A former Crip gang leader is being heralded as a hero after body-slamming a man allegedly high on PCP who was set to attack a Dallas police officer.
"I think he's a hero," bystander Wendy Poole, who claims she was also attacked during the debacle, told CBS 11 News in Dallas.
The moment was caught on video obtained exclusively by CBS 11 News and shows Officer Billy Taylor backing up in the middle of the street as the suspect threateningly walks toward him.
That's when Charles "Chucky" Alexander, 45, who was watching from outside of a nearby homeless shelter, decided to take action.
"I knew there was something I had to do," Alexander told the news outlet. "The officer had his baton out but it wasn't doing any good. I mean, this guy was really PC'd out."
"He really went ballistic; he was going after anyone who went in front of him," Alexander added.
Footage shows Alexander run up, pull the suspect off Taylor and then use the force of his body to send the attacker reeling to the ground, just as two squad cars pull up.
The Dallas Police Department declined to comment. Taylor reportedly is on medical leave, recovering from dislocated fingers and other injuries. Alexander told CBS 11 the officer made sure to thank him before leaving the scene.
Dallas City Council Member Dwaine Caraway told The Huffington Post that the city plans to recognize Alexander for his actions.
"You know, you have people that step in to stop situations and sometimes it makes a difference. It's heroic, it's courageous, it's helped save folks lives," Caraway said in a phone interview.
Alexander, a reformed gang member, does not have a home but works day jobs around town. Caraway believes Alexander is a prime example of how people can change. "What could come out of this, [what] could signal messages to Crips and gang leaders, is that doing good things are better than doing bad things," he said.
"If we had more folks like [Alexander], who had that change of heart, how much better would our country would be?" Carraway added.

A former Crip gang leader is being heralded as a hero after body-slamming a man allegedly high on PCP who was set to attack a Dallas police officer.
"I think he's a hero," bystander Wendy Poole, who claims she was also attacked during the debacle, told CBS 11 News in Dallas.
The moment was caught on video obtained exclusively by CBS 11 News and shows Officer Billy Taylor backing up in the middle of the street as the suspect threateningly walks toward him.
That's when Charles "Chucky" Alexander, 45, who was watching from outside of a nearby homeless shelter, decided to take action.
"I knew there was something I had to do," Alexander told the news outlet. "The officer had his baton out but it wasn't doing any good. I mean, this guy was really PC'd out."
"He really went ballistic; he was going after anyone who went in front of him," Alexander added.
Footage shows Alexander run up, pull the suspect off Taylor and then use the force of his body to send the attacker reeling to the ground, just as two squad cars pull up.
The Dallas Police Department declined to comment. Taylor reportedly is on medical leave, recovering from dislocated fingers and other injuries. Alexander told CBS 11 the officer made sure to thank him before leaving the scene.
Dallas City Council Member Dwaine Caraway told The Huffington Post that the city plans to recognize Alexander for his actions.
"You know, you have people that step in to stop situations and sometimes it makes a difference. It's heroic, it's courageous, it's helped save folks lives," Caraway said in a phone interview.
Alexander, a reformed gang member, does not have a home but works day jobs around town. Caraway believes Alexander is a prime example of how people can change. "What could come out of this, [what] could signal messages to Crips and gang leaders, is that doing good things are better than doing bad things," he said.
"If we had more folks like [Alexander], who had that change of heart, how much better would our country would be?" Carraway added.

Deadly Oregon Highway Shootout Ends With Death Of Gunman John Van Allen

A former Crip gang leader is being heralded as a hero after body-slamming a man allegedly high on PCP who was set to attack a Dallas police officer.
"I think he's a hero," bystander Wendy Poole, who claims she was also attacked during the debacle, told CBS 11 News in Dallas.
The moment was caught on video obtained exclusively by CBS 11 News and shows Officer Billy Taylor backing up in the middle of the street as the suspect threateningly walks toward him.
That's when Charles "Chucky" Alexander, 45, who was watching from outside of a nearby homeless shelter, decided to take action.
"I knew there was something I had to do," Alexander told the news outlet. "The officer had his baton out but it wasn't doing any good. I mean, this guy was really PC'd out."
"He really went ballistic; he was going after anyone who went in front of him," Alexander added.
Footage shows Alexander run up, pull the suspect off Taylor and then use the force of his body to send the attacker reeling to the ground, just as two squad cars pull up.
The Dallas Police Department declined to comment. Taylor reportedly is on medical leave, recovering from dislocated fingers and other injuries. Alexander told CBS 11 the officer made sure to thank him before leaving the scene.
Dallas City Council Member Dwaine Caraway told The Huffington Post that the city plans to recognize Alexander for his actions.
"You know, you have people that step in to stop situations and sometimes it makes a difference. It's heroic, it's courageous, it's helped save folks lives," Caraway said in a phone interview.
Alexander, a reformed gang member, does not have a home but works day jobs around town. Caraway believes Alexander is a prime example of how people can change. "What could come out of this, [what] could signal messages to Crips and gang leaders, is that doing good things are better than doing bad things," he said.
"If we had more folks like [Alexander], who had that change of heart, how much better would our country would be?" Carraway added.

