An elite in political and sociological theory, is a small group of people who control a disproportionate amount of wealth or political power.
Mills wrote in his 1957 book The Power Elite that the "elite" are "those political, economic, and military circles, which as an intricate set of overlapping small but dominant groups share decisions having at least national consequences. Insofar as national events are decided, the power elite are those who decide them."
According to Mills, the governing elite in the US primarily draws its members from three areas: (i) the highest political leaders (including the president) and a handful of key cabinet members and close advisers; (ii) major corporate owners and directors; and (iii) high ranking military officers. These groups overlap, and elites tend to circulate from one sector to another, consolidating power as they do so.
Unlike the ruling class, a social formation based on heritage and social ties, the power elite is characterized by the organizational structure through which its wealth is acquired. According to Mills, part of the power elite is "the managerial reorganization of the propertied classes into the more or less unified stratum of the corporate rich." Domhoff further clarified the differences in the two terms: "The upper class as a whole does not do the ruling. Instead, class rule is manifested through the activities of a wide variety of organizations and institutions... Leaders within the upper class join with high-level employees in the organizations they control to make up what will be called the power elite."

The ongoing conflicts between the galactic superpowers provide you with a plentiful supply of different missions across the galaxy to choose from.
Trading is a great way of finding your feet and starting your future fortune.
With 400 billion star systems, there is a lot to explore in Elite: Dangerous. Deep space offers awe-inspiring sights to behold and valuable information to acquire, should you return safely to civilization.
Remember it's a cut throat galaxy out there and combat is a basic skill that you need to survive. It can also provide rich pickings, be it bounty hunting or piracy.
But before you set out to make the galaxy yours, it is advisable to get to grips with your ship and hone your flying and docking skills. The best way to do this is to begin with the single player missions and to watch the tutorials.
Achieving the exalted rank of Elite is possible whichever way you play, be it Trading, Exploration or Combat.

THE GALAXY IS YOURS
Look up to the night sky, as your dreams of exploring the stars and the endless galaxies beyond are made real in Elite: Dangerous. Every dot on the vast cosmic starscape of the Milky Way is a star system and within are an amazing mix of planets, moons, asteroid belts, rings, comets or cosmological marvels waiting to be discovered.
The Milky Way galaxy features 400 billion star systems; each one can be explored. Take a hyperspace jump out into the unknown and bear witness to some of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the universe. You could be raked by x-ray bursts from a pulsar or witness stellar flares and coronal mass ejections up close.
Never before has the beauty and scope of our galaxy been so accurately mapped and so completely realized in a virtual world. Every single one of the stars in the real night sky is present in the virtual one, their planetary systems and moons are there just waiting to be explored.
Look up at the exotic night sky from a distant star - possibly be the very first human to see it, in the knowledge that it is real, that is really what you would see from that distant system. Elite: Dangerous creates a sense of wonder based on what is truly out there.
