The Pakistan Armed Forces (Urdu: پاک مُسَلّح افواج, Musallah Afwaj-e-Pakistan) are the military forces of Pakistan. They are the seventh largest in the world in terms of active military personnel. The armed forces comprise three main inter–services branches: Army, Navy, and Air Force together with the number of paramilitary forces and the Strategic Plans Division forces.Chain of command of the military is organized under the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee alongside chiefs of staff of army, navy, and the air force. All of the branches work together during operations and joint missions under the Joint Staff HQ.
Since 1962, the military has had close military relations with China, working jointly to develop the JF-17, the K-8, and other weapons systems. As of 2013 China is the largest foreign supplier of military equipment to Pakistan. Both nations also cooperate on development of nuclear and space technology programs. Their armies have a schedule for organizing joint military exercises. The military also maintains close military relations with the United States, which gave Pakistan major non-NATO ally status in 2004. Pakistan gets the bulk of its military equipment from local domestic suppliers, China, and the United States.

Pakistan (i/ˈpækᵻstæn/ or i/pɑːkiˈstɑːn/; Urdu: پاكستان ALA-LC: Pākistān, pronounced [pɑːkɪst̪ɑːn]), officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (Urdu: اسلامی جمہوریۂ پاكستان ALA-LC: Islāmī Jumhūriyah Pākistān IPA: [ɪslɑːmiː d͡ʒʊmɦuːriəɪh pɑːkɪst̪ɑːn]), is a country in South Asia. It is the sixth-most populous country with a population exceeding 199 million people. It is the 36th largest country in the world in terms of area with an area covering 881,913 km2 (340,509 sq mi). Pakistan has a 1,046-kilometre (650 mi) coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman in the south and is bordered by India to the east, Afghanistan to the west, Iran to the southwest and China in the far northeast respectively. It is separated from Tajikistan by Afghanistan's narrow Wakhan Corridor in the north, and also shares a maritime border with Oman.
The territory that now constitutes Pakistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the Mehrgarh of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age Indus Valley Civilisation, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including Hindus, Indo-Greeks, Muslims, Turco-Mongols, Afghans and Sikhs. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Indian Mauryan Empire, the Persian Achaemenid Empire, Alexander of Macedonia, the Arab Umayyad Caliphate, the Mongol Empire, the Mughal Empire, the Durrani Empire, the Sikh Empire and the British Empire. As a result of the Pakistan Movement led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the subcontinent's struggle for independence, Pakistan was created in 1947 as an independent nation for Muslims from the regions in the east and west of the Subcontinent where there was a Muslim majority. Initially a dominion, Pakistan adopted a new constitution in 1956, becoming an Islamic republic. A civil war in 1971 resulted in the secession of East Pakistan as the new country of Bangladesh.

If India and Pakistan Went to War - World Military Strength Comparison In straight numerical terms of population, economic might, military manpower and equipment it is almost meaningless to speak about an India-Pakistan balance. "Imbalance" would be a more appropriate term since India dominates in every respect. What has to be understood from the outset is that the two countries have very different military aspirations. Indian Agni II missile India is eager to project its power in the region India sees itself as a rising regional actor, and it sees military power as one element in this process. As any aspiring regional player must do, it looks around for potential partners and potential enemies. China too has growing regional ambitions. The two countries need not be enemies, but c...

July 26, 2005 - Husain Haqqani talked about his book Pakistan: Between Mosque and Military, published by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The relationship between Pakistan’s military and Islamic groups in the country is one that complicates the relationship between the United States and Pakistan. The author examined how Pakistan has been torn between being an Islamic state and hub for radical Islamic activity while also sharing intelligence with the U.S. intelligence community in the global efforts to combat terrorism. The author contended that part of this struggle with identity stems from the long-standing close ties between the Pakistani military and Islamic groups. Ambassador Haqqani discussed these issues with Ambassador Oakley and Steve Coll. Following their presentation, ...

September 18, 2007 - Ayesha Siddiqa talked about her book Military Inc.: Inside Pakistan’s Military Economy, published by Pluto Press. Her book details the “internal economy” of Pakistan’s military. The military holds private assets and business interests in Pakistan ranging from construction firms to breakfast cereal that comprise a major segment of the economy. She emphasized that this situation is not unique to Pakistan. Ms. Siddiqa responded to questions from members of the audience.
February 1, 2008 A talk by Ayesha Siddiqa, Islamabad-based independent political and defence analyst and author. Pakistan has emerged as a strategic ally of the US in the 'war on terror'. It is the third largest receiver of US aid in the world, but it also serves as a breeding ground for fundamentalist groups. How long can the relationship between the US and Pakistan continue? This book shows how Pakistan is an unusual ally for the US in that it is a military state, controlled by its army. The Pakistan military not only defines policy - it is entrenched in the corporate sector and controls the country's largest companies. So Pakistan's economic base, its companies and its main assets, are in the hands of a tiny minority of senior army officials. This merging of the military and corporate...
