Finland (
i/ˈfɪnlənd/; Finnish: Suomi [suomi]; Swedish: Finland [ˈfɪnland]), officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe, a peninsula with Gulf of Finland to the south and Gulf of Bothnia to the west. It has land borders with Sweden and Norway to the north and Russia to the east. Finland is part of the geographic region of Fennoscandia, which also includes Scandinavia and parts of Russia.
Finland's population is 5.5 million (2014), staying roughly on the same level with only about 9% increase in 24 years since the last economic depression in 1990. The majority live in the southern regions. The single largest group of foreigners living in Finland are Russians and Estonians, 36% of all of the foreigners (2014). In terms of area, it is the eighth largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. Finland is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in the capital Helsinki, local governments in 317 municipalities, and an autonomous region, the Åland Islands. Over 1.4 million people live in the Greater Helsinki metropolitan area, which produces a third of the country's GDP. Other large cities include Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Lahti, and Kuopio.

1) Our first impressions of Helsinki included wandering around the city and sampling some Finnish street food in the form of a do it yourself picnic we had on a pedestrian bench.
2) As a day trip we left the urban center of Helsinki via ferry for a wander around quaint Suomenlinna island where we sat down to enjoy ice cream - I tried the Salmiakki flavored one.
3) On a dare I had the opportunity to sample Salmiakki, a black licorice that is popular in Finland and other Scandinavian countries. As a big fan of licorice, I liked it instantly whereas Audrey spat it out immediately.
4) During our stay in Dalsbruk we had the chance to participate in some adventure sports including Sea Kayaking are the Archipelago passing by islands in Kimito where we had a chance to spot wildlife.
5) From Kasnas we took a speed boat to visit Rosala - home to a Viking Center - and from there we continued on to check out Bengtskär Lighthouse.
6) While listening to some great live 70's music we had an opportunity to sample three different kinds of Finnish beer while eating reindeer meat.
7) Having a chance to properly explore Helsinki was a must for both of us. One of the highlights of wandering around the city centre was having a chance to see some of the impressive architecture including Uspenski Cathedral while eating salmon and reindeer meatballs by the Harbor market.
8) During our time in the Finnish Archipelago we were based in the town of Dalsbruk (Swedish name) also called Taalintehdas (Finnish name) a small town home to mostly Swedish speakers also fluent in Finnish.
9) Finally, no trip of ours would be complete without keying in on the local cuisine. Before we left Taalintehdas we check out a super market where we spotted Finnish snacks such as Fazer chocolate, Finnish beer, salmon, Salmiakki, rye bread and more. We're certainly going to miss Finnish cuisine.

A beautiful trip to northern Europe: Helsinki - Turku - travel by snowmobile - Icehotel - Visiting Santa Claus - Rovaniemi

Our route takes us to Helsinki, Turku, the main cultural centre of the year 2011, and on to Oulu. We cross the Baltic Sea on an ice road to Hailuoto, from here we reach Kemi and further up to the far north with the destination Rovaniemi, the town close to the Arctic Circle.
We embark in Rostock, where we take a ferry to Finland. We already cross thick layers of ice.
01:30 Helsinki is the capital with a population of more than 580,000 residents. This beautiful northern city is Finland’s centre politics, economy, culture and faith.
Orthodox Christians have lived in Helsinki since the Russian rule. Their main church is the famous Uspenski Cathedral.
In Helsinki, we visit the senate square with the monument honouring Tsar Alexander the second for his Finland-friendly politics. The square is surrounded by wonderful classical buildings - the cathedral, the old senate house, the main building of the University and to the south the Sederholm House, the oldest building in the city.
03:26 Turku was named Cultural Centre in 2011 (slogan "Turku in flames"). From the 13th century when it was founded until the 19th century it was the most important city in Finland. The cathedral is the most significant example of church architecture in Finland. The best-known grave in the cathedral is the sarcophagus of Queen Karin Mänsdotter. Something really special is the Sunborn Princess Hotel, a converted luxury yacht.
6:15 Ride on a snowmobile through the wide and snow-covered landscape. We fish in ice holes and eat elk stew and reindeer steaks.
08:25 In the vicinity of Oulu we cross the Baltic sea on a layer of ice 70cm thick. On our route to Kemi we stop to look at the island of Hailuoto, connected to the main land by an ice road. On our tour with an icebreaker we stop for a very special attraction for tourists: a fun pool for "ice bathing"
11:45 Back on land we take a ride on a husky sled and let us pull through the deep white snow. In a spaciously designed nature reserve close Rovaniemi live animals like the wolf, the polecat, the lynx or the arctic fox. So we see them in an almost natural environment but still protected. Polar bears, however, are kept separately.
13:07 In our snowmobiles Snowmobiling we arrive at the end of the day at the exceptional ice-hotel. The construction of the hotel begins every year in mid-November and 5-6 weeks later, the hotel can be opened. It is undoubtable a great experience to sllep here. There is no heating and we have outside temperatures up to -40 degrees. In mid-April, we are closing the hotel, the ground starts warming up, then it doesn’t look very nice anymore. We just let it melt, by the end of June is has disappeared. The only thing left to clear up and store for next winter are a few km cables and hundreds of lights.
15:25 We attend a dancing lesson of the Finnish tango, and after this we visit knife maker. In his manufacture he produces the famous Finnish knife Puuko, a knife from elk antlers.
21:41 Certainly, at the end of our tour, there has to be the essential visit to Santa Claus, where we travel to in a sleigh, pulled by reindeer. Inside the building there is a special postal centre, staffed by elves and the legendary time clock. Santa Claus stops time there every year so he can visit all people in one night to deliver their presents.

