Manaus is the capital city of the state of Amazonas in northern Brazil. It is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. With a population of two million, it is the most populous city of Amazonas.
The city was founded in 1693-94 as the Fort of São José do Rio Negro. It was elevated to a town in 1832 with the name of "Manaus", an altered spelling of the indigenous Manaós peoples, and legally transformed into a city on October 24, 1848, with the name of Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro, Portuguese for "The City of the Margins of Black River". On September 4, 1856 it returned to its original name.
Manaus is located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, and access to the city is primarily through boat or airplane. This isolation helped preserve both the nature as well as the culture of the city. The culture of Manaus, more than in any other urban area of Brazil, preserves the habits of Native Brazilian tribes. The city is the main entrance to visit the fauna and flora of the Brazilian Amazon. Few places in the world afford such a variety of plants, birds, insects, and fishes.
It was known at the beginning of the century, as "Heart of the Amazon" and "City of the Forest". Currently its main economic engine is the Industrial Pool of Manaus, the famous Free Economic Zone. The city has a free port and an international airport. Its manufactures include electronics, chemical products, and soap; there are distilling and ship construction industries. Manaus also exports Brazil nuts, rubber, jute and rosewood oil. It has a cathedral, opera house, zoological and botanical gardens, an ecopark and regional and native peoples museums.
With a population of 1.9 million people in 2014, Manaus is the most populous city in the Brazilian Amazon area and the 7th most populous in the country.[6] Located on the north bank of the Negro River, 11 miles (18 km) above the meeting of the rivers where the Negro merges with the Solimões, Manaus is 900 miles (1,450 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean. It is the hub of tourism for the rivers, the jungle lodges and the river cruises.
The Solimões and Negro rivers meet in Manaus and join to form the Amazon River (using the Brazilian definition of the river; elsewhere, Solimões is considered the upper part of the Amazon). Rubber made it the richest city in South America during the late 1800s. Rubber also helped Manaus earn its nickname, the "Paris of the Tropics". Many wealthy European families settled in Manaus and brought their love for sophisticated European art, architecture and culture with them. Manaus is also a duty-free zone, which has encouraged development in the region.

Sheislane Hayalla claims rival Carolina Toledo had 'bought' victory
Rose Troup Buchanan Author Biography
Monday 02 February 2015
A Brazilian beauty contest erupted into chaos after a furious runner-up snatched the crown off the winner’s head, threw it to the ground and then stormed off the stage.
Carolina Toledo, 20, was crowned Miss Amazon 2015 last week – but at the ceremony competitor Sheislane Hayalla, 23, decided she wasn’t happy with the result.
In front of a screaming crowd, who captured events on camera, Ms Hayalla suddenly strode forward and snatched the tiara off Ms Toledo, a law student, before she chucked it onto the ground and stormed off stage.
The assembled beauty contestants looked on in horror – seemingly unable to move – as events unfolded.
Organisers were quicker to respond, with one man jumping onto the stage to retrieve the tiara as it rolled away from the no doubt distraught beauty queen on Friday night, in Manaus.
On Saturday, Ms Hayalla – a model and biology student – said her rival had “bought” her victory, insisting that “money talks” and claimed Ms Toledo “didn’t deserve the title,” according to the Mail Online.
In a Facebook post that evening she wrote: “I do not accept injustice ... and will never let something go unpunished, but expressed my disapproval to the attitudes that were seen during the preparation for Miss Amazon.”
Ms Toledo has so far refused to comment on events during her crowning, instead releasing the following statement: “This is an unbelievable feeling. I don't have words to explain the way I feel.”
The winner of Miss Amazon will represent the state in the national contest for Miss Brazil.

Sheislane Hayalla adalah runner up pertama Miss Amazon 2015.

Sheislane Hayalla adalah runner up pertama Miss Amazon 2015.

Amazonas State Tours Video - Amazonas is Brazil's largest state, spanning almost 1.6 million sq km. You could fit four Germanys within its borders with room left over for, say, Greece. It is here that the massive Solimões, Negro and Madeira rivers converge to form the Rio Amazonas, the granddaddy of them all. Manaus is the state capital and, with nearly two million people, the largest city in the Amazon region. Manaus is easy to reach by air, and the vast majority of travelers arrive there first. Tour operators in Manaus specialize in three- to six-day jungle tours. You can also book riverboat tours here, and the city itself has some worthwhile sights. Manaus is also a good jumping-off point for jungle trips further up the Rio Solimões, including Tefé and the outstanding Mamirauá reserve, or for the remote regions of the Rio Negro.

