It wasn't easy to pick this topic, but I believe that America's 40-year policy of mass incarceration is deeply unethical, not very effective, and promotes the security of the few at the expense of the many.
It's hard for me, as a person who was born into privilege, to imagine the challenges convicted criminals face, often for crimes that are utterly non-violent.
If you're feeling like you want to do something about this, I'm mostly just making this video as an informational resource and to encourage people to think of felons not as bad, scary people but just as people.

According to a September 2014 study by the International Center for Prison Studies, nearly a third of all female prisoners worldwide are incarcerated in the United States.[2] The total population of females incarcerated in US prisons and jails in 2013 was 213,700 (males 2,492,400) – 9.3% of the total. Between 2000 and 2010 the number of males in prison grew by 1.4% per annum, while the number of females grew by 1.9% per annum. From 2010 to 2013 the numbers fell for both genders, -0.8% for males and -0.5 for females. For jails the figures for 2000–10 are 1.8% for males and 2.6% for females, while for 2010–13 they are -1.4% for males and 3.4% for females.[3] Over this period the female proportion of the incarcerated population has been increasing, at least partly due to compulsory sentencing.
Hispanic women are incarcerated nearly twice the rate of white women, and black women are incarcerated at four times the rate of white women.[4] Within the US, the rate of female incarceration increased five fold in a two decade span ending in 2001; the increase occurred because of increased prosecutions and convictions of offenses related to recreational drugs, increases in the severity of offenses, and a lack of community sanctions and treatment for women who violate drug laws.[5] Tough-on-crime legislation and legislation associated with the war on drugs have been connected to the increasing rate of the incarceration of women of color from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This rapid boom of female prisoners is something the primarily male-dominated prison system was not structurally prepared for and, as a result, female prisons often lack the resources to accommodate the specific social, mental, healthcare needs of these women.

Iyanla: Fix My Life
Iyanla: Fix My Life is an American reality television series hosted by life coach and relationship expert Iyanla Vanzant on the Oprah Winfrey Network. A sneak preview episode aired on June 2, 2012, and the series debuted with a two-part series premiere on September 15 and September 16, 2012.
Background
Iyanla: Fix My Life features Vanzant helping people overcome difficulties in their lives. Each episode focuses on a specific problem posed by the story of one guest (or group of guests), with pre-taped production pieces at the guest's home and interviews with Iyanla that provide commentary throughout the show. Scared Straight!
Scared Straight! is a 1978 documentary directed by Arnold Shapiro. Narrated by Peter Falk, the subject of the documentary is a group of juvenile delinquents and their three-hour session with actual convicts. Filmed at Rahway State Prison, a group of inmates known as the "lifers" berate, scream at, and terrify the young offenders in an attempt to "scare them straight," (hence the film's title), so that those teenagers will avoid prison life.
The documentary aired on television in the late 1970s, uncensored; it marked the first time that the words "fuck" and "shit" were broadcast on many networks. Some broadcasters (an example being CFQC, a CTV Network affiliate in Canada) added locally produced segments in which experts discussed both the content of the documentary, and the rationale behind airing it uncensored.
The cast includes a drug dealer and counterfeit document manufacturer from Westchester County (Mikie C), a gang member from Jersey City (Jerome Watts), an arsonist and bomb builder from Bridgeport (Jon Shipiro), the son of a Mafia informant (Carlo Gallo), and a 17-year-old chop shop parts dealer and car thief from the Bronx (Jesus Rodriguez).

According to a September 2014 study by the International Center for Prison Studies, nearly a third of all female prisoners worldwide are incarcerated in the United States.[2] The total population of females incarcerated in US prisons and jails in 2013 was 213,700 (males 2,492,400) – 9.3% of the total. Between 2000 and 2010 the number of males in prison grew by 1.4% per annum, while the number of females grew by 1.9% per annum. From 2010 to 2013 the numbers fell for both genders, -0.8% for males and -0.5 for females. For jails the figures for 2000–10 are 1.8% for males and 2.6% for females, while for 2010–13 they are -1.4% for males and 3.4% for females.[3] Over this period the female proportion of the incarcerated population has been increasing, at least partly due to compulsory sentencing. Hispanic women are incarcerated nearly twice the rate of white women, and black women are incarcerated at four times the rate of white women.[4] Within the US, the rate of female incarceration increased five fold in a two decade span ending in 2001; the increase occurred because of increased prosecutions and convictions of offenses related to recreational drugs, increases in the severity of offenses, and a lack of community sanctions and treatment for women who violate drug laws.[5] Tough-on-crime legislation and legislation associated with the war on drugs have been connected to the increasing rate of the incarceration of women of color from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This rapid boom of female prisoners is something the primarily male-dominated prison system was not structurally prepared for and, as a result, female prisons often lack the resources to accommodate the specific social, mental, healthcare needs of these women. -

