Tanning
Tanning is the process of treating skins and hides of animals to produce leather, which is more durable and less susceptible to decomposition. Traditionally, tanning used tannin, an acidic chemical compound from which the tanning process draws its name (tannin is in turn named after an old German word for oak or fir trees, from which the compound was derived). Coloring may occur during tanning. A tannery is the term for a place where the skins are processed.
Tanning hide into leather involves a process which permanently alters the protein structure of skin. Making "rawhide" (untanned but worked hide) does not require the use of tannin. Rawhide is made by removing the flesh and fat and then the hair by use of an aqueous solution (this process is often called "liming" when using lime and water or "bucking" when using wood ash (lye) and water), then scraping over a beam with a somewhat dull knife, then drying. The two aforementioned solutions for removing the hair also act to clean the fiber network of the skin and allow penetration and action of the tanning agent, so that all the steps in preparation of rawhide except drying are often preludes to the more complex process of tanning and production of leather.

The Paley Center was pleased to host a panel about the VH1 documentary, The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop, which explores how hip-hop has impacted every aspect of American life. The four-part documentary is based on the book by internationally acclaimed marketing maven Steve Stoute, who shows how hip-hop grew from an urban counter-culture movement to a major force in music, film, television, fashion, advertising, and politics. Today's video is a soft spoken "how to" on SELF TANNING. I recently just got a tan membership so I'm currently detoxing and exfoliating the old tan off. The fake stuff!
This video is two parts. The second half will be me actually showing you how to CORRECTLY apply self tanner. This video is more for those on a BUDGET.
In part one I:
- Show you drug store tanners that WORK and do NOT work
- Show you tools in regards to prevent streak free application, DIY at home tools as well
- Show you makeup products and types of foundation to make sure you never have to worry about matching your foundation
- Explain why most self tanners never remove evenly... and a lot MORE
... Like I said, this video is more for those on a budget. Tomorrows part 2 is directed for anyone with any type of self tanner, seeing as it's just a tutorial on how to apply correctly.
