The Lesser Antilles (also known as the Caribbees) is the name given to a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. Most form a long, partly volcanic island arc between the Greater Antilles to the north-west and the continent of South America. The islands form the eastern boundary of the Caribbean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. Together, the Lesser Antilles and the Greater Antilles compose the Antilles (or the Caribbean in its narrowest definition). When combined with the Lucayan Archipelago, all three are known as the West Indies.
The islands of the Lesser Antilles are divided into three groups. The two main groups are the Windward Islands in the south and the Leeward Islands in the north. The Windward Islands are so called because they were more windward to sailing ships arriving in the New World than the Leeward Islands, given that the prevailing trade winds blow east to west. The trans-Atlantic currents and winds that provided the fastest route across the ocean brought these ships to the rough dividing line between the Windward and Leeward Islands.

Our first port of call on the Carnival Glory, Southern Caribbean cruise itinerary. Initially I wasn't looking forward to this port as judging by the shore excursions available, there was not really alot on offer, which made me think that it was going to be one of the 'not so good' ports. We were in port for a 12 hours which was quite a long stay, probably because of the next port being on the island of Bonaire which is one of the neighbouring islands in the Lesser Antilles. We decided to not to book any of the ship excursions and just did our own thing in the port since the streetcar into to town is free. It's not really necessary but more a fun novelty that is a result of the Dutch influence on the island. While we were in Oranjestad some of the back streets appeared to be run down at ...

http://bookinghunter.com St. Lucia is a sovereign island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. The most important places to visit in St. Lucia are: St Lucia Volcano (is the only drive-in volcano in the world. There are several pots of boiling water that are above the normal boiling point and many colors at the surface as a result of sulfur, iron, calcium oxide, copper oxide, magnesium, carbon and other mineral deposited there), St. Lucia Beaches (there are several magnificent beaches in St Lucia. All you have to do sometimes is bring along your snorkel gear, play a few games or pull out a beach chair and frolic ...
http://bookinghunter.com Barbados is the easternmost island in the Lesser Antilles. It is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the other West Indies Islands. The most important places to visit in Barbados are: Harrison's Cave (even on the hottest day in Barbados it's cool down below in this popular show cave, which is also a nice rainy-day option), Hunte's Garden (horticulturist Anthony Hunte has transformed a sink-hole in the middle of a rainforest into a lush and beautiful series of gardens that are open for tours that may include an encounter with Hunte himself), George Washington's House (George Washington really did sleep here -- he visited Barbados in his youth along with his brother, Lawrence, during his first foray outside what would later become (thanks to his leadership) the...

This video of the GOES-E infrared satellite imagery from the past few days shows the development of Tropical Storm #Gaston in the central Atlantic. It also shows a tropical wave moving into the Lesser Antilles. The water vapor imagery shows dry air in the W Atlantic which has slowed the development of the systems. The NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center indicates the area of disturbed weather near the Lesser Antilles could develop into a tropical cyclone over the next several days. Second port of call during the Southern Caribbean cruise aboard Carnival Glory; the shop docked in Kralendijk, which was alot quiter than the previous port in Aruba. Bonaire has a different feel to it as the island is much smaller. Consequently the town of Kralendijk did not really have much to offer and seemed to cater more for cruise ships that dock by way of the shops that were available. I think if anyone visits Bonaire, its not for the above surface scenery- its for the underwater variety; even so the islands license plates have "Diver's Paradise" stamped on them. Also most of the excursions available on the ship are under water based. Underwater, Bonaire does not disappoint, while we were in port we took part in a Carnival excursion which was a snorkel trip to the protected reefs ...

This was an air trip to see most of the endemic birds in the Lesser Antilles. We were quite successful and saw much more besides in these beautiful islands. We visited 9 islands and I was most impressed at the differences between them, largely depending on who were their Colonial masters and the decisions made by the islanders when the Colonials departed; 3/2005
