St Lucia was the 5th port of call on the Southern Caribbean cruise aboard Carnival Glory.. The island's beauty has earned it the nickname "Helen of the West Indies" and I would consider this to be one of my favourite islands that we visited on our cruise.
The island is quite mountainous, owing to its volcanic features in particular the two peaks that rise from the sea- Gros Piton and Petit Piton (2,619ft and 2,461ft respectively).
St Lucia is still geologically active and boasts the world's only 'Drive-in' Volcano at La Soufriere, also known as the Sulphur Springs due to the multitude of thermal springs in the area- some are far to hot to bathe in, however nearby there is a bath house whereby the natural springs are at a more tolerable level, in addition you can also take a hot mud bath.
The beaches are not the usual crisp white sand you see in other Caribbean islands, but has more of a darker shade (black in places) due to the sand being based on volcanic rock.
To get around the can take quite some time despite its size as alot of the main roads circumnavigate the island, and to travel in land the roads are often quite steep and twisty due to the terrain. This can lead to some unexpected, spectacular views at times.
The island is mostly covered by a rich rain forrest, and due to the rainfall and fertile soil there is a large variety of plants and fruits that are grown on the island.
We did not book one of the Carnival excursions as the trips were too short and could not be combined to see what we wanted to see due to timings. Instead we booked a "Scenic Tour of Sourfrier" privately. On the day we had the advantage of having the entire minivan to ourselves as no-one else was booked on the tour, so in effect we had a 'private tour' as opposed to be herded round in large groups (of people I often find loud/annoying) as is normally the case on the cruise ship organised tours. Our driver 'Shan' was amazing and given the fact that we were the only people on the tour, also meant that we had individual tours at each of the destinations along with being able to spend more time in places to look around etc. He carried a cool box in the minivan which had complimentary refreshments for the day. While driving round Shan was fully of interesting insights relating to St Lucia and was happy to answer any questions. It all made for a very enjoyable day and to be honest I was sad to leave as I genuinely liked St Lucia as the people are warm and friendly and when walking around, you do not get harrassed by vendors as is normally the case with other Caribbean islands. It was a very relaxing place and definetly one I would return to for a longer stay.
During our time on St Lucia we were able to see:
- The Pitons (from a distance, as climbing them takes some experience)
- Toraille Waterfall (You can swim in the plunge pool - but the water is very cold!)
- Diamond Waterfall and Botanical Garden - Originally a sugar plantation, it has been transformed into a diverse botanical garden with fruits, nuts, flowers and trees from around the world growing here. There are independent tour guides who will take you on a tour of the garders our's (Alexander) was very knowledgeable and an interesting character! We had a lot of fun! There is also a natural spring bath here which is available for a small charge.
St Lucia has a mixture of French and British influences as it was fought for on many occasions in the past before finally becoming a British colony; though now independent since 22nd February 1979, it is still a member of the Commonwealth of Nations associated with the UK.

1. Christopher Columbus did not, in fact, discover this island. While it is true that the island was along the route this world-famous explorer sailed, it is not credited to him. After the true native residents, the Arawak Indians had been defeated by the Hewanorra and Iouanalao Indians, it was not until 1550 that Francois le Clerc made his settlement at Pigeon Island.
2. Castries, the capital city of St Lucia, is actually located in a flood gut region. Interestingly, Castries has been built on a reclaimed land mass.
3. The Pitons Management Area containing much of a collapsed stratovolcano known as the Soufriere Volcanic Centre, became a World Heritage Site. The Pitons – Gros Piton and Petit Piton – are twin volcanic peaks that rise from the sea. These marvelous volcanic monuments have contributed in a big way to making St Lucia very famous.
4. Sulphur Springs Park that is over thousands of years old and is a very historical site to behold, guarantees visions of an active volcano vent that spews mountains of mud.
5. Both France and England continuously struggled to establish sole control over St Lucia throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries. In the bargain, this island nation changed hands 14 separate times. In 1814, St Lucia was surrendered to the United Kingdom, and came under British rule.
6. The Temperature Is Pleasant All Year Round. Thanks to the island’s Caribbean location, it has a pleasingly consistent year-round temperature. The monthly averages in St Lucia only dip below25°C in January and February, and never rise above a perfect 30°C.
7. In St. Lucia, there are three well-known parties that occur every single week of the year (with the exception of Good Friday, if it's a Friday party). There is the Anse La Raye Fish Fry, the Dennery Fish Fry and the Gros Islet "Jump Up". Anse La Raye's event and the Gros Islet Street Party occur on Friday nights and the Dennery Fish Fry is on a Saturday night. These are local parties that literally occur in the streets of their respective fishing villages and involve local vendors coming together to sell their authentic food and drink. The streets are flooded with people, music and dancing, and tourists often join in on the fun. The reason why the Gros Islet Street Party is often the most talked about amongst tourists is due to its location. Gros Islet is located in the North of the island, where most of the hotels are, but Anse La Raye and Dennery are a bit of a drive.

