Dashcam u-turn footage leads to slap on wrist for police officer

A police officer caught pulling out in front of a vehicle on a highway in Perth's southern suburbs has been ordered to undertake a refresher training course. 

The risky manoeuvre, which occurred on Saturday, was caught on the driver's dashcam.

Footage posted to Facebook shows a police car pull out in front of a moving car.

​It shows the police vehicle parked on the hard shoulder of the South West Highway in Byford suddenly pulling into oncoming traffic in a 90 kilometre an hour zone. 

A police spokeswoman said the police officer behind the wheel was trying to intercept a car at the time of the near-miss.

"Police carry out a significant number of vehicle intercepts every day and acknowledge that conducting vehicle intercepts present risks," she said. 

"In this instance the driver was of the belief that he could execute the 'u-turn' safely. 

"Having viewed the vision he accepts that this may not be the case however his manner of driving is not unlawful due to the provisions of the Road Traffic Act."

It has also been reported the police have offered an apology to the driver.