Helsinki, the Daughter of the Baltic, the Gibraltar of the North, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king Gustav I as a as a trading centre and in 1812, Csar Alexander I made it the capital of the Principality of Finland.
The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.

Two large rivers, the Ounasjoki and the Kemijoki, meet in Rovaniemi from were lumberjacks and gold prospectors once embarked upon their pioneering adventures. Today the city is a centre of tourism. Pajakyla is the home of Santa Claus and is open throughout the year. In the Arctic Circle eight kilometres north of the city is a special attraction that attracts six hundred thousand visitors each year: several tiny log cabins contain Santa’s work rooms and a number of his helpers in traditional Lap costume offer a variety of colourful arts and crafts. In Lapland each season of the year has a special charm. The summer months are warm, in autumn the leaves shine out in golden yellow and in winter the landscape is covered with snow and ice. The hilly landscape of the large Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border and its treeless slopes make it one of the most popular winter ski resorts in Finland. Lapland is a land of countless myths and legends where remoteness, adventure and romance have managed to survive and where the power of nature is still very much alive.

No children, no partner, no work. But you still have to call and check in, of course, to confirm proof of life, your partner tells you with a certain sardonic tone. You obviously have to read emails too, just in case your office forecasts the apocalypse and you aren’t there to say ‘I knew it, I saw it coming’. The modern holiday has become a Living TV documentary, where you board a low-cost flight and head somewhere ‘warm’ to try and get business-grade drunk. There are only a few differences between business drunk and normal drunk: business drunk means it’s still acceptable to drive. Of course, even if you aren’t aiming for a tourist hotspot destination, chances are you will have to encounter the proletariat ‘on tour’ at the airport. Cue the whiskey and narcotics to dull the ache.
So, how does one escape the confines of modern life when you are effectively off-grid, but still maintain some semblance of luxury. The team at Off the Map Travel have it all covered. Off the Map organise tailor-made adventure holidays to Canada, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. They cater for families, couples, groups, honeymooners and, of course, three men in need of an escape into the Arctic Circle.
The first decision was who to take on this adventure. And don’t be fooled: travelling into the Arctic Circle is an adventure. The first thing to consider is accommodation. In many cases, this would be tent-based, so you have to think long and hard about who you can bear to share a tent with. Dr Paul Farrow is my oldest friend, which means there is equal measure of laughter and arguments. When two people have known each other for 25-plus years, you really begin to develop a well-honed arsenal of put downs and snide remarks.
Think of it this way: a friend will calm you down when you’ve been in a fight or you’re angry; a true friend will skip alongside you with a baseball bat singing ‘someone’s gonna get it’. Paul is that kind of friend. I imagined myself backed into a corner in a bitterly cold forest with a pack of feral wolves baying for blood, armed with nothing more than my camera and perhaps a well-scrimshawed knife. Who would you want there to back you up? Luckily, there weren’t many wolves around, our guide Fredrik told me. Only a few bears. Great.
I expect most people like to travel with a group of friends, family, well-known individuals who you know you will have a great time with, and won’t grate on each other. I like to mix this tried-and-tested formula up. James Clarke is The Review’s design writer, arguably wetter behind the ears than a recently-graduated art student when it comes to travel writing. He is our official wood-botherer. A fine drinks’ cabinet, walk-in wardrobe, or perhaps that walnut desk, James is your man. He is also a thrill-seeker and all round weekend warrior. Someone who I know, when presented with a last minute exhilarating opportunity, will drop any and all to attend. Going aurora spotting in the forests of Northern Sweden seemed like it would be right in his grain. Nothing but wood as far as the eye can see, and a fully-charged iPhone with Instagram at the ready.

Columbus is the capital of and the largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The Columbus metropolitan area, which encompasses several counties, is the third largest in Ohio behind Cleveland and Cincinnati. Columbus is home to the world's largest private research and development foundation, the Battelle Memorial Institute; Chemical Abstracts Service, the world's largest clearinghouse of chemical information; NetJets, the world's largest fractional ownership jet aircraft fleet; and The Ohio State University, the nation's largest campus.[18]
In 2011, the city had five corporations in the U.S. Fortune 500, including Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, American Electric Power, Limited Brands, Momentive Specialty Chemicals, and Big Lots.[19] Major foreign corporations operating or with divisions in the city include Germany-based Siemens and Roxane Laboratories, Finland-based Vaisala, Tomasco Mulciber Inc., A Y Manufacturing, Yachiyo of America and US Yachiyo, Inc.

Match made in HEL is a concept created by Finnair, the airline specializing in Asia-Europe connections, and Finavia, the operator of Helsinki Airport, the home hub of Finnair and a key transfer hub for Asia-Europe travel. During Match made in HEL events, the airport serves as the venue for unusual encounters that bring people together and show the airport in a completely new light. Match made in HEL is a concept created by Finnair, the airline specializing in Asia-Europe connections, and Finavia, the operator of Helsinki Airport, the home hub of Finnair and a key transfer hub for Asia-Europe travel. During Match made in HEL events, the airport serves as the venue for unusual encounters that bring people together and show the airport in a completely new light. The Match made in HEL campaign aims to raise awareness of Finnair and Helsinki Airport as the best partners for smooth and fast air connections between Asia and Europe.
