Glassing victim in coma

A man is in an induced coma and is expected to lose an eye after a glass was thrown at his head in Woolloongabba early this morning.

The 26-year-old victim was on the upstairs dance floor of the Chalk Hotel on Stanley Street when the incident occured.

He suffered severe injuries to his eye and face and was given first aid by night club security until ambulance officers arrived.

The assault is the latest in a string of violent assaults at Brisbane nightspots which have spurred the Queensland Police Union to this week call for trading hours in Brisbane's CBD and Fortitude Valley to be brought back to 2am - a proposal backed by Lord Mayor Campbell Newman.

The violence has also inspired a Queensland Government plan to force venues with repeated glassing attacks to serve drinks in tempered glass or plastic vessels.

The Chalk Hotel is on the government's list of 41 venues facing the glass ban.

Chalk general manager Jason Titman has slammed the approach in recent weeks, arguing Premier Anna Bligh is on a personal campaign against alcohol because her father battled with booze.

Today he said hotel staff were conducting an internal investigation into last night's assault and were assisting police.

``Police have the details of all those involved,'' Mr Titman said.

``It's still unclear if glass was used in the incident although it makes no difference if glass was or was not used, we don't condone violence and hope the offender is punished to the full extent of the law.''

Police will speak with witnesses today and would like anyone with information about the assault to come forward.