It wasn't easy to pick this topic, but I believe that America's 40-year policy of mass incarceration is deeply unethical, not very effective, and promotes the security of the few at the expense of the many.
It's hard for me, as a person who was born into privilege, to imagine the challenges convicted criminals face, often for crimes that are utterly non-violent.
If you're feeling like you want to do something about this, I'm mostly just making this video as an informational resource and to encourage people to think of felons not as bad, scary people but just as people.

According to a September 2014 study by the International Center for Prison Studies, nearly a third of all female prisoners worldwide are incarcerated in the United States.[2] The total population of females incarcerated in US prisons and jails in 2013 was 213,700 (males 2,492,400) – 9.3% of the total. Between 2000 and 2010 the number of males in prison grew by 1.4% per annum, while the number of females grew by 1.9% per annum. From 2010 to 2013 the numbers fell for both genders, -0.8% for males and -0.5 for females. For jails the figures for 2000–10 are 1.8% for males and 2.6% for females, while for 2010–13 they are -1.4% for males and 3.4% for females.[3] Over this period the female proportion of the incarcerated population has been increasing, at least partly due to compulsory sentencing.
Hispanic women are incarcerated nearly twice the rate of white women, and black women are incarcerated at four times the rate of white women.[4] Within the US, the rate of female incarceration increased five fold in a two decade span ending in 2001; the increase occurred because of increased prosecutions and convictions of offenses related to recreational drugs, increases in the severity of offenses, and a lack of community sanctions and treatment for women who violate drug laws.[5] Tough-on-crime legislation and legislation associated with the war on drugs have been connected to the increasing rate of the incarceration of women of color from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This rapid boom of female prisoners is something the primarily male-dominated prison system was not structurally prepared for and, as a result, female prisons often lack the resources to accommodate the specific social, mental, healthcare needs of these women.

According to a September 2014 study by the International Center for Prison Studies, nearly a third of all female prisoners worldwide are incarcerated in the United States.[2] The total population of females incarcerated in US prisons and jails in 2013 was 213,700 (males 2,492,400) – 9.3% of the total. Between 2000 and 2010 the number of males in prison grew by 1.4% per annum, while the number of females grew by 1.9% per annum. From 2010 to 2013 the numbers fell for both genders, -0.8% for males and -0.5 for females. For jails the figures for 2000–10 are 1.8% for males and 2.6% for females, while for 2010–13 they are -1.4% for males and 3.4% for females.[3] Over this period the female proportion of the incarcerated population has been increasing, at least partly due to compulsory sentencing.

In Episode 6 of Last Chance High, Cortez makes an emotional trip to the prison where his father is serving a life sentence for murder. Deeply affected by the visit, Cortez begins taking his medicine regularly, and soon shocks his teachers with a new sense of self-control and openness.
On Chicago's West Side, there is a school for the city's most at-risk youth — the Moses Montefiore Academy. Most of the students at Montefiore have been kicked out of other schools for aggressive behavior, and many have been diagnosed with emotional disorders.
Last Chance High takes viewers inside Montefiore's classrooms, and into the homes of students who are one mistake away from being locked up or committed to a mental hospital.