While it is true that the island was along the route this world-famous explorer sailed, it is not credited to him. Castries, the capital city of St Lucia, is actually located in a flood gut region. Interestingly, Castries has been built on a reclaimed land mass. 3. The Pitons Management Area containing much of a collapsed stratovolcano known as the Soufriere Volcanic Centre, became a World Heritage Site. The Pitons – Gros Piton and Petit Piton – are twin volcanic peaks that rise from the sea. These marvelous volcanic monuments have contributed in a big way to making St Lucia very famous. 4. Sulphur Springs Park that is over thousands of years old and is a very historical site to behold, guarantees visions of an active volcano vent that spews mountains of mud. 5. Both France and England continuously struggled to establish sole control over St Lucia throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries. In the bargain, this island nation changed hands 14 separate times. In 1814, St Lucia was surrendered to the United Kingdom, and came under British rule. 6. The Temperature Is Pleasant All Year Round. Thanks to the island’s Caribbean location, it has a pleasingly consistent year-round temperature. The monthly averages in St Lucia only dip below25°C in January and February, and never rise above a perfect 30°C. 7. In St. Lucia, there are three well-known parties that occur every single week of the year (with the exception of Good Friday, if it's a Friday party). There is the Anse La Raye Fish Fry, the Dennery Fish Fry and the Gros Islet "Jump Up". Anse La Raye's event and the Gros Islet Street Party occur on Friday nights and the Dennery Fish Fry is on a Saturday night. These are local parties that literally occur in the streets of their respective fishing villages and involve local vendors coming together to sell their authentic food and drink. The streets are flooded with people, music and dancing, and tourists often join in on the fun. St Lucia was the 5th port of call on the Southern Caribbean cruise aboard Carnival Glory.. The island's beauty has earned it the nickname "Helen of the West Indies" and I would consider this to be one of my favourite islands that we visited on our cruise. The island is quite mountainous, owing to its volcanic features in particular the two peaks that rise from the sea- Gros Piton and Petit Piton (2,619ft and 2,461ft respectively). St Lucia is still geologically active and boasts the world's only 'Drive-in' Volcano at La Soufriere, also known as the Sulphur Springs due to the multitude of thermal springs in the area- some are far to hot to bathe in, however nearby there is a bath house whereby the natural springs are at a more tolerable level, in addition you can also take a hot mud bath....

St Lucia was the 5th port of call on the Southern Caribbean cruise aboard Carnival Glory.. The island's beauty has earned it the nickname "Helen of the West Indies" and I would consider this to be one of my favourite islands that we visited on our cruise.
The island is quite mountainous, owing to its volcanic features in particular the two peaks that rise from the sea- Gros Piton and Petit Piton (2,619ft and 2,461ft respectively).
St Lucia is still geologically active and boasts the world's only 'Drive-in' Volcano at La Soufriere, also known as the Sulphur Springs due to the multitude of thermal springs in the area- some are far to hot to bathe in, however nearby there is a bath house whereby the natural springs are at a more tolerable level, in addition you can also take a hot mud bath.
The beaches are not the usual crisp white sand you see in other Caribbean islands, but has more of a darker shade (black in places) due to the sand being based on volcanic rock.
To get around the can take quite some time despite its size as alot of the main roads circumnavigate the island, and to travel in land the roads are often quite steep and twisty due to the terrain. This can lead to some unexpected, spectacular views at times.
The island is mostly covered by a rich rain forrest, and due to the rainfall and fertile soil there is a large variety of plants and fruits that are grown on the island.
We did not book one of the Carnival excursions as the trips were too short and could not be combined to see what we wanted to see due to timings. Instead we booked a "Scenic Tour of Sourfrier" privately. On the day we had the advantage of having the entire minivan to ourselves as no-one else was booked on the tour, so in effect we had a 'private tour' as opposed to be herded round in large groups (of people I often find loud/annoying) as is normally the case on the cruise ship organised tours. Our driver 'Shan' was amazing and given the fact that we were the only people on the tour, also meant that we had individual tours at each of the destinations along with being able to spend more time in places to look around etc. He carried a cool box in the minivan which had complimentary refreshments for the day. While driving round Shan was fully of interesting insights relating to St Lucia and was happy to answer any questions. It all made for a very enjoyable day and to be honest I was sad to leave as I genuinely liked St Lucia as the people are warm and friendly and when walking around, you do not get harrassed by vendors as is normally the case with other Caribbean islands. It was a very relaxing place and definetly one I would return to for a longer stay.
During our time on St Lucia we were able to see:
- The Pitons (from a distance, as climbing them takes some experience)
- Toraille Waterfall (You can swim in the plunge pool - but the water is very cold!)
- Diamond Waterfall and Botanical Garden - Originally a sugar plantation, it has been transformed into a diverse botanical garden with fruits, nuts, flowers and trees from around the world growing here. There are independent tour guides who will take you on a tour of the garders our's (Alexander) was very knowledgeable and an interesting character! We had a lot of fun! There is also a natural spring bath here which is available for a small charge.
St Lucia has a mixture of French and British influences as it was fought for on many occasions in the past before finally becoming a British colony; though now independent since 22nd February 1979, it is still a member of the Commonwealth of Nations associated with the UK.
Napoleon Bonaparte's first wife, Josephine de Beauharnais was from St Lucia.

