It is Pakistan's centre of banking, industry, economic activity and trade and is home to Pakistan's largest corporations, including those involved in textiles, shipping, automotive industry, entertainment, the arts, fashion, advertising, publishing, software development and medical research. The city is a hub of higher education in South Asia and the Muslim world. Karachi is also ranked as a beta world city. It was the capital of Pakistan until Islamabad was constructed as a capital to spread development evenly across the country and to prevent it from being concentrated in Karachi. Karachi is the location of the Port of Karachi and Port Bin Qasim, two of the region's largest and busiest ports. After the independence of Pakistan, the city population increased dramatically when hundreds of thousands of Muslim Muhajirs from India and from other parts of South Asia came to settle in Karachi. The city is located on the Arabian Sea coastline. It is also known as the Uroos ul Bilaad "The Bride of the Cities" and the "City of Lights", for its liveliness,[citation needed] and the "City of the Quaid", having been the birth and burial place of Quaid-e-Azam, the Great Leader, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, who made the city his home after Pakistan's independence from the British Raj on 14 August 1947. Faisalabad formerly Lyallpur, is the third most populous city in Pakistan after Karachi and Lahore. It is the second largest city in the province of Punjab after Lahore, and a major industrial center. It was one of the first planned cities within British India. Pricewaterhouse Coopers has projected Faisalabad's GDP to be around USD $87 billion by 2025. The city is also referred to as the "Manchester of Pakistan".[9] Faisalabad contributes over 20% to Pakistan's GDP. Faisalabad is home to the University of Agriculture, Government College University as well as the Ayub Agricultural Research Institute and National Textile University. The city has its own cricket team, Faisalabad Wolves, which is based at the Iqbal Stadium. There are several other sports teams that compete internationally, including hockey and snooker as well as other sporting events. The surrounding countryside, irrigated by the lower Chenab River, produces cotton, wheat, sugarcane, vegetables and fruits. The city is an industrial centre with major railway repair yards, engineering works, and mills that process sugar, flour, and oil seed. Faisalabad is a major producer of superphosphates, cotton and silk textiles, hosiery, dyes, industrial chemicals, beverages, apparels, pulp and paper, printing, agricultural equipment, and ghee (clarified butter). The city also has a major dry port and international airport. Karakoram Express (Urdu: قراقرم ایکسپریس ‎) is a daily express train service between Karachi and Lahore in Pakistan. The train is named after the Karakoram mountain range spanning the borders between Pakistan, India and China. Karakoram Express is one of the fastest and most popular trains in Pakistan. It was inaugurated on 14 August 2002 with imported Chinese coaches by the then Federal railways minister Lt-Gen Javed Ashraf Qazi (retired).
