Mike Stern (born January 10, 1953) is a six-time Grammy nominee American jazz guitarist. After playing for a few years with Blood, Sweat & Tears, he landed a gig with drummer Billy Cobham and then broke through with trumpeter Miles Davis' band from 1981 to 1983, and again in 1985. Following that he launched a solo career, releasing more than a dozen albums.
Stern was hailed as the Best Jazz Guitarist of 1993 by Guitar Player magazine. At the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in June 2007, Stern was honored with the Miles Davis Award, which was created to recognize internationally acclaimed jazz artists whose body of work has contributed significantly to the renewal of the genre. In 2009 Stern was listed on Down Beat's list of 75 best jazz guitar players of all time. He was presented with Guitar Player magazine's Certified Legend Award on January 21, 2012.
Stern was born Michael Sedgwick in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Helen (Burroughs) and Henry Dwight Sedgwick V. "Stern" is the surname of his stepfather. He is the half-brother of actress Kyra Sedgwick; his full sister, Holly, is the mother of actor Philip Nozuka and singers George Nozuka, Justin Nozuka, and Henry Nozuka. Stern is married to guitarist and vocalist Leni Stern.
Robert Berg (April 7, 1951 – December 5, 2002) was a jazz saxophonist originally from Brooklyn, New York City.
Berg started his musical education at the age of six when he began studying classical piano. He began playing the saxophone at the age of thirteen. He was a Juilliard graduate influenced heavily by the late 1964–67 period of John Coltrane's music. Berg was known for his extremely expressive playing and tone.
A student from the hard bop school, Berg played from 1973 to 1976 with Horace Silver and from 1977 to 1983 with Cedar Walton. Berg became more widely known through his short period in the Miles Davis band. He left Davis's band in 1987 after recording only one album, You're Under Arrest, with them.
After leaving Davis's band, Berg released a series of solo albums and also performed and recorded frequently in a group co-led with guitarist Mike Stern. On these albums he played a more accessible style of music, mixing funk, jazz and even country music with many other diverse compositional elements to produce albums that were always musical. He often played at the 7th Avenue South NYC club. He worked with Chick Corea, Steve Gadd and Eddie Gómez in a quartet. Berg's tenor saxophone sound was a synthesis of rhythm and blues players such as Junior Walker and Arnett Cobb with the lyricism, intellectual freedom and soul of Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson and John Coltrane.
Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was an American jazz musician, trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. Widely considered one of the most influential and innovative musicians of the 20th century, Miles Davis was, together with his musical groups, at the forefront of several major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, post-bop and jazz fusion.
In 2006, Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which recognized him as "one of the key figures in the history of jazz". In 2008, his 1959 album Kind of Blue received its fourth platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for shipments of at least four million copies in the United States. On December 15, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a symbolic resolution recognizing and commemorating the album Kind of Blue on its 50th anniversary, "honoring the masterpiece and reaffirming jazz as a national treasure".

I'd like to begin this series of columns with a look at a topic all guitar players face on a daily basis: how to warm up in ways that are both physically effective and musically rewarding. Most of the time, I warm up just by playing. I usually start with single-note lines, played in time, and move freely around the fretboard. Often, I'll start each day with a bunch of stuff that I had been working on the night before. I'm always trying to learn, becau...

At GearFest 2015, Sweetwater & Yamaha brought together to Ft. Wayne two (2) iconic Yamaha-endorsed artists to play at the conclusion of the event - Mr. Mike Stern (Guitar) & Mr. Nathan East (Bass). They were joined by Sweetwater's very own, Mr. Nick D'Virgilio on drums (who did a fantastic job!). All we can say is WATCH THIS and know that we all "make it up as we go along......". Simply incredible what Mike, Nathan & Nick "pulled off" for all of us to enjoy! We hope you enjoy this as much as we did filming what happened on stage, that afternoon, as GearFest 2015 concluded. Sincerely & Enjoy Until Next Year, The Musician Network (TMNtv)
