Xinjiang (Uyghur: شىنجاڭ, ULY: Shinjang; Mandarin pronunciation: [ɕíntɕjɑ́ŋ]; Chinese: 新疆; pinyin: Xīnjiāng), officially the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is an autonomous region of China in the northwest of the country. It is the largest Chinese administrative division, the 8th largest country subdivision in the world, spanning over 1.6 million km2. It contains the disputed territory of Aksai Chin administered by China. Xinjiang borders the countries of Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. The extremely rugged Karakoram, Kunlun, and Tian Shan mountain ranges occupy much of Xinjiang's borders, as well as its western and southern regions. Xinjiang also borders Tibet Autonomous Region and the provinces of Gansu and Qinghai. The most well-known route of the historical Silk Road ran through the territory from the east to its northwestern border. In recent decades, abundant oil and mineral reserves have been found in Xinjiang, and it is currently China's largest natural gas-producing region.
Autonomous region is a designation for some types of autonomous administrative divisions.
Sixty years after Xinjiang became an autonomous region under the People’s Republic of China, we take a look back and try to unravel its rich cultural heritage, the move towards modernism, and the fact that the region’s GDP has increased over a hundred fold since 1955. We also discuss the ethnic and political problems the region has seen with Professor Wang Hui from the School of Humanities at Tsinghua University. Significant communities of Uyghur-speakers are located in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Uyghur is an official language of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The term "East Turkestan" is inextricably linked with politics. In general, most of the toponyms for places in Central Asia do not reflect the region's diversity. The history of Xinjiang in particular is contested between the government of China and Uyghur separatists, as is which name to use "Xin...

Read more: http://www.farwestchina.com/2016/05/xinjiang-road-trip-highway-216.html There are a number of ways to get from Urumqi to Korla in China's Xinjiang region. You can fly, take a train...or drive. Over the past few years the government has invested heavily into infrastructure, building smooth highways that go around the TianShan mountains to make the trip between the two cities quick and easy. Before this highway, however, drivers had to take the unpaved Highway 216 which climbs over the TianShan instead of around it. It's a shorter route but it takes longer. Thankfully, the scenery more than makes up for the trouble. Watch as Josh takes us on a dr...
