A video from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) demonstrating North Korean Military Power. The Korean People's Army (KPA; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선인민군; Chosŏn inmin'gun) constitutes the military forces of North Korea. Kim Jong-un is the Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, Chairman of Central Military Commission and National Defence Commission. The KPA consists of five branches, Ground Force, the Navy, the Air Force, the Strategic Rocket Forces, and the Special Operation Force. Also, the Worker-Peasant Red Guards come under control of the KPA.
In 1971, Kim Il-sung directed that "Military Foundation Day" be changed from 8 February to 25 April, the nominal day of establishment of his anti-Japanese guerrilla army in 1932, to recognize the supposedly indigenous Korean origins of the KPA and obscure its Soviet origin.[6] An active arms industry had been developed to produce long-range missiles such as the Rodong-1.[7]
The KPA faces its primary adversaries, the Republic of Korea Armed Forces and United States Forces Korea, across the Korean Demilitarized Zone, as it has since the Armistice Agreement of July 1953. As of 2013, with 9,495,000 active, reserve, and paramilitary personnel, it is the largest military organization on Earth.[8] This number represents nearly 40% of the population,[9] and is the numeric equivalent of the entire population between ages 20 and 45.[10]
History[edit]
The Korean People's Army history began with the Korean Volunteer Army (KVA), which was formed in Yenan, China, in 1939. The two individuals responsible for the army were Kim Tu-bong and Mu Chong. At the same time, a school was established near Yenan for training military and political leaders for a future independent Korea. By 1945, the KVA had grown to approximately 1,000 men, mostly Korean deserters from the Imperial Japanese Army. During this period, the KVA fought alongside the Chinese communist forces from which it drew its arms and ammunition. After the defeat of the Japanese, the KVA accompanied the Chinese communist forces into Manchuria, intending to gain recruits from the Korean population of Manchuria and then enter Korea. By September 1945, the KVA had a 2,500 strong force at its disposal.
Just after World War II and during the Soviet Union's occupation of the part of Korea north of the 38th Parallel, the Soviet 25th Army headquarters in Pyongyang issued a statement ordering all armed resistance groups in the northern part of the peninsula to disband on October 12, 1945. Two thousand Koreans with previous experience in the Soviet army were sent to various locations around the country to organize constabulary forces with permission from Soviet military headquarters, and the force was created on October 21, 1945.[11]
The headquarters felt a need for a separate unit for security around railways, and the formation of the unit was announced on January 11, 1946. That unit was activated on August 15 of the same year to supervise existing security forces and creation of the national armed forces.[11]
Military institutes such as the Pyongyang Academy (became No. 2 KPA Officers School in Jan. 1949) and the Central Constabulary Academy (became KPA Military Academy in Dec. 1948) soon followed for education of political and military officers for the new armed forces.
After the military was organized and facilities to educate its new recruits were constructed, the Constabulary Discipline Corps was reorganized into the Korean People's Army General Headquarters. The previously semi-official units became military regulars with distribution of Soviet uniforms, badges, and weapons that followed the inception of the headquarters.[11]
The State Security Department, a forerunner to the Ministry of People's Defense, was created as part of the Interim People's Committee on February 4, 1948. The formal creation of the Korean People's Army was announced on four days later on February 8, the day after the Fourth Plenary Session of the People’s Assembly approved the plan to separate the roles of the military and those of the police,[12] seven months before the government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was proclaimed on September 9, 1948. In addition, the Ministry of State for the People's Armed Forces was established, which controlled a central guard battalion, two divisions, and an independent mixed and combined arms brigade.[11]
Organization[edit]
North Korean soldier, 2005.
Commission and leadership[edit]
The primary path for command and control of the KPA extends through the National Defense Commission which was led by its chairman Kim Jong-il until 2011, to the Ministry of People's Armed Forces and its General Staff Department.[15] From there on, command and control flows to the various bureaus and operational units.

North Korea celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Korean War truce on Saturday (July 27) with a massive military parade trumpeting the revolutionary genius of three generations of leaders that gave it "Victory in the Great Fatherland Liberation War."
Leader Kim Jong-un was joined by Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao on the podium overlooking Pyongyang's main Kim Il Sung square to inspect a massive throng of soldiers in goosestep and a display of weapons including its mid-range missiles.
Kim clad in black exchanged words with Li through an interpreter but did not make remarks at the parade, which appeared to be one of the largest ever put on by the North.
In a speech, Choe Ryong-hae, Kim's main military aide and the chief political operative of the North's 1.2-million-strong army, said the reclusive state sees peace as a top national priority and its military was aimed at safeguarding from outside invasion.
Kim and Li, with the North's top military officials and the youthful leader's uncle Jang Song-thaek, seen as the second most powerful man, watched as the country's missile arsenal paraded past, including the newly developed mid-range Musudan.
Chinese and North Korean ties appeared frayed after Pyongyang conducted missile and nuclear tests in the past year that led to tougher U.N. sanctions also backed by Beijing.
Fighter jets and large military helicopters flew over the square packed with tens of thousands of soldiers, North Korean and foreign veterans of the Korean War and diplomats at the parade under cloudless skies and in sweltering summer heat.
Tens of thousands took part in a civilian parade which Kim watched over, before he and Li toured the balcony waving to wildly clapping attendees.

