Mount Adams (Washington)
Mount Adams, known by some Native American tribes as Pahto or Klickitat, is a potentially active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range. It is the second-highest mountain in the U.S. state of Washington, trailing only Mount Rainier. Adams is a member of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, and is one of the arc's largest volcanoes, located in a remote wilderness approximately 34 miles (55 km) east of Mount St. Helens. The Mount Adams Wilderness comprises the upper and western part of the volcano's cone. The eastern side of the mountain is part of the Yakama Nation.
Adams' asymmetrical and broad body rises 1.5 miles (2.4 km) above the Cascade crest. Its nearly flat summit was formed as a result of cone-building eruptions from separated vents. Air travelers flying the busy routes above the area sometimes confuse Mount Adams with nearby Mount Rainier, which has a similar flat-topped shape.
The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the western flank of the mountain. Although Adams has not erupted in over 1,000 years, it is not considered extinct.

The most underrated hiking trail in Washington State? The Sleeping Beauty trail in the Mount Adams wilderness. Only 1.4 miles to the top, but elevation is the name of the game. A leg burning, 1500 vertical feet, for my 4th of July hike to the most incredible AND underrated views Mt. Adams has to offer. The Indian Heaven wilderness & the Gifford Pinchot National forest spread out below the viewpoint.. and right in our face is Mnt Adams. I summited Mount Adams in July via the South Climb Trail. Follow three mountaineers summit of Mount Adams over two days. On Day 1, we hiked from the South Climb Trail parking lot to Lunch Counter (base camp).On Day 2, we started our ascent at 3:15am to the Mount Adams summit. Mount Adams has an elevation of 12,280 feet. The conditions were great and the weather was warm. We even saw a mountain goat stroll through camp. In this 20 June 2022 video, I ascend about 6,700 ft to summit and splitboard down from Mt Adams' 12,281 ft apex. This 12 mile round trip route (Lunch Counter Approach) begins at the South Climb Trail 183 around 5,500 ft elevation. Mt. Adams is an active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range, and it is Washington States’s 2nd highest peak behind Mt Rainier. Dubbed “Washington’s Forgotten Peak,” it is more remote and inaccessible than the surrounding volcanoes such as Mt. St. Helens, Hood, or Rainier—and it is more difficult to catch a glimpse of it from metropolitan centers. The mountain presents a fantastic 2 day climb up to its peak at 12,280 ft above sea level.

The most underrated hiking trail in Washington State? The Sleeping Beauty trail in the Mount Adams wilderness. Only 1.4 miles to the top, but elevation is the name of the game. A leg burning, 1500 vertical feet, for my 4th of July hike to the most incredible AND underrated views Mt. Adams has to offer.
The Indian Heaven wilderness & the Gifford Pinchot National forest spread out below the viewpoint.. and right in our face is Mnt Adams. Also featuring beautiful views of Mnt Hood, Mnt Saint Helens, and a peak of Mnt Rainier.
This hiking trail spends 3/4 of the way up in dense forest. As the trees thin out, we climb up rocky switchbacks to reach the ridge line. The leveled spot where an old fire lookout used to sit.
Along the way I tell you the native story of Sleeping Beauty, & why I learned to solo hike in celebration of Independence Day!

I summited Mount Adams in July via the South Climb Trail. Follow three mountaineers summit of Mount Adams over two days. On Day 1, we hiked from the South Climb Trail parking lot to Lunch Counter (base camp).On Day 2, we started our ascent at 3:15am to the Mount Adams summit. Mount Adams has an elevation of 12,280 feet. The conditions were great and the weather was warm. We even saw a mountain goat stroll through camp. In this 20 June 2022 video, I ascend about 6,700 ft to summit and splitboard down from Mt Adams' 12,281 ft apex. This 12 mile round trip route (Lunch Counter Approach) begins at the South Climb Trail 183 around 5,500 ft elevation.
Although, Mt Adams is Washington's 2nd tallest volcano, the standard route up the south ridge is very straight forward.

Mount Adams (Washington)
Mount Adams, known by some Native American tribes as Pahto or Klickitat, is a potentially active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range. It is the second-highest mountain in the U.S. state of Washington, trailing only Mount Rainier. Adams is a member of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, and is one of the arc's largest volcanoes, located in a remote wilderness approximately 34 miles (55 km) east of Mount St. Helens. The Mount Adams Wilderness comprises the upper and western part of the volcano's cone. The eastern side of the mountain is part of the Yakama Nation.
Adams' asymmetrical and broad body rises 1.5 miles (2.4 km) above the Cascade crest. Its nearly flat summit was formed as a result of cone-building eruptions from separated vents. Air travelers flying the busy routes above the area sometimes confuse Mount Adams with nearby Mount Rainier, which has a similar flat-topped shape.
The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the western flank of the mountain. Although Adams has not erupted in over 1,000 years, it is not considered extinct.
