Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern (Abridged Audiobook)
Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern was the seventh book published by Anne McCaffrey in the Dragonriders of Pern series. With this book, McCaffrey jumped 1000 years back in Pern history to a time memorialized in song and rendered legendary from the standpoint of the previous books. The story involves a deadly disease that nearly wipes out the Pernese population. Moreta is a weyrwoman at Fort Weyr who sets out to save the human population, racing against time itself.
Sometime around 1984 an abridged audiobook version was put out, as read by Jenna Whidden. I found Ms. Whidden's reading style to be far more emotional and well-acted than the dry recitation of the unabridged work, with her excellent voices and characterization accompanied by judicial use of music to enhance the drama. The White dragon by Anne McCaffrey/ Book review
Of the first PERN trilogy, this was the book I was most excited about, it was the one that disappointed me the most. I liked the relationship between Jaxom and his dragon Ruth, but I found his character very bland and one dimensional. The book was also very slow and went over things that had been dealt with in previous novels like the dragon mating process which just kept coming back and I found myself skipping through quite a few pages to get through it.
This novel is one of the founding blocks for dragons in fantasy today and I really wanted to like it but just didn't work for me. I will be continuing my way through Anne McCaffrey's writing, I have the Harper Hall trilogy waiting.

Pared down to it's essential story elements, Moreta in this form just a bit over an hour and a half long, and still manages to capture all the major moments, while enhancing the sense of urgency surrounding the main plot.
With the popularity of unabridged books, this particular version has been impossible to find in any format but the original cassettes. After almost 32 years, I'm assuming it's been abandoned by its owners, and so I am placing a copy here for the rare Pern fan who might want it.

Title: Dragon's Fire
Subtitle: Dragonriders of Pern
Author: Anne McCaffrey, Todd McCaffrey
Narrator: Dick Hill
Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 25 mins
Language: English
Release date: 06-02-08
Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 296 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic
Publisher's Summary:
Halla is one of the children of the Shunned. Though innocent of their parents' crimes, these children have inherited their cruel punishment. Lack of food, shelter, and clothes is their lot; hope is unknown to them. And what future would they hope for? Without a hold to call their own, there will be no protection for them when the lethal Thread inevitably falls again.
Life is particularly tough for Halla. Her family gone, she must fend for herself. Yet despite the brutality of her surroundings, Halla is kind and gentle, devoted to those more helpless than she.
As depraved as Halla is good, Tenim is in league with Tarik, a crooked miner from Camp Natalon, who helps him steal coal in exchange for a cut of the profit. But Tenim soon realizes there is a lot more to be made from firestone, the volatile mineral that enables the dragons of Pern to burn Thread out of the sky. Tenim doesn't care what he has to do, or whom he has to kill, in order to corner the market.
Cristov is Tarik's son. Dishonored by his father's treachery, the boy feels he must make amends, even if it means risking his life by mining the volatile firestone, which detonates on contact with the slightest drop of moisture.
When the last remaining firestone mine explodes in flames, a desperate race begins to find a new deposit of the deadly but essential mineral, for without it there can be no defense against Thread.
Critic Reviews:
"While it allegorizes the risks of mining fossil fuels and the horrors of slave labor, this coming-of-age fantasy offers suitable dragon play for all ages." (Publishers Weekly)
Members Reviews:
Glad this story is going on
Would you listen to Dragon's Fire again? Why?
yes, the pern series is amazing.
What did you like best about this story?
The dragons. I've always loved this series for the amazing dynamic between the dragons and their riders, who doesn't dream of having a psychically linked mythological best friend on a non destroyed and polluted planet!
Have you listened to any of Dick Hills other performances before? How does this one compare?
no
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes
Any additional comments?
Todd is not as talented as his mother but he still does a good job. I try to keep him seperate in my mind from his mother, and not judge him too harshly. I'm sure his mother could never have completely shared the pern in her mind with anyone no matter how hard she tried. He does a fantastic job of keeping us fed with pern stories and I for one am so glad that he continued it as I was just not ready to let pern go!
Sorry, Todd, you don't measure up
Would you ever listen to anything by Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey again?
I enjoyed the early Pern Books wholeheartedly and adored the characters and plot points. Those with Todd tend to fade from my memory.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Dick Hill?
I would not be swayed to by a book it saw his name, nor would I avoid it. He is adequate.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Hope it would get better..... Disappointment it did not.
Any additional comments?