Conflicts and events[edit]

Before the outbreak of the Korean War, Joseph Stalin equipped the KPA with modern tanks, trucks, artillery, and small arms (at the time, the South Korean Army had nothing remotely comparable either in numbers of troops or equipment). During the opening phases of the Korean War in 1950, the KPA quickly drove South Korean forces south and captured Seoul,
wn.com/North Korea Sends Deadly Message To Obama And US Military
The North Korean Peoples Army puts on a show of force to send a message to Obama and the United States military.
North Korea has staged a huge parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Korean War. Soldiers and military hardware paraded through Pyongyang in a carefully choreographed display. The 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, although the North and South remain technically at war.

The US reported that North Korea mistreated prisoners of war: soldiers were beaten, starved, put to forced labor, marched to death, and summarily executed.
The KPA killed POWs at the battles for Hill 312, Hill 303, the Pusan Perimeter, and Daejeon—discovered during early after-battle mop-up actions by the UN forces. Later, a US Congress war crimes investigation, the United States Senate Subcommittee on Korean War Atrocities of the Permanent Subcommittee of the Investigations of the Committee on Government Operations reported that "... two-thirds of all American prisoners of war in Korea died as a result of war crimes."
Although the Chinese rarely executed prisoners like their Korean counterparts, mass starvation and diseases swept through the Chinese run POW camps during the winter of 1950--51. About 43 percent of all US POWs died during this period. The Chinese defended their actions by stating that all Chinese soldiers during this period were suffering mass starvation and diseases due to the lack of competent logistics system. The UN POWs, however, disputed the claim by pointing out that most of the Chinese camps were located near the easily supplied Sino-Korean border, and that starvation was used to force the prisoners to accept the communism indoctrinations programs, which were running in full swing after the starvation was over.
The North Korean Government reported some 70,000 ROK Army POWs; 8,000 were repatriated. South Korea repatriated 76,000 Korean People's Army POWs. Besides the 12,000 UN Command forces POWs dead in captivity, the KPA might have press-ganged some 50,000 ROK POWs into the North Korean military. Per the South Korean Ministry of Defense, there remained some 560 Korean POWs detained in North Korea in 2008; from 1994 until 2009, some 79 ROK POWs escaped the North.
The North Korean Government denied having POWs from the Korean War, and, via the Korean Central News Agency, reported that the UN forces killed some 33,600 KPA POWs; that on 19 July 1951, in POW Camp No. 62, some 100 POWs were killed as machine-gunnery targets; that on 27 May 1952, in the 77th Camp, Koje Island (now in Geoje), the ROK Army incinerated with flamethrowers some 800 KPA POWs who rejected "voluntary repatriation" south, and instead demanded repatriation north.
In December 1950, National Defense Corps was founded, the soldiers were 406,000 drafted citizens. In the winter of 1951, 50,000 to 90,000 South Korean National Defense Corps soldiers starved to death while marching southward under the Chinese offensive when their commanding officers embezzled funds earmarked for their food. This event is called the National Defense Corps Incident.

Freedom guardians who risked their lives to help injured soldiers
Arirang TV has prepared a program about nurses and nursing officers who took care of wounded soldiers and civilians during the war on the Korean Peninsula. Their devotion and warm hearts made them the unsung heroines of the Korean War.
The devotion and love of white angels
These people risked their lives to save the lives of soldiers, who were like family to them. They put the soldiers′ needs ahead of their own, and did their utmost to help the wounded survive and recover. Even after half a century these nurses still cry.
Efforts of nursing officers dispatched worldwide
When the Korean War broke out, many countries sent their troops to help Korea. But the troops didn′t come alone - they were accompanied by nurses and nursing officers. Six nations including India, Italy and Norway sent their medics. The United States, which dispatched the most troops, also sent more than 500 nursing officers. The American nursing officers had to work under the same conditions as soldiers.
After the soldiers left following the cease-fire, the nurses stayed.
Their devotion continued even after the war.
After the Korean War, the Republic of Korea was completely ruined. Most of the soldiers returned to their home countries, but the nurses stayed in Korea. To them, the war was not over yet. They stayed to take care of wounded soldiers and war orphans. They believed that their duty was to help Koreans regain stability as soon as possible.
Korean nursing officers who carry on the spirit of Florence Nightingale in the world′s war zones
Sixty years after the end of the Korean War, Korea, a country with a tragic history, is contributing to establishing peace around the world. Korean nursing officers visit disputed regions in various parts of the globe to carry on the spirit of Florence Nightingale, just like the nursing officers from other countries did during the Korean War.

