Guide to how to lock the mode dial of your DSLR
Not long ago, Canon US made an announcement to offer a post-sales modification service for all owners of the 5D Mark II or 7D to change their mode dial to a locking one, just like the one seen on the recent 60D. This would set you back $110 US. We set Kai & Lok a challenge to come up with a cheaper alternative in this video.

Experiment with the full auto camera mode and basic zone modes on your mode dial camera, great if your just getting started using your EOS Camera. Some of the basic zone modes include portrait mode; which puts the background way out of focus, landscape mode; which puts more of the scene in sharp focus and sports mode; which helps freeze the motion your trying to capture. Windows 7 Netbook on 56k Dial-Up!
Windows 7 Netbook on 56k Dial-Up!
Yes, you can still do old-school dial-up Internet on a cheap modern Windows 7 netbook. Just add a cheap USB dial-up modem compatible with the netbook's operating system. I used this technique to get (slow) Internet access in a remote village in the country with only a standard BT line and no available ADSL or wireless contract/modem. Netbook: Acer Aspire One A110 upgraded to 1.5GB RAM + 2 x 16GB SDHC cards. Controller: Technika wired USB optical mouse (not required, used during recording) OS: Windows 7 32-bit with vLite Browser: Google Chrome (Incognito mode) Dial-Up Modem: Conexant USB 2.0 56k Voice Fax Modem Dial-up ISP: Nippy Internet - www.nippyinternet.co.uk As I have a phone line with Virgin instead of BT, calls are 7p/minute from my line, and 1p/minute from a BT line after 6pm. Here you can see how slow the Google logo loads on dial-up. Google is perfectly usable, however, as is Bing, Wikipedia, email, Facebook, Twitter, as well as Windows Live Messenger. Mobile Web versions may be faster, such as m.twitter.com and http , however may have less functionality - try using them alongside the standard versions. For faster email on much slower connections: Hotmail: m.mail.live.com , Yahoo: m.yahoo.com , Google: m.gmail.com ... Dial-up is adequate for text-based content and small amounts of graphics, albeit slower than broadband, however is not fast enough for rich media such as streaming video or music (eg YouTube), or advanced Google Maps features. Nikon 1 J1 [Review][HD]
Nikon 1 J1 [Review][HD]
Hardware The J1 is cute. Like, fluffy white kitten cute. It brightens your day just by hanging around and being fun to play with, but you probably won't be impressed when it comes time to capture some serious photos (like trying to get that tiny kitty to snatch up a family of mice). The rounded edges, well-disguised components and overall clean finish make it clear that Nikon designers put a lot of care into this camera's physical appearance. It's just as much a fashion accessory as it is a relatively capable imaging device, and, depending on which color you choose, it's likely to make quite a statement. There's no flip-up LCD, as there is on Sony's NEX series, so you'll be spending a lot of time holding the camera at eye level. Fortunately, the 460k-dot, three-inch LCD has a decent viewing angle, which will come in handy if shooting from below or above is an absolute must. The display occupies most of the two-tone plastic J1's rear, and is complemented by a healthy selection of dedicated controls. A mode dial lets you switch between Motion Snapshot, Smart Photo Selector, movie and still image modes (the latter of which enables exposure mode selections like the default Scene Auto Selector, programmed auto, shutter- and aperture-priority, along with the ever-so-critical manual). You'll find a playback zoom rocker above the main dial, which also doubles as the shutter speed control in manual mode. To the left is a function button, which serves a variety of purposes <b>...</b>

Canon Professional Network - Inside the Canon EOS 60D
The 18 Megapixel Canon EOS 60D is a highly specified APS-C format camera that is the first EOS DSLR to feature a flip-out LCD screen and offers some impressive in-camera features (including RAW processing), Full HD movie shooting and a range of re-designed controls to make it easy and intuitive to operate. The camera's groundbreaking 3-inch, 1104000-dot Vari-angle Clear View LCD monitor provides great viewing options for both Live View and EOS Movie shooting, even at awkward angles or in very bright light. The EOS 60D offers full HD movie shooting with full manual control over the exposure and user selectable frame rates including 24, 25 and 30fps at 1920x1080p, and 50 or 60fps at 1280x720p. Audio recording levels can be left in Auto or manually set to provide more control over the final results. The ergonomic controls of the EOS 60D include a Mode Dial lock to avoid accidentally knocking the selected mode out and the buttons on the top LCD panel have been modified so there is only one button per function - for AF, Drive, ISO and Metering. At the centre of the Quick Control Dial on the rear of the camera a rocker switch functions in the same way as the Multi-Controller on other EOS DSLR cameras to help speedy operation of settings.

Nikon Coolpix P510 hands-on
Nikon Coolpix P510 hands-on
In the hand, the Coolpix P510 feels like an SLR, if slightly lighter -- thought the lack of a battery is likely a part of this. You'll need both hands to use the device, but the legion of controls will make adjusting most settings a breeze, especially if you've dabbled with its bigger (and pricier) brothers. The tiltable screen adds some extra bulk at the back, although only works vertically. Nikon told us that adding horizontal functionality would compound the bulk issue. SLR dials are located in the typical Nikon place, while finishing on the mode dial and slick hinged screen projected a premium feel in our hands; the textured grip also felt like it would help us keep our fingers on the camera. It's a shame that we were unable to see how it handled the 42x zoom; it's also left us fascinated by how the 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor will handle it. With that level of zoom, the toggle on the side of the lens also seems well thought-out, but we'll have to see how it all comes together in the field.
