggest backpacking trip either of us had ever done. I had done one 3 day backpacking trip prior to the JMT and Andy had completed a handful of overnight backpacking trips. We headed out not knowing what to expect, and came back knowing that we wanted to do a longer backpacking trip once a summer. This was our longer backpacking trip for 2015. We always end the trips joking about how much we hate hiking. Kids have never written "Hiking" as their favorite sport on a 1st grade project. That's something to think about. An older gentleman from Houston joked, "Hiking is a great sport except for the walking." That idea pretty much sums up how we feel about it. The walking makes you sore. The sleep isn't like what you'd get at home. Sometimes difficult challenges come up. Despite all of that, we always look back on our experiences knowing that the time was totally worth it.
Enough about all that. Now some notes on the video itself:
This video is an experiment in storytelling for me. I've found it to be difficult to craft a really good story around a hiking trip where you have no idea what's going to happen ahead of time. Hiking seems kind of uneventful and any great story has to have a main character who experiences challenges, so how do you capture that naturally? In my Rocky Mountain National Park video, the hail, daily rainstorms, and big elevation gains just worked out. I felt those weather elements made it somewhat interesting to watch...but I didn't want to depend on "getting lucky" (or unlucky) with the challenges on the Colorado trail. I wondered if I could take my past backpacking challenges and work them into the Colorado trail video. By doing this, I knew what the challenges of the story would be ahead of time, so I could focus on the important elements while out on the trail. I picked 3 of my favorite hiking stories where I had some unfortunate events. I wanted to have it jump back and forth between Andy and I telling the story to show that we chose to remember (or forget) certain details, but both sides paint the whole picture. For example, I wanted to leave out that I fell in the river and have Andy be sure to highlight that detail. I wanted to make a subtle connection that bad things have happened in the past, and they could happen in the future. I thought this might build some tension.
There's a stark difference in color grading because I wanted it to be absolutely clear which stories were accounts of past events and what memories were being made currently on the Colorado Trail. The past events are desaturated, to symbolize an old memory. The Colorado Trail footage is overly saturated to symbolize a vivid new experience. The last time-lapsed portion, toward the very end, is somewhere in between to symbolize a fading memory flying by as we reflected about our time on the trail. I left out any significant stories that may have happened on the trail, because I wanted to leave it up to the imagination. What stories are there from the trail that you haven't heard yet?
The concept came into being after a call with my brother where I was trying to find what parts of backpacking were relatable to almost everyone. He mentioned the memories that you make with people outdoors tend to increase as you spend more time outside...And that the best stories happen when you push yourself and go further. The "Go further" part stuck and decided that I wanted to make a story about why we "Go Further" even after facing some harder times on past trips.

Diamondback's Eric Porter planned a unique adventure to bike the famous Colorado trail from Silverton to Durango - a burly 90 mile bike pack across several mountain passes at some serious elevation. To get to the trailhead, they commuted on the historic Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge train. With a good crew consisting of Jess Pedersen, Mason Mashon, and Ben Gavelda, the foursome was eager to spend their days cruising through long autumn shadows, colorful leaves and views for days. Denver is the capital of the U.S. state of Colorado and is located at 1,600 metres above sea level, on a sunny high plateau on the edge of the Rocky Mountains.
A number of brave pioneers once believed that Denver would be an ideal centre of trade and despite Indian hostilities and various other hazards, they decided to build a town in this region.
The 16th Street Mall is the city's pride. Inaugurated in 1982, it is a splendid avenue that boasts the longest pedestrianised area in the U.S.A. Trees, fountains and sculptures adorn the street as well as horses and carriages.
On Arapahoe Street, close to 16th Street ,is the Daniels And Fisher Tower. In 1911, William Cooke Daniels ordered the construction of a bell tower above his shop. It resembled the Campanile of Venice and was designed to create a good degree of southern charm.
Denver became a boomtown when the railroad arrived in 1870. The Native Indians were forced to make way for those arriving by railroad and who were attracted by the possibility of making an easy buck.
This once lively village has now developed into a modern city and the former trading arenas for fur, gold and silver have now been replaced by a skyline of glittering skyscrapers!