Earth from Space is presented by Kelsea Brennan-Wessels from the ESA Web-TV virtual studios. In the eighty-sixth edition, we explore Boca do Acre in western Brazil. This Envisat radar image was acquired over the city of Boca do Acre in western Brazil.
The city lies within Amazonas state, the largest Brazilian state by area, and almost completely covered by the Amazon Rainforest.
The name Boca do Acre -- or 'mouth of the Acre' -- comes from its location on the banks where the Acre and Purus rivers meet.
Along the river's main course are free-standing 'oxbow lakes', formed when a river changes course.
This scene is a compilation of three images from Envisat's radar, acquired on 28 October 2005, 12 September 2008 and 17 September 2010. The individual images are each assigned a colour -- red, green and blue -- and when combined, reveal changes in the surface between Envisat's passes.
In this image, the colours reveal large areas of deforestation -- evident by the large, geometrically shaped plots cut out along linear roads.
Given its size and frequent cloud cover, remote sensing using radar images is the best way to study the Amazon Basin on a large scale, especially for assessing the extent and damage due to deforestation. Radars can observe during both day and night and through any weather conditions.
Satellite observations also support the United Nations' Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in developing countries, or REDD, initiative.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into oxygen, while trees that rot, are cut down or burnt actually emit carbon dioxide. So preserving forests not only keeps them from releasing the gas, it ensures the absorption of carbon dioxide from other sources.
REDD gives a financial incentive for developing countries to maintain forested areas. Reducing or preventing deforestation is the mitigation option with the largest and most immediate carbon stock impact in the short term, as the release of carbon as emissions into the atmosphere is prevented.
Upcoming missions such as Sentinel-1 and -2, being developed for Europe's Copernicus programme, as well as ESA's Biomass satellite, will support REDD in forest mapping and monitoring.

Belém (Portuguese pronunciation: [beˈlẽj]) is a Brazilian municipality, the capital and largest city of the state of Pará in the country's north. It is the gateway to the River Amazon with a busy port, airport, and bus/coach station. Belém lies approximately 100 km upriver from the Atlantic Ocean, on the Pará River, which is part of the greater Amazon River system, separated from the larger part of the Amazon delta by Ilha de Marajó (Marajo Island). With an estimated population of 1,402,056 people — or 2,249,405, considering its metropolitan area — it is the 11th most populous city in Brazil, as well as the 16th by economic relevance. It is the second largest in the North Region, second only to Manaus, in the state of Amazonas,
Founded in 1616 by the Kingdom of Portugal, Belém was the first European colony on the Amazon but did not become part of Brazil until 1775. The newer part of the city has modern buildings and skyscrapers. The colonial portion retains the charm of tree-filled squares, churches and traditional blue tiles. The city has a rich history and architecture from colonial times. Recently it witnessed a skyscraper boom.
Belém, literally Bethlehem is also known as the Metropolis of the Brazilian Amazon region or the Cidade das Mangueiras (City of Mango Trees) due to the vast number of those trees found in the city. Brazilians often refer to the city as Belém do Pará ("Belém of Pará") rather than just Belém, a reference to an earlier name for the city, Santa Maria de Belém do Grão Pará, and also to differentiate it from a number of other towns called Belém in Brazil. It is named after Santa Maria de Belém in Lisbon, also better known by its shortened name, Belém.
Belém is served by two airports: Val de Cães International Airport, which connects the city with the rest of Brazil and other cities in South America, and Brig. Protásio de Oliveira Airport (Júlio César) Airport dedicated to general aviation. The city is also home to the Federal University of Pará.
Manaus (Portuguese pronunciation: [mɐˈnaws] or [mɐˈnawʃ]), or Manáos before 1939, or (formerly) Lugar de Barra do Rio Negro, is the capital city of the state of Amazonas in northern Brazil. It is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. With a population of two million, it is the most populous city of Amazonas, and also the most populous city of the Amazon rainforest.
With a population of 2 million people in 2014, Manaus is the most populous city in the Brazilian Amazon area and the 7th most populous in the country.Located on the north bank of the Negro River, 11 miles (18 km) above the meeting of the rivers where the Negro merges with the Solimões, Manaus is 900 miles (1,450 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean.
Manaus is also a duty-free zone, which has encouraged development in the region.
wn.com/Planet Travel The Mega Cities In The Mighty Amazon River Belém And Manaus (Manáos)