1. Christopher Columbus did not, in fact, discover this island. While it is true that the island was along the route this world-famous explorer sailed, it is not credited to him. After the true native residents, the Arawak Indians had been defeated by the Hewanorra and Iouanalao Indians, it was not until 1550 that Francois le Clerc made his settlement at Pigeon Island.
2. Castries, the capital city of St Lucia, is actually located in a flood gut region. Interestingly, Castries has been built on a reclaimed land mass.
3. The Pitons Management Area containing much of a collapsed stratovolcano known as the Soufriere Volcanic Centre, became a World Heritage Site. The Pitons – Gros Piton and Petit Piton – are twin volcanic peaks that rise from the sea. These marvelous volcanic monuments have contributed in a big way to making St Lucia very famous.
4. Sulphur Springs Park that is over thousands of years old and is a very historical site to behold, guarantees visions of an active volcano vent that spews mountains of mud.
5. Both France and England continuously struggled to establish sole control over St Lucia throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries. In the bargain, this island nation changed hands 14 separate times. In 1814, St Lucia was surrendered to the United Kingdom, and came under British rule.
6. The Temperature Is Pleasant All Year Round. Thanks to the island’s Caribbean location, it has a pleasingly consistent year-round temperature. The monthly averages in St Lucia only dip below25°C in January and February, and never rise above a perfect 30°C.
7. In St. Lucia, there are three well-known parties that occur every single week of the year (with the exception of Good Friday, if it's a Friday party). There is the Anse La Raye Fish Fry, the Dennery Fish Fry and the Gros Islet "Jump Up". Anse La Raye's event and the Gros Islet Street Party occur on Friday nights and the Dennery Fish Fry is on a Saturday night. These are local parties that literally occur in the streets of their respective fishing villages and involve local vendors coming together to sell their authentic food and drink. The streets are flooded with people, music and dancing, and tourists often join in on the fun. The reason why the Gros Islet Street Party is often the most talked about amongst tourists is due to its location. Gros Islet is located in the North of the island, where most of the hotels are, but Anse La Raye and Dennery are a bit of a drive.

On the southwest-coast of the caribbean island St. Lucia you`ll find the "Pitons." The two mountainous volcanic plugs are located close to the town Soufrière and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The "Gros Piton" is 771 meter (2,530 ft) high, and the "Petit Piton" is 743 meter (2,438 ft) high. They are linked by the Piton Mitan Ridge. Tennyson S. D. Joseph builds upon current research on the anticolonial and nationalist experience in the Caribbean. He explores the impact of global transformation upon the independent experience of St. Lucia and argues that the island's formal decolonization roughly coincided with the period of the rise of global neoliberalism hegemony. Consequently, the concept of "limited sovereignty" became the defining feature of St. Lucia's understanding of the possibilities of independence. Central to the analysis is the tension between the role of the state as a facilitator of domestic aspirations on one hand and a facilitator of global capital on the other.joseph examines six critical phases in the St. Lucian experience. The first is 1940 to 1970, when the early nationalist movement gradually occupied state power within a framework of limited self-government. The second period is 1970 to 1982 during which formal independence was attained and an attempt at socialist-oriented radical nationalism was pursued by the St. Lucia Labor Party. The third distinctive period was the period of neoliberal hegemony, 1982-1990. The fourth period (1990-1997) witnessed a heightened process of neoliberal adjustment in global trade which destroyed the banana industry and transformed the domestic political economy. A later period (1997-2006) involved the Slp's return to political power, resulting in tensions between an earlier radicalism and a new and contradictory accommodation to global neoliberalism. The final period (2006-2010) coincides with the onset of a crisis in global neoliberalism during which a series of domestic conflicts reflected the contradictions of the dominant understanding of sovereignty in narrow, materialist terms at the expense of its wider antisystematic, progressive, and emancipator connotations.
