Forces of the UN-backed Libyan government battled with Islamic State fighters near Sirte, birthplace of dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Libya has been ravaged by inter-militia infighting since the toppling and killing of Gaddafi in an uprising inspired by the Arab spring in 2011.