The 75-year-old Hwang was last seen in public at a state military funeral in early November.

We′re learning today that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il watched over his military′s test launch of a Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile over the weekend.
A FAILED test launch, that is... according to South Korea′s intelligence agency.
Arirang News′ national defense correspondent Kim Hyun-bin reports.
South Korea′s National Intelligence Service told lawmakers on Monday that North Korea test-fired an SLBM on Saturday, off the east coast city of Wonsan,… but they added the launch is viewed as a failure as the missile′s trajectory could not be traced.
That′s according to head of the parliamentary intelligence committee Joo Ho-young... after being briefed by the NIS.
The intel indicates Pyongyang has yet to master its sought-after missile technology.
The agency added that the North′s leader, Kim Jong-un, is presumed to have watched over the failed launch.
South Korea′s defense ministry says Seoul and Washington are closely watching North Korea′s test launches,… adding that the recent launch contravenes UN Security Council resolutions.
″UN Security Council resolutions prohibit any type of ballistic missile development or launch by North Korea, and Seoul and Washington are closely watching Pyongyang′s movements.″
In May, North Korea claimed it had successfully launched an SLBM but analysts say that the test was more of an ejection than a launch as it only flew about 150 meters.
The nation′s intelligence agency said they were able to trace the path of the trajectory at that time.
Pyongyang′s test fire over the weekend comes a little more than a week before the two Koreas are set to hold vice-ministerial talks at a jointly-run industrial park in the North Korean city of Kaesong on December 11th.

North Korea′s marshal of the Korean People′s Army, Ri Ul-sol... died of cancer over the weekend.
A state funeral in North Korea has sparked another fresh round of purge speculations after one of Kim Jong-un’s most powerful aides was omitted from the official funeral committee list.
Kim Hyun-bin has the latest on the reclusive regime′s movers and shakers.
North Korea′s leader Kim Jong-un has expressed condolences on the death of Ri Ul-sol who died from lung cancer over the weekend.
Ri was marshal of the Korean People′s Army
According to the Korean Central News Agency on Monday, the communist leader visited the mortuary where Ri′s body was held on Sunday.
A state funeral is planned for Wednesday.
Ri held numerous key posts in the KPA and was appointed marshal of the North′s military in 1995
Pyongyang has released the composition of the official 170-strong funeral committee but the list doesn′t include Choe Ryong-hae, the secretary of the Worker′s Party of Korea,,, raising speculation about his fate.
South Korea′s Unification Ministry said on Monday it will analyze the list to see if there are any changes to the communist regime′s power hierarchy and added it is unusual for Choe not to be listed.
Cheong Seong-chang a senior researcher at the Sejong Institute says Choe may have been ousted from the party.
Cheong says there are also other changes in the North′s hierarchy and points to the director of the Korean People′s Army, Hwang Pyong-so, who seems to have moved up one rung on the ladder to become third highest in the communist regime′s hierarchy,

North Korea is preparing for a state funeral this week after one of its iconic military marshals died on Saturday.
Most of the regime′s top officials are part of the committee preparing for the event with the exception of one powerful figure close to leader Kim Jong-un,... which has led to speculation about the figure′s whereabouts.
Kim Ji-yeon tells us more.
94-year-old Ri Ul-sol , an iconic North Korean politician and military official, died of lung cancer on Saturday.
He was part of an anti-Japanese guerrilla movement in the first half of the 20th century,... fighting alongside Kim Il-sung, the founder of the communist state.
Ri assumed a number of key posts after North Korea was established, including that of military marshal.
North Korea will hold a state funeral for Ri on Wednesday, prepared by a committee led by current leader Kim Jong-un.
″He′s trying to demonstrate his leadership by paying his respects to those that are loyal to the Kim family and those who were part of the anti-Japanese guerilla movement.″
Kim′s close aides are part of the 171-person committee, including Hwang Pyong-so, the director of the general political department of the Korean People′s Army.
But what′s striking is the absence of Choe Ryong-hae, the secretary of the ruling Workers′ Party.
Local media outlets in Seoul are speculating about Choe′s whereabouts, including the possibility he′s being reprimanded for work-related negligence.
Choe, who′s known as a second-generation anti-Japanese guerilla, traveled to Beijing as Kim Jong-un′s special envoy to a military parade in September.
He also met with Liu Yunshan , a top Chinese communist party official, in Pyongyang last month.
Kim Ji-yeon, Arirang News.

