Louis Burton Lindley, Jr. (June 29, 1919 – December 8, 1983), better known by his stage name Slim Pickens, was an American rodeo performer and film and television actor. During much of his career Pickens played mainly cowboy roles, and is perhaps best remembered today for his comic roles in Dr. Strangelove and Blazing Saddles.
Pickens was born Louis Burton Lindley, Jr., in Kingsburg, California, the son of Sally Mosher (née Turk) and Louis Bert Lindley, Sr., a Texas-born dairy farmer. Young Lindley was an excellent horse rider from an early age. Known as "Bert" to his family and friends, he grew bored with dairy farming and began to make a few dollars by riding broncs and roping steers in his early teens. His father found out and forbade this activity. Nevertheless, young Lindley went to compete in a rodeo and was told by the doubtful rodeo manager that there would be "slim pickin's" for him. To prevent his father from discovering that he had competed, he entered his name as Slim Pickens and won $400 that afternoon.

The fate of the entombed passengers concerns him none at all. Alvarez is having troubles with his granddaughter Lita who has fallen in love with Rodney Brewster, a Chicago actor and fortune hunter. Alvarez, in Chicago to break up this romance, returns on the doomed Comanche Limited. But, upset by his quarrel with Lita, he gets off the train at a way station and joins Rex and his friends on a three-week cattle drive. Felton steals the train, Brewster moves in to collect on Lita's inheritance (since the missing Alvarez is presumed dead), and Rex has a lot of work to do before everything is solved and straightened out.

FILM DESCRIPTION: In 1964, with the Cuban Missile Crisis fresh in viewers' minds, the Cold War at its frostiest, and the hydrogen bomb relatively new and frightening, Stanley Kubrick dared to make a film about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button -- and played the situation for laughs. I OWN NOTHING IN THIS VIDEO. I always hate it when my favorite track on an album doesn't have a music video, so I pulled this one together from "Dr. Strangelove", "Re-Education Through Labor", "Hammerhead", "Do the Evolution", and "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid."

Watch in High Quality! In PANAVISION, as it was meant to be seen! Here's the scene filmed in Winchester, KY on Sept. 8, 9, and 10, 1966. Featuring Slim Pickens as Jarvis Bates, and Winchester locals as extras. The end of the scene leading into this was filmed on the Valley View ferry, at the end of Tates Creek Road in Lexington. The ferry runs across the Kentucky River between Fayette and Madison counties and, AFAIK, it's still in operation. You can go ride the ferry just like Mordecai and Curley did! Be prepared for a bit of a surprise, however... it's considerably smaller than it looks on screen. An ultra-rare bit of TRIVIA (being mentioned here for the first time!): Another scene was filmed in Winchester at the Brown-Proctor hotel, but was cut from the final version of the...

Slim Pickens shows some hardcore horse riding skill. Roping skill too. And how about that gunshot reaction shot. Reins the horse in, hits his mark, does his goggle eyed bit and tears back out of the shot. Good stuff. Also how he steers when he goes into a turn. Holding the reins wide, helping the horse out by leaning that big upper body into the turn.

One-Eyed Jacks, a 1961 Western, is the only film directed by actor Marlon Brando. The picture was originally planned to be directed by Stanley Kubrick from a screenplay by Sam Peckinpah, but studio disputes led to their replacement by Brando and Guy Trosper. Brando portrays the lead character Rio, and Karl Malden plays his partner "Dad" Longworth. The supporting cast features Katy Jurado, Ben Johnson, and Slim Pickens.
