Pomeranian Voivodeship (1919–39)

The Pomeranian Voivodeship or Pomorskie Voivodeship (Polish: Województwo Pomorskie) was an administrative unit of inter-war Poland (from 1919–1939). It ceased to exist in September 1939, following the German and Soviet invasion of Poland.

Most of its territory became part of current Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, which has the same capital (Toruń) of the interwar voivodeship.

The name Pomerania comes from Slavic po more, which means Land at the Sea.

History

This was a unit of administration and local government in the Republic of Poland (II Rzeczpospolita) established in 1919 after World War I from the majority of the Prussian province of West Prussia(made out of territories taken in Partitions of Poland which was returned to Poland. Toruń was the capital. In 1938–1939, the voivodeship extended to the south at the expense of Poznań Voivodeship and Warsaw Voivodeship, and was called Great Pomerania afterwards (see: Territorial changes of Polish Voivodeships on April 1, 1938).

Pomeranian Voivodeship

Pomeranian Voivodeship, Pomorskie Region, or Pomerania Province (in Polish województwo pomorskie [vɔjɛˈvut͡stfɔ pɔˈmɔrskʲɛ], in Kashubian Pòmòrsczé wòjewództwò), is a voivodeship, or province, in north-central Poland. It comprises most of Pomerelia (the easternmost part of historical Pomerania), as well as an area east of the Vistula River. The western part of the province, around Słupsk, belonged historically to Farther Pomerania, while Pomerelia and the eastern bank of the Vistula belonged to the historical region of Prussia. The central parts of the province are also known as Kashubia, named after the Kashubian minority. The provincial capital is Gdańsk.

The voivodeship was established on January 1, 1999, out of the former voivodeships of Gdańsk, Elbląg and Słupsk, pursuant to the Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998. It is bordered by West Pomeranian Voivodeship to the west, Greater Poland and Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeships to the south, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship to the east, and the Baltic Sea to the north. It also shares a short land border with Russia, on the Vistula Spit.

Czarna Dąbrówka

Czarna Dąbrówka [ˈt͡ʂarna dɔmˈbrufka] (German: Schwarz Damerkow; Kashubian: Czôrnô Dąbrówka) is a village in Bytów County, Pomeranian Voivodeship, in northern Poland. Until 1945 it was part of Farther Pomerania in Prussia. It is now the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Czarna Dąbrówka. It lies approximately 25 kilometres (16 mi) north of Bytów and 71 km (44 mi) west of the regional capital Gdańsk. The village has a population of 1,112.

History

The settlement was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1346 as Damerkow. It was first inhabited by Kashubian people. From 1457 Damerkow and the nearby village of Kleschinz (Kleszczyniec) were owned by Martin von Puttkamer, and from 1517 by the noble family of Zitzewitz. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was a possession at different times of the noble families of Lettow, Wobesen, and Stojentin

According to a history by Brüggemann, in 1784 the village had one farm, six tenants, five cottagers and fifteen households. At this time there were two separate properties, Damerkow "A", consisting of a farm, with two tenants and four cottagers, which was in the possession of Captain J. W. von Puttkamer, and Damerkow "B", with four tenants and one cottager, known as Niemietzke (now Podkomorzyce), in the ownership of Johann Christian Ernst von Puttkamer. The Polish name is based on the German name Puttkamerhof, which refers to the Puttkamer family.