Meet Kim Jong II, leader of North Korea - a nation imprisoned by poverty and with a population so hungry, people eat bugs and grass. Now this megalomaniacal dictator is holding the civilized world hostage with what many see as a cunning strategy of extortion, threatening to develop an arsenal of nuclear weapons. It's a strategy by which the United States has indicated it cannot abide. In a joint production between the Discovery Channel and the New York Times, go behind the headlines to discover the little-understood origins and almost-stranger-than-truth facets of this dangerous confrontation. See a side of Kim Jong Il rarely revealed - his love of slasher flicks and his affinity for prostitutes - and learn why the United States may have no other palatable option than to play ball with Kim, allowing him to continue his weapons development program. It's quite literally a race against time - if North Korea, as it promises, goes into nuclear production mode, giving Kim as many as 10 nuclear bombs within six months, it would create a destabilizing offensive nuclear capability that could touch off a regional arms race...and even nuclear war. It's a game of international intrigue and high-stakes military strategy. But more importantly, it's the story of destitute North Korea and its bizarre leader, and how he has brought the U.S. and the world face-to-face with the unimaginable.
this film details the history behind what brought North Korea into a nuclear power. In summary, Kim Jong Un came to power after they fought away the Japanese after WWII. The Soviets and the Americans divided the country across the 38 parallel. Kim took the lead to invade the South but after a tug of war between the two nations with China and Soviet Union supporting the North and the US supporting the South, 3 years later, the war concluded back at the original line except with over 1 million casualties in the North and 400k S. Korean and 37k US casualties. There was a period of lagging until Kim Jong Un started the nuclear program in order to gain bargaining power against the US for food aid/other resources. All was well with the Clinton era until Bush came in and scrapped the entire deal. After US invaded Iraq because of WMDs, DPRK decided to arm themselves in fear of what could happen to them.

North Korea Full Length Documentary 2015: Revealed the Secrets of North Korea.
North Korea is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea. The legitimacy of this border is not accepted by either side, as both states claim to be the legitimate government of the entire peninsula.
Over time North Korea has gradually distanced itself from the world Communist movement. Juche, an ideology of national self-reliance, was introduced into the constitution as a "creative application of Marxism–Leninism" in 1972. In 2009, the constitution was amended again, quietly removing the brief references to communism (Chosŏn'gŭl: 공산주의).
North Korea follows Songun, or "military-first" policy. It is the world's most militarized society, with a total of 9,495,000 active, reserve, and paramilitary personnel. Its active duty army of 1.21 million is the 4th largest in the world, after China, the U.S., and India. It also possesses nuclear weapons.

The Korean War (25 June 1950 -- armistice signed 27 July 1953) was a military conflict between South Korea, supported by the United Nations, and North Korea, supported by the People's Republic of China (PRC), with military material aid from the Soviet Union. The war was a result of the physical division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War at the end of World War II.
The Korean peninsula was ruled by Japan from 1910 until the end of World War II. Following the surrender of Japan in 1945, American administrators divided the peninsula along the 38th Parallel, with United States troops occupying the southern part and Soviet troops occupying the northern part.
The failure to hold free elections throughout the Korean Peninsula in 1948 deepened the division between the two sides, and the North established a Communist government. The 38th Parallel increasingly became a political border between the two Koreas. Although reunification negotiations continued in the months preceding the war, tension intensified. Cross-border skirmishes and raids at the 38th Parallel persisted. The situation escalated into open warfare when North Korean forces invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950. It was the first significant armed conflict of the Cold War.
The United Nations, particularly the United States, came to the aid of South Korea in repelling the invasion. A rapid UN counter-offensive drove the North Koreans past the 38th Parallel and almost to the Yalu River, and the People's Republic of China (PRC) entered the war on the side of the North. The Chinese launched a counter-offensive that pushed the United Nations forces back across the 38th Parallel. The Soviet Union materially aided the North Korean and Chinese armies. In 1953, the war ceased with an armistice that restored the border between the Koreas near the 38th Parallel and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a 2.5-mile (4.0 km) wide buffer zone between the two Koreas. Minor outbreaks of fighting continue to the present day.
With both North and South Korea sponsored by external powers, the Korean War was a proxy war. From a military science perspective, it combined strategies and tactics of World War I and World War II: it began with a mobile campaign of swift infantry attacks followed by air bombing raids, but became a static trench war by July 1951.