I worked an internship in the Bay Area of California over the summer of 2015. I ended up leaving a week early, packed my car, and drove East towards the mountains. I found myself at the Waterton Canyon trailhead with a loaded bike, butterflies in my stomach, and hopes of seeing Durango in 10 days time. Having only 14 days until my senior year of college started back up in Kansas, I knew that I'd have to put in some long days in order to finish on time and get back home. I wasn't sure how I would handle it, I'm not really a great technical rider (I mean, I'm from Kansas haha). Having hiked the CT back in 2013, I can say that biking it is a completely different beast. Ducati Scrambler in the Colorado Rockies rough ride
Took the 2016 Ducati Scrambler Classic up a road that may have been a little too challenging for the street bike or this rider. Rode up to Montezuma and went from just over 10,000 feet to close to 13,000 feet above sea level. Fitted with a rear Conti TKC80 getting traction was no problem but the big rocks and not so suitable suspension caused me to come off twice. I've ridden smaller bikes on roads like this but I'll be the first to admit this was a rookie move. Luckily the bike received no damage besides a mysteriously broken kill switch (NOT ONE SCRATCH ON THE TANK!). As you will see the high altitude had me making some really dumb decisions (like trying to stall the rear tire with my hands while it was stuck in first when I could have just turned the key off) all while gasping for air. ...

These are my Day by Day videos of my 46 day thru-hike of the Colorado Trail in 2014 including the Collegiate Peaks Loop,(East and West). The Colorado Trail is a long-distance trail running for 486 miles (782 km) from the mouth of Waterton Canyon South West of Denver to Durango Colorado. The Trail is divided into 28 segments and 5 segments that make up the Collegiate West which runs for 80 Miles, Its highest point is 13,271 feet above sea level, and most of the trail is above 10,000 feet. I found myself at the Waterton Canyon trailhead with a loaded bike, butterflies in my stomach, and hopes of seeing Durango in 10 days time. Having only 14 days until my senior year of college started back up in Kansas, I knew that I'd have to put in some long days in order to finish on time and get back home. I wasn't sure how I would handle it, I'm not really a great technical rider (I mean, I'm from Kansas haha). Having hiked the CT back in 2013, I can say that biking it is a completely different beast. But if adventure is calling your name and tells you to bring your bike, go for it! Did I do the trail perfectly? Nope. I hitched on 3 separate occasions, skipped crappier sections of trail, and didn't even reach the end due to a flat and a broken pump! But all that being said, the experience of bikepacking the CT was incredible and is a time I think back on often. Race? I think yes :)

Took the 2016 Ducati Scrambler Classic up a road that may have been a little too challenging for the street bike or this rider. Rode up to Montezuma and went from just over 10,000 feet to close to 13,000 feet above sea level. Fitted with a rear Conti TKC80 getting traction was no problem but the big rocks and not so suitable suspension caused me to come off twice. I've ridden smaller bikes on roads like this but I'll be the first to admit this was a rookie move. Luckily the bike received no damage besides a mysteriously broken kill switch (NOT ONE SCRATCH ON THE TANK!). As you will see the high altitude had me making some really dumb decisions (like trying to stall the rear tire with my hands while it was stuck in first when I could have just turned the key off) all while gasping for air. The biggest damage was to my ego as I tucked tail and returned home.

These are my Day by Day videos of my 46 day thru-hike of the Colorado Trail in 2014 including the Collegiate Peaks Loop,(East and West). The Colorado Trail is a long-distance trail running for 486 miles (782 km) from the mouth of Waterton Canyon South West of Denver to Durango Colorado.
The Trail is divided into 28 segments and 5 segments that make up the Collegiate West which runs for 80 Miles, Its highest point is 13,271 feet above sea level, and most of the trail is above 10,000 feet. It is often considered one of the most beautiful trail mile for mile in the United States.
I was new to thru hiking and didn’t have any of the proper equipment, so I researched all the gear I’d need, trained really hard and completed the trail with no big issues at all.
I researched the trail and couldn’t find any detailed videos on what the water sources look like, where to resupply, the weather, campsites and how the terrain changes so much in a day.
I made it my goal to capture the trail and my experience on it, in hopes that it will inspire others to get out and explore their own trail just like I got inspired by other people's thru hiking videos.
This is the largest group of videos about the Colorado Trail, and will be a great resource for anyone planning a trip on the Colorado Trail.
