A minstrel was a medieval European singer who performed songs whose lyrics told stories of distant places or of existing or imaginary historical events. Although minstrels created their own tales, often they would memorize and embellish the works of others. Frequently they were retained by royalty and high society. As the courts became more sophisticated, minstrels were eventually replaced at court by the troubadours, and many became wandering minstrels, performing in the streets; a decline in their popularity began in the late 15th century. Minstrelsy fed into later traditions of travelling entertainers, which continued to be moderately strong into the early 20th century, and which has some continuity in the form of today's buskers or street musicians.
Initially, minstrels were simply servants at court, and entertained the lord and courtiers with chansons de geste or their local equivalent. The term minstrel derives from Old French ménestrel (also menesterel, menestral), which is a derivative from Italian ministrello (later menestrello), from Middle Latin ministralis "retainer," an adjective form of Latin minister, "attendant" from minus, "lesser".

Slim Williams delivers a stump speech in blackface. This was an important part of nearly every minstrel show -- a performer delivers a political speech filled with puns and malaprops. The speaker's demeanor is reminiscent of the pomposity of Zip Coon; he aspires to great dignity, wisdom and intelligence, but his hilarious mangling of language always makes him appear foolish and ignorant. (activate the subtitles to see the lyrics) AHAHAHAH- excuse me while I die. Woah ! So if anyone here doesn't know Mirai Nikki (the anime), this song by Minstrel is a parody of the famous OP "Kuusou Mesorogiwi", and the way it merges with Heian Alien is fantastic. Even the title is parodying this OP ! "Mesorogiwi" is a typo of "Mesorogi" (Messolonghi). Here, the title of the song is Heian "Ewirian", a typo of "Eirian" (Alien)... I am so pleased to be able to share this extremely obscure and obviously banned film "Minstrel Man". One of the most influential black music films ever made. I do not own any copyrights to it and am making it public for entertainment purposes only. This movie post is missing a few words at the beginning with Glynn Turnan's opening narration. He starts by saying "The first minstrels in this country were the slaves..." The overall sound and visual quality for this film post isn't the best. It was transfered to DVD from my VHS copy. New York Times Overvue: ...Minstrel Man is a made-for-TV chronicle of two African-American entertainers, played by Glynn E. Turman and Stanley Clay. Confined to racist show-biz tradition of the early 20th century, dancer Turman is permitted to perform only i...
