‘All of these tragedies’

1. Campaign events cancelled

The killing of five law enforcement officers in Dallas overnight led the Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton campaigns to cancel planned campaign events. Clinton was keeping plans to speak Friday evening at a Philadelphia church.

2. Calls for peace and unity

I mourn for the officers shot while doing their sacred duty to protect peaceful protesters, for their families & all who serve with them.

We must restore law and order. We must restore the confidence of our people to be safe and secure in their homes and on the street. The senseless, tragic deaths of two motorists [sic] in Louisiana and Minnesota reminds us how much more needs to be done.

The attack on police officers in Dallas last night is horrifying and despicable. We must as a nation stand against violence of all kinds.

I believe that I speak for every single American when I say that we are horrified over these events, and that we stand united with the people and the police department in Dallas.

Who could have fathomed such horror? ... There will be temptation to let our anger harden our divisions. Let’s not let that happen. There’s gonna be a temptation to let our anger send us further into our corners. Let’s not let that happen.

If you are a normal, white American, the truth is you don’t understand being black in America and you instinctively under-estimate the level of discrimination and the level of additional risk.

I was beaten bloody by police officers. But I never hated them. I said, 'Thank you for your service.'

Laura and I are heartbroken by the heinous acts of violence in our city last night. Murdering the innocent is always evil, never more so than when the lives taken belong to those who protect our families and communities.

No one should be subject to the senseless violence we have seen the last few days. We are better than this. Praying for the families today.

All life is precious and it grieves us to see it lost in the many ways it has been this week. All of these tragedies need to be investigated and justice needs to be served in an open and transparent way.

May we stop seeing people as black, white, brown or wearing blue & see them instead as husbands, wives, sons, daughters & children of God.

After the events of this week, Americans across our country are feeling a sense of helplessness, of uncertainty and of fear ... But the answer must not be violence. … Rather, the answer, our answer, all our answer must be action. Calm, peaceful, collaborative and determined action.
