It all began with the so-called Maidan revolution, and a struggle to define Ukraine's identity.
Would the country’s future lie in the West, with more integration with Europe? Or in the East, and even closer ties with Moscow?
The protests eventually forced Ukraine's pro-Russian President, Viktor Yanukovych, out of power. Then a new struggle began, one that would see Ukraine's territorial integrity torn apart.
Fighting broke out between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists. Later, self-declared republics were established in Donetsk and Luhansk.
The conflict has killed around 9,000 people, and has forced an estimated two million from their homes.
Al Jazeera's Charles Stratford returned to Eastern Ukraine, to tell the stories of those left behind -- many of whom feel they've been forgotten by the world.

Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk led Ukraine through turbulent times for the past two years. He survived the loss of Crimea to Russia in 2014, a deepening rift with President Petro Poroshenko, and a no-confidence vote in February.
But now, Yatsenyuk is stepping down.
He says he hopes his departure will help the country refocus on necessary reforms.
Ukraine's internal troubles have further complicated its path towards deeper integration with the EU. But a senior EU source says the bloc would still offer Ukraine visa-free movement this month, despite a Dutch referendum against an EU-Ukraine pact.

Luhansk is the stronghold of Russia's largest and most notorious biker gang, the Night Wolves. Heavily armed and ultra-nationalist, they open up about their hopes for Putin's Russia and the families they left behind.
"The broken Russian plain grows back before the eyes of the entire world", proclaims one of the Night Wolves. "It will rise up like a Eurasian giant, as it is written in destiny". His audience, a group of large men in military uniform and leather, stand in a forest clearing surrounded by the shells of Soviet weaponry and vehicles. But soon the Mad Max-style fortification in east Ukraine will play host to local children, during the bikers' New Years celebrations. "Our objective is to give a patriotic education to the youth", says Denis Kuznetsov, deputy co. of the Night Wolves' Donbas chapter. He joined members of his chapter in leaving their lives and families in Russia to fight for a new border with Ukraine and the dreams of Novorossiya. "We would do anything for the common good, and for our motherland", says Vitaly Kishkinov, surveying the rubble of Donbas. Fiercely loyal to Putin, they say they are motivated by Christianity and patriotism. "His politics are the best possible course for Russia", says Kuznetsov after a day's training at a gun range.

Black Tulip is a Ukrainian organisation that has been working for more than a decade to find and identify bodies of missing soldiers from the First and Second World Wars. Its work is now focused on finding the hundreds of missing Ukrainian servicemen from the current conflict in the east of Ukraine.
With the consent of the authorities in rebel-held territory, the group is able to cross the frontline and travel to sites where it believes soldiers might have gone missing. So far Black Tulip has found and identified 613 bodies of dead soldiers. It says that between 300 and 1,500 are still missing. However Black Tulip says its valuable work, which helps the relatives of the fallen grieve, might have to stop because of a lack of funding. On the far eastern edge of Europe in Donetsk, Ukraine, pro-Russian separatists have taken over, and bombs continue to fall. We visit the people living in this limbo, where almost 8000 have been killed.
"We're here to prevent World War III from happening brother, and that's what we're going to do", explains Tex, one of a motley band of foreigners who have joined Russian-backed rebels in Ukraine. After Ukraine's pro-Russian President fled Kiev and the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Russia, pro-Russian separatists took over Ukrainian government buildings and declared the area the Donetsk People's Republic. A year on and the city is in ruins, the streets are eerily quiet, and shelling continues between the rebels and Ukrainian government forces. "We've been left with nothing, only a pain in our hearts", says Anastasia, whose 17-year-old daughter was killed by a government rocket strike. But amid this bleakness, humanity shines. Nurse Svetlana stayed behind whilst others fled in order to tend to the sick. Olga, a young journalism student, is trying to help rebuild the shattered school in the village of Nikishina. "If we don't do anything now, we can lose this village, and lose its people", she says. Will this land stay part of Ukraine, move towards independence, or be completely swallowed by Russia?

