Donald "Don" McLean III (born October 2, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter best known for the 1971 album American Pie, containing the songs "American Pie" and "Vincent".
McLean's grandfather and father were also named Donald McLean. The Buccis, the family of McLean's mother, Elizabeth, came from Abruzzo in central Italy. They left Italy and settled in Port Chester, New York, at the end of the 19th century. He has other extended family in Los Angeles and Boston.
Though some of his early musical influences included Frank Sinatra and Buddy Holly, as a teenager, McLean became interested in folk music, particularly the Weavers' 1955 recording At Carnegie Hall. Childhood asthma meant that McLean missed long periods of school, particularly music lessons, and although he slipped back in his studies, his love of music was allowed to flourish. He often performed shows for family and friends. By age 16 he had bought his first guitar (a Harmony acoustic archtop with a sunburst finish) and began making contacts in the music business, becoming friends with folk singer Erik Darling and Fred Hellerman, both members of the Weavers. Hellerman said, "He called me one day and said, 'I'd like to come and visit you', and that's what he did! We became good friends - he has the most remarkable music memory of anyone I've ever known." McLean recorded his first studio sessions (with singer Lisa Kindred) while still in prep school.
The Starry Night is an oil on canvas by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June, 1889, it depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941, acquired through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest. It is regarded as among Van Gogh's finest works, and is one of the most recognized paintings in the history of Western culture.
In the aftermath of the 23 December 1888 breakdown that resulted in the self-mutilation of his left ear, Van Gogh voluntarily admitted himself to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole lunatic asylum on 8 May 1889. Housed in a former monastery, Saint-Paul-de-Mausole catered to the wealthy and was less than half full when Van Gogh arrived, allowing him to occupy not only a second-story bedroom but also a ground-floor room for use as a painting studio.
Vincent is a male name derived from Vincentius (from the present participle of the Latin verb vincere, "to conquer or win").

This folk song by "Don Mclean" was released in 1971 and was on his album "American Pie" i probably don't need to mention it but i will anyway, but this song is about the famous artist "Vincent van Gogh" who sadly took his own life way back in 1890 after suffering many years of painful anxiety and frequent bouts of mental illness. Its quite often the way that a famous artist only become famous after their death...

American songwriter legend Don McLean giving a concert at the Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Finland on his 40th anniversary tour. This, along with Empty Chairs, Tapestry, And I love you so, and American Pie, was among the highlights. Castles in the air, the Grave, Dreidel, and Crossroads are other favorites of mine, which sadly weren't heard that night. As far as I know this was his first concert in Finland. About time, too :). The voice is still there, though understandably the higher register is avoided more often than not. Shot with a Sony HX 20V from the first row. The audio is 20% Sony and 80% iPhone4. The long American Pie album version was live in concert at the La Mirada Theater for the Performing Arts, La Mirada, CA on March 5, 2016. Wikipedia: In February 2015, McLean announced he would reveal the meaning of the lyrics to the song when the original manuscript goes for auction in New York City in April 2015. The lyrics and notes were auctioned on April 7, and sold for $1.2m. In the sale catalog notes McLean revealed the meaning in the song's lyrics "Basically in American Pie things are heading in the wrong direction. ... It [life] is becoming less idyllic. Also exploring other Don M albums has unearthed other gems such as 'Castles In the Air', 'You're My Little Darling' and 'Angry Words'.

Here is an early recording of Don McLean singing "American Pie" unearthed from the archives of WMUC radio, a student run station at the University of Maryland. The station believes the recording originates from spring 1971, well before the song was released for sale as a single. There are some differences between this WMUC recording and the lyrics and music as we know them from the record. Don McLean has listened to the recording but doesn't recall anything about it except to say that, in general, he did "play with the lyrics, just for fun sometimes." -uploaded in HD at http://www.TunesToTube.com

In 1980 Don McLean had a huge hit in the Netherlands with his version of the Roy Orbison classic 'Crying'. He came to Holland to perform it live in a tv-show. I had the opportunity of interviewing him before the rehearsals in a concerthall in Zaandam. It was recorded with a cassette recorder, so the sound quality is not very good. However, Don talks about things that happen in his life, his succes, his fears, his private life - he had just met a girl in Israel he fell in love with.

A seemingly random decision, to take the Greyhound from B.C. to Winnipeg rather than a friend’s offer of a plane ticket, would cost 22-year-old Tim McLean his life and profoundly change the lives of those who witnessed his murder. On Greyhound 1170, Vincent Li, a diagnosed schizophrenic on his own randomly chosen bus journey, sat beside McLean and then, obeying voices inside his head, repeatedly stabbed and then cannibalized McLean’s body. The Fifth Estate recounts the story from the perspective of two of the surviving passengers, a truck driver who stopped to help, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Stanley Yaren, and Tim McLean's family. His father, stepmother and mother struggle to understand why the RCMP stood outside Bus 1170 for five hours, as Li cut up their son’s body, before intervening. ...

I don't know of another copy of this show and this show to my knowledge was only circulated in the last few years. Don too was somewhere between poised and nervous. He screwed up Arkansas Traveler due to nerves or lack of preparation. It's gotta be hard to play a difficult song, play the banjo and sing for a live audience and a radio audience. I don't know if the show went out live or if it was taped and aired later. Don spoke of the heavy fine that a performer would face if they cursed on the air so the show may have even been live which would have been all the more reason to have a case of the nerves. From watching and listening to Don live I'd ...
Long lost documentary which I found back some days ago. I made this in 2000 and due to an argument with the production company it never made (reached) any festivals. It is about Van Gogh's time he spend in Belgium desperately longing to step in his father's footsteps to become a vicar, knowing he was born to be an artist. The film was shown on Spanish, Italian, Maltese and Cypriotic television but has never been viewed in Belgium. Director: klaus verscheure. Writer: Rene de Bok Editor: Jan Weynants Music: Frank Deruytter & Tony O'Malley