When teaching K-5 level math in the New York State prison system, this speaker learned that many of the inmates in his class couldn't read or do simple arithmetic. This talk explores the impact of visual illiteracy and a possible solution. Dr. Edd Schneider began his professional career teaching in the New York State prison system before returning to college to get his Ph.D. from Indiana University. As an Assistant Professor in the Communication Management and Design program at Ithaca College, he teaches courses on visual communication and the design of new media. Don Hutto detention center outside Austin in order to pressure her to recant her allegations that she was sexually assaulted by a guard. She fled El Salvador to escape sexual persecution as a lesbian, and has been detained eight months. This comes as the FBI is conducting a civil rights investigation into the alleged abuse. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world with more than two million Americans incarcerated today. To end mass incarceration, access to education must be expanded. Structural barriers limit access to opportunity for marginalized communities, including inadequate educational experiences, insufficient job training, and institutional bias. We need to rethink our approach to reentry to enable formerly incarcerated people to find career-pathway jobs, pursue educational opportunities, and secure housing. Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso remains incarcerated
The arrest of the Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso by the Hawks in Port Elizabeth earlier in 2017 on charges of human trafficking a schedule 6 offence grabbed the interest of the nation. The self-proclaimed prophet and leader of the Jesus Dominion International church remains in custody as two attempts for bail, due to the nature of the charges have failed. He is facing a total of 48 charges. These include sexual assault, human trafficking, rape and an additional five charges relating to the contravention of the Immigration Act. The arrest of the Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso by the Hawks in Port Elizabeth earlier in 2017 on charges of human trafficking a schedule 6 offence grabbed the interest of the nation. The self-proclaimed prophet and leader of the Jesus Dominion International church remains in custody as two attempts for bail, due to the nature of the charges have failed. He is facing a total of 48 charges. These include sexual assault, human trafficking, rape and an additional five charges relating to the contravention of the Immigration Act. Free Minds is a Washington, DC nonprofit that introduces youth, who are incarcerated as adults, to the transformative power of books and creative writing. Through mentoring and supportive services throughout their incarceration and reentry, Free Minds inspires these youth to see their potential and achieve new educational and career goals. According to a September 2014 study by the International Center for Prison Studies, nearly a third of all female prisoners worldwide are incarcerated in the United States.[2] The total population of females incarcerated in US prisons and jails in 2013 was 213,700 (males 2,492,400) – 9.3% of the total. Between 2000 and 2010 the number of males in prison grew by 1.4% per annum, while the number of females grew by 1.9% per annum. From 2010 to 2013 the numbers fell for both genders, -0.8% for males and -0.5 for females. For jails the figures for 2000–10 are 1.8% for males and 2.6% for females, while for 2010–13 they are -1.4% for males and 3.4% for females.[3] Over this period the female proportion of the incarcerated population has been increasing, at least partly due to compulsory sentencing.
Hispanic women are incarcerated nearly twice the rate of white women, and black women are incarcerated at four times the rate of white women.[4] Within the US, the rate of female incarceration increased five fold in a two decade span ending in 2001; the increase occurred because of increased prosecutions and convictions of offenses related to recreational drugs, increases in the severity of offenses, and a lack of community sanctions and treatment for women who violate drug laws.[5] Tough-on-crime legislation and legislation associated with the war on drugs have been connected to the increasing rate of the incarceration of women of color from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This rapid boom of female prisoners is something the primarily male-dominated prison system was not structurally prepared for and, as a result, female prisons often lack the resources to accommodate the specific social, mental, healthcare needs of these women.

Using the research of Presidential Professor of Sociology, Dr. Susan Sharp, Amina sought to make a documentary film the would expose Oklahoma's #1 rate for female incarceration in the world.
Over 28,000 children are currently displaced by the incarceration of a parent in Oklahoma. 80% of Oklahoma's female offenders are in prison for non-violent, drug relatable crimes. 80% are also mothers. Rarely do any of them have access to treatment. Many of them will leave prison facing harsher conditions than they did before the entered, with responsibility of caring for their children.
WOMEN BEHIND BARS seeks to answer the cause of the rising epidemic of female incarceration in the United States by taking viewers inside of Oklahoma's female prison facilities and face to face with the women and children most affected by this issue.

Pray for their protection while incarcerated, prayer for their families that they separated from; praying for their parents who may be carrying guilt and the burden of their sons & daughters locked up. Praying prison ministries to continue sharing the Good News of Christ, for their continued spiritual growth after parole/release back into society.
Also, prayer for those who are spiritually bound, held captive as slaves to sin and evil; praying for their release through power of the Gospel!

Brown, Executive Director of Girls & Gangs on Thursday, February 17, 2011 discussing her work with women in jail. Aiming to empower disenfranchised women caught in the penal system's revolving door, Ms. Jones' Medea Project capitalizes on the open-ended nature of theater production to uncover some of the root causes that lead women into the criminal justice system. The typically complex findings of this process of inquiry are then staged before an audience of civilians where all involved have the opportunity to reach a deeper understanding of the issues at hand. At its core, The Medea Project illustrates the intimate link between the arts and humanities with healing practices while rescuing the neglected stories of marginalized women in the hopes of reintegrating them back into their communities.
