Writing at this speed for me is pushing my abilities, and you can see later in the dictation it takes its toll and I make several errors.

Pitman Shorthand was actually used to represent the written language of the Vogons, the bureaucratic and ugly aliens in the movie version of the science-fiction comedy books, THE HITCH-HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY (2005). Those fortunate enough to know Pitman will recognize phrases in the movie like "Presidential Release Form", "Demolition Order", "Information Deleted" and a Vogon poster saying "Depressed? Try Destruction Therapy!"

Shorthand
Shorthand is an abbreviated symbolic writing method that increases speed and brevity of writing as compared to a normal method of writing a language. The process of writing in shorthand is called stenography, from the Greek stenos (narrow) and graphē or graphie (writing). It has also been called brachygraphy, from Greek brachys (short) and tachygraphy, from Greek tachys (swift, speedy), depending on whether compression or speed of writing is the goal.
Many forms of shorthand exist. A typical shorthand system provides symbols or abbreviations for words and common phrases, which can allow someone well-trained in the system to write as quickly as people speak. Abbreviation methods are alphabet-based and use different abbreviating approaches. Several autocomplete programs, standalone or integrated in text editors, based on word lists, also include a shorthand function for frequently-used phrases. Many journalists use shorthand writing to quickly take notes at press conferences or other similar scenarios.

This is a short (2 minute) dictation of the introductory paragraph of the shorthand website "gregg.angelfishy.net". It talks a little bit about the history of the Gregg writing system-- the one that I am using in this dictation.
Writing at this speed for me is pushing my abilities, and you can see later in the dictation it takes its toll and I make several errors.

I made an unpolished little video to illustrate some basics of Pitman shorthand, a system of rapid writing which can even be done at the speed of speech with practice. At the time, I couldn't find anything else on YouTube, but here are two new videos by others:

Those fortunate enough to know Pitman will recognize phrases in the movie like "Presidential Release Form", "Demolition Order", "Information Deleted" and a Vogon poster saying "Depressed? Try Destruction Therapy!"