Ukraine (
i/juːˈkreɪn/; Ukrainian: Україна, tr. Ukraina [ukrɑˈjinɑ]) is a country in Eastern Europe,bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the northwest, Poland and Slovakia to the west, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively. It is currently in dispute with Russia over the Crimean peninsula which Russia annexed in 2014 but Ukraine and most of the international community still recognise as Ukrainian. Including Crimea, Ukraine has an area of 603,628 km2 (233,062 sq mi), making it the largest country entirely within Europe and the 46th largest country in the world, and a population of about 44.5 million, making it the 32nd most populous country in the world.
The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation in the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, including Lithuania, Poland, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. A Cossack republic emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but its territory was eventually split between Poland and the Russian Empire, and later submerged fully into Russia. Two brief periods of independence occurred during the 20th century, once near the end of World War I and another during World War II, but both occasions would ultimately see Ukraine's territories conquered and consolidated into a Soviet republic, a situation that persisted until 1991, when Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union in the aftermath of its dissolution at the end of the Cold War.

We visit the people living in this limbo, where almost 8000 have been killed. "We're here to prevent World War III from happening brother, and that's what we're going to do", explains Tex, one of a motley band of foreigners who have joined Russian-backed rebels in Ukraine. After Ukraine's pro-Russian President fled Kiev and the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Russia, pro-Russian separatists took over Ukrainian government buildings and declared the area the Donetsk People's Republic. A year on and the city is in ruins, the streets are eerily quiet, and shelling continues between the rebels and Ukrainian government forces. "We've been left with nothing, only a pain in our hearts", says Anastasia, whose 17-year-old daughter was killed by a government rocket strike. But amid this bleakness, humanity shines. Nurse Svetlana stayed behind whilst others fled in order to tend to the sick. Olga, a young journalism student, is trying to help rebuild the shattered school in the village of Nikishina. "If we don't do anything now, we can lose this village, and lose its people", she says. Will this land stay part of Ukraine, move towards independence, or be completely swallowed by Russia? Body collectors of eastern Ukraine - BBC News
Black Tulip is a Ukrainian organisation that has been working for more than a decade to find and identify bodies of missing soldiers from the First and Second World Wars. Its work is now focused on finding the hundreds of missing Ukrainian servicemen from the current conflict in the east of Ukraine. With the consent of the authorities in rebel-held territory, the group is able to cross the frontline and travel to sites where it believes soldiers might have gone missing. So far Black Tulip has found and identified 613 bodies of dead soldiers. It says that between 300 and 1,500 are still missing. Luhansk is the stronghold of Russia's largest and most notorious biker gang, the Night Wolves. Heavily armed and ultra-nationalist, they open up about their hopes for Putin's Russia and the families they left behind.

Luhansk is the stronghold of Russia's largest and most notorious biker gang, the Night Wolves. Heavily armed and ultra-nationalist, they open up about their hopes for Putin's Russia and the families they left behind.
"The broken Russian plain grows back before the eyes of the entire world", proclaims one of the Night Wolves. "It will rise up like a Eurasian giant, as it is written in destiny". On the far eastern edge of Europe in Donetsk, Ukraine, pro-Russian separatists have taken over, and bombs continue to fall. We visit the people living in this limbo, where almost 8000 have been killed.
"We're here to prevent World War III from happening brother, and that's what we're going to do", explains Tex, one of a motley band of foreigners who have joined Russian-backed rebels in Ukraine. After Ukraine's pro-Russian President fled Kiev and the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Russia, pro-Russian separatists took over Ukrainian government buildings and declared the area the Donetsk People's Republic. A year on and the city is in ruins, the streets are eerily quiet, and shelling continues between the rebels and Ukrainian government forces. "We've been left with nothing, only a pain in our hearts", says Anastasia, whose 17-year-old daughter was killed by a government rocket strike. But amid this bleakness, humanity shines. Nurse Svetlana stayed behind whilst others fled in order to tend to the sick. Olga, a young journalism student, is trying to help rebuild the shattered school in the village of Nikishina. "If we don't do anything now, we can lose this village, and lose its people", she says. Will this land stay part of Ukraine, move towards independence, or be completely swallowed by Russia?

Здесь немало туристов, хотя в целом можно сказать, что в минувшие выходные в Пирогово было очень спокойно. Прогулка удалась и очень понравилась нашим детям.

The Life I Left Behind - Witness
Seventeen years ago, Hasan left his village in Macedonia fleeing with his family to Turkey. After relinquishing his Macedonian passport in exchange for Turkish citizenship, the 54-year-old never looked back. Until now. For years he lived in self-imposed exile even though his family invited him to return to his land and distant loved ones. Finally he relents and decides it is time to go back to his birthplace. He accepts his niece's invitation to return for a two week visit. We follow Hassan as he discovers long forgotten memories of a place where time has stood eerily still, and peace, once threatened, remained intact.