Travel video about destination Amazonica in Brazil.
In today’s world, an expedition on an Amazonas ship into the depths of the rain forestmust surely be one of the most thrilling experiences possible. An adventure within a tropical world of wonder that has not yet been consumed by civilisation. Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian federal state of Amazonas, lies on the banks of the Rio Negro and is surrounded by impenetrable rain forest. From here explorers ventured further into the wilderness by boat and even today the Amazonians travel by boat as the rivers serve as roads through the jungle. The city’s huge cathedral was constructed during the rubber boom which made it prosper. A journey of several days is about to begin on the Amazon Clipper, upstream on the Rio Negro, one of the region’s main rivers, and into the vast jungle beyond. A self-contained system of more than a thousand inlets supply the Amazon, as well as water from the surrounding mountains. Numerous water courses, jungles and climatic zones form this region, from the Andes of Peru to as far as the Brazilian Delta where the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Only from the pilot’s bridge is the tangled labyrinth of the many water courses between the region’s small islands, recognizable. Often the islands are flooded up to the tops of the trees. Soon we come to the Anavilhanas Archipelago, the largest fresh water archipelago on Earth, a huge complex of three hundred and fifty islands For the journey of a lifetime, the Amazon and its rain forests are an absolute must!

Ayahuasca and Amazonian Shamanism
An informative and compelling exploration of Shamanic use of Ayahuasca, the extraordinary visionary brew. - Rick Strassman MD, author DMT: The Spirit Molecule
Human Future will be designed on how conscious we will be able to make ourselves and if there are plants that can accelerate consciousness then we must seek out and utilize these things. Something could jump out of some unexpected dimension and change everything. - Terrence McKenna
Shamans of the Amazon by Dean Jefferys is one of the best documentaries available on the use of ayahuasca in contemporary context, in traditional cultures that are being destabilized by the forces of globalization. As Jefferys' documentary makes clear, the revival of traditional shamanic practices with ayahuasca is proving to be a potent political and propaganda tool for reaffirming and preserving cultural values and identity in indigenous societies that are buffeted by environmental, economic, and societal forces beyond their control. - Dennis McKenna PhD, co-author The Invisible Landscape
In a time when indigenous people, their culture and the natural environment are experiencing dramatic changes, this in-depth series of programs examine what these SHAMANS OF THE AMAZON, their hallucinogenic rituals and their special relationship with nature have to offer humanity at this crucial time in history. Discover how westerners around the world are using Ayahuasca and other Shamanic plants to receive knowledge, to understand their relationship with nature and to seek visions of how best to deal with deep personal, spiritual and environmental questions. In a say no to drugs era, there is a new subculture emerging, based on an ancient ritual of hallucinogenic plant use.
Ayahuasca is an Amazonian plant mixture that is capable of inducing altered states of consciousness, usually lasting between 4 to 8 hours after ingestion. Ranging from mildly stimulating to extremely visionary, ayahuasca is used primarily as a medicine and as a shamanic means of communication, typically in a ceremonial session under the guidance of an experienced drinker.
The main ingredient of this jungle tea is a vine, Banisteriopsis caapi, which like the tea itself is also called ayahuasca (which means ‘vine of the soul' or 'vine with a soul’). The secondary ingredient is either chacruna (Psychotria viridis) or chagropanga (Diplopterys cabrerana), plants that contain a relatively high amount of the psychedelic substance DMT.
Nobody knows for sure how long this drink has been used. First recorded Western contact with ayahuasca was made in 1851 by Richard Spruce, the famous ethnobotanist from England. When taking into account archeological evidence of comparable native plant use, it seems likely that its use dates back to at least two millennia ago.
Ayahuasca induces a psychedelic, visionary state of mind and this effect is employed by various people for various reasons.
Shamans or medicine men take ayahuasca to communicate with nature or to see what is causing a patient’s illness on a spiritual level. In Brazil several religions can be found that pivot around gatherings where ayahuasca is taken by all participants. Drinking ayahuasca and singing together takes them into a healing and inspiring kind of trance.
In the past few decades ayahuasca is slowly gaining interest from Western society as well. Not only academic researchers in the field of psychotherapy have shown an increased interest. Psychonauts, i.e. people who practice responsible and conscious use of mind-altering substances, use ayahuasca to confront themselves with the richness of the mind, the infinity of the universe, and their deepest fears, so as to experience ecstasy resulting from facing and overcoming these fears.
One effect of ayahuasca is that it makes a lot of people vomit and many drinkers get diarrhea. One tribe calls ayahuasca 'kamarampi', which stems from 'kamarank': to vomit. It is also called ‘la purga’, as it purges the body through this physical effect, and purifies the mind through the meaningful psychological experiences or visions. You usually feel totally refreshed and reborn after a strong experience.
Although not unique to ayahuasca, there are many fascinating reports about people who have been healed from comprehensive problems, like addiction or depression, during one or more sessions. This, however, can also be achieved using LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, iboga, other psychedelics or various breathing and meditation techniques, and always involves heavy psychological work.
Ayahuasca is not a miracle cure in the sense that you drink the brew and all your troubles have vanished within a couple of hours. It is a miracle cure though, in the sense that it brings unconscious and seemingly other-worldly processes to surface, which enables you to work with it while the effects last.