CAUGHT ON TAPE: Officer Shot In The Head During Shootout, El Cajon
EL CAJON - August 21, 2011 - An El Cajon Police officer is shot right in front of a news camera. The entire incident is caught on camera including the shots fired, officer rescue, SWAT standoff, house fire, helicopter water drops and more. The suspect, Kevin Collier, shot his 1-year old daughter and his mother-in-law. Police arrived and surrounded the home (including our photog). Officers were then met with gunfire from the suspect who had a rifle. Officer Jarred Slocum was leaning over the bed of a pickup truck with only his head exposed. He was struck in the left temple and the bullet exited the rear of his skull. He was NOT shot in the neck, as it appears and was initially perceived in the heat of the moment. Description:
Wet Head is a water roulette game. Fill Wet Head with cold water, strap on the water filled Wet Head, spin the spinner and follow the instructions on the spinner based on where the arrow lands. spin the top and pull out any one of the rods. If you stay dry, pass Wet Head to the next player. Make Wet Head the perfect game for any season by adjusting the amount of water you use to play. Fill Wet Head to brim when outside in the summer heat. Bring the fun indoors for winter by using a minimal amount of water. Summer or winter, the question remains the same, "Will you be the next Wet Head'".

About TD Jakes
In 1994, T.D. Jakes Ministries was established as a non-profit organization that produced televised sermons and conferences. From 1995 to 1996, Jakes hosted "Get Ready," a weekly radio and television show with national distribution through syndication.
In 1996 Jakes, his wife, children, and a staff of 50 employees relocated to Dallas, Texas, where Jakes founded the Potter's House, a non-denominational megachurch. Located on a 34-acre hilltop campus, the Potter's House features a 5,000-seat auditorium, as well as offices for employees and staff. Between 1996 and 1998, church membership grew from 7,000 congregants to 14,000.

In July 2015, Tegna, Inc. and Debmar-Mercury announced that a new secular talk show hosted by Jakes would air as a test run on Tegna stations in Atlanta, Cleveland, Dallas, and Minneapolis from August 17 to September 11, 2015.

EL CAJON - August 21, 2011 - An El Cajon Police officer is shot right in front of a news camera. The entire incident is caught on camera including the shots fired, officer rescue, SWAT standoff, house fire, helicopter water drops and more.
The suspect, Kevin Collier, shot his 1-year old daughter and his mother-in-law. Police arrived and surrounded the home (including our photog). Officers were then met with gunfire from the suspect who had a rifle. Officer Jarred Slocum was leaning over the bed of a pickup truck with only his head exposed. He was struck in the left temple and the bullet exited the rear of his skull. He was NOT shot in the neck, as it appears and was initially perceived in the heat of the moment. The suspect then set the house on fire before shooting himself. The fire department could not approach the home because officers could not confirm if the suspect was dead or not. Firefighters are not going to walk up to a home with the possibility of a man inside with a rifle. Officers requested Mercy Air for transport, but instead took the wounded officer by ground in a patrol car as it would be quicker. This was on a dead-end street, so the rescue of having to pass the line of fire was incredibly risky. A gas line explodes at one point (bluish smoke). SWAT set up and worked with the fire department to help slow the rate of spread of the fire. Two helicopters began water drops, which is unheard of for a structure fire, but it was the most practical and safest way to control the flames. Officer Slocum is doing well but has decided to "medically retire" from the El Cajon Police Department, move, and go back to college. The officer who was with him, Officer Tim McFarland, was a rookie at the time and was being trained by Slocum. Officer Slocum's wound, although very serious, had very very little blood loss. So for those appauled that none of us applied pressure, quite frankly it wasn't necessary and it's easy to judge what one would do while sitting behind a computer. The bigger threat was the active shooter vs only a handful of officers. And for all you anti-cop commenters, keep in mind, officers are still people with families. The people in this video are heroes who were up against a crazed man set on death and destruction.
Some important points:
* The officer was shot in the left temple, not the neck. Period. I was there. I shot the video. It looks like he was shot in the neck, but he was in shock and holding the wrong area. You can see the exit wound in the back of his head in the video. See the followup interview with both officers if you still don't believe he was shot in the temple.
* The officer was actually shot 1/2 second before the video begins. Enable HD and pause the first few frames. You see him getting up from the chain link fence. He was thrown back from the force of the shot and bounced off the springy fence. He then gets up and returns fire.
* This is not fake. Google "Jarred Slocum" "Tim McFarland" "Prince St" etc and you will find that every major media agency in the world ran this story. To fake such a video would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. http://www.google.com/search?q=8/21/2011+shooting

Some important points:
* The officer was shot in the left temple, not the neck. Period. I was there. I shot the video. It looks like he was shot in the neck, but he was in shock and holding the wrong area. You can see the exit wound in the back of his head in the video. See the followup interview with both officers if you still don't believe he was shot in the temple.
* The officer was actually shot 1/2 second before the video begins. Enable HD and pause the first few frames. You see him getting up from the chain link fence. He was thrown back from the force of the shot and bounced off the springy fence. He then gets up and returns fire.
* This is not fake. Google "Jarred Slocum" "Tim McFarland" "Prince St" etc and you will find that every major media agency in the world ran this story. To fake such a video would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. http://www.google.com/search?q=8/21/2011+shooting
* The suspect lit the house on fire, then shot himself. Police did not burn the house down.
